Not unless there was some irony to it. If so - then yes. Blonde haired, blue eyed girl missionary walking around some neighborhood prosteletizing people for the Christian faith - yes, same humor in that. Same sadness, same humor. The title didn't really even specify - "Missionaries Shot in Virginia" was what I was responding to.

I said it was dark humor, and I do wonder who this mythical poster is who is claiming these boys deserved to be shot, or who is denigrating the mormon church - I haven't seen that poster on this thread yet!
Sorry but we posted at the same time there...lol.I think I understand what you're saying and you did it in the 1000 words or less also....LOL I love those who follow rules to a T...LMAO Hopefully noone ever shoots me or I suppose I too shall be a victim of this "dark humor"....I can see it now irritating poster on death penalty boards is murdered for not agreeing that killers deserve a 2nd chance........LMAO Sorry I have the lights on here so my "dark humor"is suffering some.

I didn't post the article to start a religious war. Heaven knows there have been enough of them over time.

I think we all agree:
1) it's a shame that a young man was killed simply for "being there"
2) that the surviving young man could use all of the good wishes and hopes for recovery (mentally and physically)
3) we all should be vigilant (not vigilante!) about what goes on around us

And for those of you who seem to be receiving more than an occassional visit from a missionary - ask them to put you on a no contact list, or put up a small but point blank sign near your door bell "No Missionaries, Please". Most (granted not all) of the individuals who proselyte door to door aren't trying to be rude - Mormon missionaries change areas with some frequency and they simply don't know of your desire unless you make it explicite - they simply have a message to share that is important to them and want to make sure it reaches anyone who will listen.

Yep, that could be me! How about irritating poster on death penalty boards murdered when protesting in front of prison in favor of death penalty? I dunno, needs something a bit more to really make it funny. I'm a computer programmer, so how about a person driven nuts by a piece of buggy software (not written by me). Computers are definitely enough to drive a person nuts!

But yeah, the 1000 words or less version is - "What the heck are you talking about - no one has said or proposed what you are asking me to explain!".

Excellent advice.Back when I lived in Virginia our area was picked by Jehova's Witnesses to be converted.I tried the signs,I tried ignoring them, and I tried poilteness. All were met with failure. So I got creative....1 day when they came and asked if we could share scriptures I said sure come on in.Since we were "sharing"I got my BOM and began reading scriptures from it to them....LOL It worked, they tore out like I had the plague or somethin, almost tore my mailbox down with their car...lol .This was 5 yrs ao and I am happy to report that as of last week my X says she has had no further calls from the JW's....I guess being a morman does have its bright side afterall...LMAO

.....I'm not blaming them for their deaths, nor saying they annoyed enough people that one of them went out and shot them. But it is a little darkly humorous, especially to anyone who has previously been subject to all the annoying people who knock on your door to bring you nothing you have requested nor shown any interest in.

WHAT KIND OF A PERSON ARE YOU? How could you possibly use that phrase in regard to a senseless and uncalled for cold-blooded killing of an innocent young person and the wounding of another!

I am absolutely shocked that anyone could find any type of "humor" in this situation.

The mormon missionaries are about the best America has to offer. Young, fit, smart men who give up time in their young lives to provide mission services. What strong characters.

Shame on you, Details. Really. Rethink your position.

From what I heard on the Denver radio this evening, the young man will recover. He is from the Greeley, Colorado area.

We have recently had two young men in our area. They were driving a car registered to the LDS church out of Colorado Springs. We serviced their vehicle recently. They were very polite and did not try to convert anyone. My DAR meets at the Local LDS church and we have free use of their Family History Center there for genealogical research. None of us have been bothered to join. The BarnGod and I have given them wagon rides for one of their family dinners as well as had the square dance group come in and teach dancing afterwards. It was a lovely evening and a lot of fun. The LDS chruch members in this area are members of our community and friends and neighbors.

I know most of you know the Mormon missionaries as the young men who wear white shirts and ties and are normally riding bicycles but I bet many of you didn't know that they also spend at least 4 hours a week doing community service and that is a minimum. Normally it is way above that amount. I did a little search to see if I could find any mention of service provided by these fine young men and here are a few that I found.

Nearby, landscaper Guillermo Mandujano and several employees were filling countless sandbags and lining a wall of a large building overlooking the river.

Two Mormon missionaries were walking by when they saw the men at work and offered to help. Dressed in a white, short-sleeved dress shirt and tie, Greg Cook said he'd never filled sandbags before, but the North Carolina resident didn't mind.

"I knew I'd be giving some kind of service when I came here," he said.

