ok walker how does MH and Katie even fall in the same category?
I am so glad that you have heard of Kate Puzie. Just seems so tragic that a young woman gets killed & the whole story is just swept under the rug. I mainly meant that their personalities & their families seem similar, not that their fates were the exact same.
there are plenty of murdered people in the wrong place at the wrong time??
My post mentions "wrong place/wrong people." The time didn't make any difference in Puzie's case, JMO.
Why the link to this one besides them going to the same college?
The colleges weren't the same: MH went to VTech, and KP went to W&M; but they are similar institutions.
BTW: Virginia has some type of problem going on with college students. To be fair, maybe college students are getting killed in RI or MI just as frequently, but we don't hear about these cases; but lately we seem to hear of young people in Virginia or with close ties to VA being killed way too often.
MH wasnt in a third world country or working for the Peace Corps.
Mom was into Zambia (= dangerous), and her church was all over the third-world. Yes, I do believe that they are mostly well-intentioned; but they underestimate the depth of the problem.
MH was to me a normal, 19 yr old out to a concert and to have a good time.
She left both friends & concert.
Religion hasnt really been discussed regarding her or her parents and frankly I dont get it.
We have many threads. The church came up in the context of its doctrine that all people are basically good & we create our own experiences. Is its attitude too naive? Did the church's doctrines influence MH?

Having a "citizen of the world" attitude is a positive thing for some people.
All I know is that the villagers had a problem with it.
I have that attitude. If Kate died doing something she had a passion for then yeah she knew the risks.
Perhaps, but she died awfully young.
All Peace Corp members know the risks.
At the time, a spate of articles came out quoting former Peace Corps members complaining that the organization is poorly managed, and puts people alone in dangerous situations without proper guidance or training.
The same applies for anyone that goes overseas. People travel abroad all the time. So if someone gets murdered are they suppose to not travel? Not expand their knowledge of the world we live in?
Europe used to be actually much safer than the US. Not true anymore. Be careful no matter where you go; even Austria & France have terrible problems now.
The key is being careful and safe. Church Missionaries go overseas and have been persecuted and killed for years. Does that stop them from going. No. They have their faith to guide them. I'm agnostic and totally respect that.
The reason that they get killed is that although they are often naive & innocent religious type people, they are misperceived as acting as agents of colonialist powers; for example, the individual nun or priest only wants to teach school; opposing nationalist political forces see their efforts as mere indoctrination.
MH wasnt some kind or hipster on a mission either IMO.
Photos of both young women suggested "hipster." Here is a blog by a man who traveled in Africa. These types always have a certain look. Can't find the right word: just as if they should be ordering fancy expresso in NYC or Boston.

Why would you characterize her as that? She wasnt on a mission to save anything nor was she the hippy type.
The Hook had a picture of a trunk in her room with all these weird causes on it. She was a bit of a "hippy."
To me it sounds almost disrepectful and belittling the way you describe MH.
No, they were both good girls; just misguided.
Like what she did hastened her death.
Her whole social environment did not protect her enough. Girls do need protection.
Just a girl wanting to go to a Metallica concert like thousands of others who go to concerts throughout the year.
She wasn't really a metal chick, though. She & Kate were hipsters, but I don't mean that in a negative sense.
Long blonde hair, um ok so what? What does that have to do with anything? Tons of chicks with long blonde hair. Dont get where you're going with that.
Yes, but JMO dreadlocking blond hair is not attractive. It's like they couldn't see who they were.
Someone killed her and this person isnt part of some organization or tribe. That seems a bit far fetched. If more than one person did this then so be it, but I find MH more akin to many other cases of missing women around the same area in the past 10 years or so. Regardless of her religion, or what she wore or whatever she didnt deserve to die like that by anyone. No one does. Whether you're trying to save the rainforrest or party at a concert. No one should have to meet their fate like that.
True. They didn't deserve their fates.
