Gunman in fatal Old Dominion University shooting previously convicted of ISIS support, officials say

The shooter opened fire just before 10:49 a.m. at ODU's Constant Hall in Norfolk, Virginia, killing one person and wounding two others. The gunman is also dead.

The gunman who opened fire Thursday morning at Old Dominion University, killing one person and wounding two others, was previously convicted of providing material support to ISIS, two senior law enforcement officials briefed on the matter told NBC News.

The shooter was identified as Mohamed Bailor Jalloh, 36, of Sterling, Virginia, the officials said. The gunman is also dead.

The victims have not been identified. Two of them are members of the school’s ROTC program, NBC affiliate WAVY of Portsmouth, Virginia, reported.

“We can confirm that two members of the university ROTC program were shot and were taken to a local hospital to treat their injuries,” the U.S. Army Cadet Command told the station in a statement.

Officials said Jalloh allegedly targeted an ROTC class and was a former member of the Army National Guard.

Not at all surprised. I hope those others who were injured survive and thank God there was a brave soul who tackled this terrorist.

He was a naturalized US citizen, so that wasn't an option.

From your link :
Dominique Evans, special agent in charge of the agency’s Norfolk field office, said that he shouted “Allahu Akbar” and was subdued by students who, “rendered him no longer alive.”
Rbm.

I kind of like how that was stated !
Short and succinct.

Thankful no one else was killed.

Here's the perp's statement from the above link, at his sentencing hearing in 2017 :

At his sentencing hearing in 2017, Jalloh told the judge that “this entire crime is not who I am, it’s not who I plan to be, and it’s not who I have been.”
Rbm.

Looks like he showed his true self in the end.
For how many years did Jalloh's anger fester ?
Imo.

What an atrocious day. A whole run of terrorist attacks.

Thank God in the synagogue attack, none of the children were harmed.

Yes, Brandon Shah, R.I.P., and thank you for your service, as a career and all the way through to your tragically premature end.

Dominique Evans, special agent in charge of the FBI's Norfolk field office, said a group of Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) students subdued and killed the suspect who shouted "Allahu Akbar" before opening fire in a classroom inside Constant Hall. She did not provide further details on the incident, but noted that the suspect was not shot.

"There were students that were in that room that subdued him and rendered him no longer alive," Evans said at a news conference. "I don't know else to say it, but they basically were able to terminate the threat."

A devoted ROTC instructor, Lt. Col. Shah didn’t just lead a life of service to our country, he taught and led others to follow that path," Spanberger said.

His Old Dominion bio states he was a professor of military science and a department chair. It also indicated Shah received an MBA from the University of Georgia and the Terry College of Business.

Shah also enlisted in the Army in 2003 as an Aviation Operations Specialist. He last served, according the website, as the Brigade S3 in the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, Hunter Army Airfield, Savannah, Georgia.

“The horrific tragedy that occurred today on ODU’s campus never should have happened,” U.S. Rep. Jen Kiggans, who represents the congressional district neighboring the university, wrote on Facebook.

After Jalloh pleaded guilty in October 2016 to providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization — the Islamic State group — a federal judge sentenced him in 2017 to an 11-year prison term with credit for time served retroactive to his July 2016 arrest.

Jalloh was released from federal custody Dec. 23, 2024. It wasn’t immediately clear why his release from prison was moved up. Inmates can get time off of their sentences for a variety of reasons, but it isn’t known if that happened in this case.

He was on supervised release, which is comparable to probation, when he carried out the attack on Thursday. Based on his release date, that would’ve run into 2029.

He was a naturalized US citizen, so that wasn't an option.
I'm surprised it wasn't an option for someone convicted for what he was. I'd say if it isn't an option in cases like his, then it should be. If someone becomes a citizen and is serving in the armed forces and then is convicted of trying to provide material support to ISIS or other terrorist organizations, then they should serve their time and get a one-way ticket out of the US when they are done.

This is info pertaining to what he was previously charged with and pled guilty to. This caught my eye. "attack similar to Fort Hood shooting" I'd say what he just did yesterday was him carrying out the plan he was convicted of trying to carry out 10 years ago. Very unfortunate.

During their meeting, Jalloh also told the CHS that he thought about conducting an attack all the time, and that he was close to doing so at one point. Jalloh claimed he knew how to shoot guns and praised the gunman who killed five U.S. military members in a terrorist attack in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in July 2015. Jalloh also stated that he had been thinking about conducting an attack similar to the November 2009, attack at Ft. Hood, Texas, which killed 13 people and wounded 32 others.
