VA VA - Kathleen Haley, 37, Newport News, 1 Sept 2012

  • #201
I find him irritating but Andy Fox on Channel 10 (WAVY) sometimes does stories like this. He just did one where a young girl with Down's Syndrome lived with a couple for a while and thrived. Her mother, who still has custody, had her sent back to a group home. He just did a follow up recently on that story.

There are quite a few bars that have dancers in Portsmouth. There's the Norfolk Naval Shipyard in downtown so most likely cater to service men. I had originally wondered if the man in the sketch might be in the military and possible out to sea right now. I know some of the Navy men live in Newport News (there's another shipyard there). Course we have all types of the military here. Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, some Marines and then I don't think Army is too far away.

There's Final Frontier on George Washington Highway
Lappers
Majik City (I don't think she would work at this one since all the clientele and dancers are African American (I pass this one when getting on the interstate
Headlights/JB's
Hot Seat
Maddogs

Portsmouth is a small city so you can see that there are quite a few and all seem to be in the same area except Majik City.

I sure wish they would put out a little more info about where she worked.I worked in some bars in that area and used to have contacts in the places you mentioned. ( Two bars I used to work at where across the street from Magic City.)
I wonder if the lack of info is because the police are pretty sure they know what happened and who is responsible bu they don't want to alert the suspect until they get the evidence together.

I'm pretty sure that by now, the police know were Kathleen worked. Like you said, the lack of info may be strategic - the police may be playing a waiting game to either gather more evidence, or wait for the suspect to make a mistake. Or maybe if they wait long enough, someone will gather the courage and talk to the police.

ETA - actually, the article posted yesterday by Knox states that the police DO know where she worked. I hope that info will help them.

Thanks for your very informative post. The article posted by Knox yesterday says the police know where Kathleen worked, but they didn't name her employer.

I will contact Andy Fox, it sounds like he might find this story worth covering. I'll e-mail him today, and follow up with a phone call if I don't get a response.

I am so happy that my fellow WSers are still following this case. There aren't many of us on this thread but we've been loyal and full of good ideas.

And I'm sure Kathleen knows, somehow, that she hasn't been forgotten.

"The longer the time goes by, the chances of locating her decrease," said Master Detective W. B. Gordon. He and other detectives with Newport News Police Department received several tips through Crime Line, but none have panned out once checked. Gordon continues to look into other tips.

"We've got the stuff we sent to the lab, and we're waiting for results from that to return," Gordon offered. "Once that returns, hopefully, that'll open up some things."

Gordon said the department has been able to find out where Haley was working. When her family reported her missing, they knew only that she was working in Portsmouth.

"Obviously, the environment she worked at, dancing, there's some hesitation on those people that work in that environment in wanting to talk to the police, but I would greatly appreciate if any of them would reach out and contact us," Gordon said.

I meant to thank you yesterday for this post - I was happy to see the newspaper article. Even though there wasn't much new info, it's good to see Kathleen hasn't been forgotten.

Who have you contacted? Most of the media in that area is based out of Norfolk/Virginia Beach.

I contacted a couple of journalists who had previously covered Kathleen's disappearance. I said they were from Newport News, but it's quite possible they are based out of Norfolk/Virginia Beach. I know they cover local stories in Newport News. I also contacted WVEC and WAVY.

I'll check my notes and, if I missed a major news source, I'll contact them as well. And I will contact Andy Fox of WAVY at the suggestion of lizzybeth.

I don't know if the article posted by Knox yesterday was in response to my e-mail requesting a follow-up story, but however it came about, I'm so happy Kathleen (and Molly) are in the news again.

Thank you both for contacting the media. The local television stations cover all of Hampton Roads (Norfolk, Portsmouth, Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Hampton, Newport News) and even some parts of North Carolina. The Virginia-Pilot covers all those areas except North Carolina and Hampton/Newport News. Isn't that paper called The Press or something? I can't remember.

Rob525, I know exactly the places you're talking about. I can't remember their names but I remember exactly where they are. I think one caught on fire a few years ago.

Someone refresh my memory please. The sketch of the man, is that someone that the neighbors saw often or just that one time? I was wondering if possibly one of the patrons followed her home and harmed her. Spent the next day cleaning up and getting rid of evidence. He could have shipped out that week and possibly STILL be out.

I listed the names of the bars for our benefit. I was pretty sure that the police knew where she worked and probably from day one.

The big bar directly across from the thrift store used to be called Tailgates amonst other names. And the one that caught fire was called P-town pub when I worked there. The name changed due to change in ownership and was called Big Daddys, I think. I heard there was a fire and don't know if it is still open.

The guy I thought resembled the sketch I knew from that area which would fit with her working in Portsmouth. He is from Chesapeake.

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) - Police have released a composite sketch of a man believed to have information about a missing Newport News woman.

-Snip-

The man in the composite sketch was seen in the area of Haley's apartment in the 2800 block of West Avenue Sept. 4, according to McPherson.

http://www.wavy.com/dpp/news/local_news/newport_news/sketch-released-in-missing-woman-case

ETA: Could this composite sketch be of the man seen going into/coming out of Kathleen's apartment? The man was "seen in the area of" Kathleen's apartment, but I don't know if that means seen in the general area of her apartment building, or seen near Kathleen's actual apartment.

The idea about this possibly being someone in the military is interesting, IMO. The composite sketch shows a short haircut, could be military.

I don't think they're there anymore. I think the bldgs. are but the bars are gone. I'll have to pay more attention next time I'm by there.

Thanks to all of you for working to keep Kathleen's case out there!

Bumping for Kathleen.

  • #213
Another bump. Christmas is fast approaching. Where are Kathleen and her pup?

  • #214
I've contacted the CUE Center for Missing Persons to see if they can offer suggestions for getting more attention for Kathleen's case. I know they are a wonderful organization and if anyone can help us, it would be CUE.

I may not have as much time to devote to Kathleen for a few days, but if I hear from CUE I'll be sure to post the info.

In the meantime, if anyone wants to make sure Kathleen gets bumped up now and again, please do so.

This thread doesn't have many followers, but I know there are a few of us who are dedicated to getting justice for Kathleen.:please:

Where are you Kathleen?

Bumping for Kathleen and Molly.

  • #218
Kathleen is in my thoughts - bumping for her once again.

  • #219
I've looked at recent articles mentioning "human remains" or "skeletal remains" to see if anything could be related to Kathleen. So far, I haven't run across anything I feel could possibly be her.

So that's both good news and bad news, I suppose.

Kathleen could not have vanished - she has to be somewhere.