Church Aid Reaching Victims in Southern Asia

SALT LAKE CITY — The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is calling on its worldwide membership as well as its global humanitarian resources in order to channel aid to areas critically affected by the southern Asian tsunamis.

Missionaries are volunteering at the tourist information center in Bangkok, providing translation services to assist in locating missing persons. Body bags have been provided at government request.
Food and water are being provided for distribution by local relief agencies.
Church members and missionaries are assembling and distributing hygiene kits and family kitchen sets (cookware for a small family).
A cash contribution has been made to a national relief fundraising campaign.

Theresa Hamilton held her back straight, gripping the broad sides of a brown mare with her legs for balance. The 25-year-old Oakdale woman clicked her tongue at the horse, then looked down at the young men who walked slowly on either side of the animal.
She smiled broadly.

Hamilton is a client at Hold Your Horses -- a therapeutic riding academy in Oakdale -- and she is benefiting from the volunteer help of young Mormon missionaries who devote several hours a week to the facility.

Mormons put down Bibles for chain saws to serve neighbors
http://www.heraldonline.com/local/story/1999530p-1941545c.html

By Caroline Brustad The Herald
Four young men spent most of Friday trying to help some neighbors in need.
Decked out in sweatshirts, jeans and work gloves, they used chain saws to cut down a mammoth section of a century-old oak tree that fell onto Bobby and Catherine Hall's home during this week's ice storm.

The four, members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, noticed the damaged home and its crushed front porch while driving to the store

I normally don't post, I'm actually an avid reader (was up til 3 am the first night I found you guys!!), but I have twins who are 14 and are boys. I can't imagine what these parents are going through.

I can't get over someone using the word "Humor" and "Murder" or "Killing" in the same sentence. I'm shocked. I too had to re-read the posts over and over to make sure that I read correctly. Dark humor is one thing, but a triple shooting, one shot killing an innocent man, is entirely another. I agree that if this report was about a couple of white college guys walking up on a drug bust gone bad, that it would be totally different.

Me and my hubby are like a couple of people that have already posted, I would have simply said "No, thanks, I have different beliefs." While my husband would have sat in the upstairs window and dropped water ballons on them. This was NOT about someone shooting at someone because of their religious beliefs, this was about someone being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The guy who shot these guys didnt know who they were. The guys didnt even talk to the shooter. They walked up on a bad scene.

Ya know, the reporter who wrote the story could have left out the fact that they were LDS. But they knew that it would get more reaction to have it published in this light.

Wanna talk Karma? Send a girl scout to my house to sell me cookies while I'm in the middle of a diet ... that's Karma. ;)

While I have several good friends who are Mormons, I've only had missionaries come to my door once. We talked for a short while and, as they were getting ready to leave, they asked if there was anything they could do for me, such as yard work, as my leg was in a cast. Looking at all the leaves in my yard, I jokingly told them they could rake them up for me. When they said they'd be back in the morning to do that, I told them I was only kidding. But they showed up bright and early the next day, ready to work. They spent the whole morning working in my yard. Before they left, I fixed them something to eat and asked them if they would give me their mothers' email addresses. I wrote to both of their mothers, telling them what fine young men they raised and how proud they must be of them.

Maral - that's exactly my experience with mormon missionaries. Exactly. They are such sweet men, if they accidentally let your dog out when they arrive they chase it down. Several blocks if that's what it takes. Really, really nice young men.

There were two young ladies at the function we did for the local LDS church with our horses and wagon for a hayride. They could not participate in the square dancing, but were serving covered dish dinner. They were very sweet young ladies and helped out doing computer work for our local History Society by listing graves for our upcoming website.

Which part of my position? That it's a shame, and a rotten thing that they were killed? That I don't like missionaries of any kind coming to my door? Or that I can find an ironic type of black humor in a sad situation?

I've got nothing I'm ashamed of about my position. I don't demand that others see the humor, some people do get black humor, others don't.

It was a simple enough comment, the headline of this thread hit me as a little funny (especially the echos of old stories about Missionaries under attack in the jungles and other 'primitive' areas they went to to convert).

I remember my mom telling me about when she lost a child she'd taken care of in day care for some years. He was walking out to a school bus, and got hit by a car and killed. She was miserable, of course, spent quite some time crying. In the middle of that she had the sudden thought about how relieved he must have been - there was a test that morning, and he wasn't good in school - and she started laughing. You can have both - sorrow and laughter, see the humor even in the worst situation.

Lots of jokes, lots of humorous situations aren't so funny to the people inside of them... ever tell a lawyer joke? Not funny if they were taken as serious threats to the lives of lawyers; but I know many lawyers who even tell, collect, and enjoy lawyer jokes.
