When the suspect walked in, he asked whether it was an ROTC class, and after someone answered yes, he opened fire, law enforcement sources told the BBC's US partner, CBS News.

When officers arrived, they found that the gunman was already dead, Shelton said.

In a social media post, FBI Director Kash Patel thanked the "brave students" whose actions "undoubtedly saved lives along with the quick response of law enforcement".

Jalloh shot the class instructor, ROTC Professor of Military Science Lt. Col. Brandon Shah, who later died at the hospital, and wounded two others in the class before the students subdued and ultimately killed him.

Another victim was taken to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital Thursday afternoon in critical condition, and another was released after a brief visit to Sentara Independence. The critical patient's condition was upgraded to fair on Friday morning, per a Sentara spokesperson

After commending ODU Police Chief Garrett Shelton and Norfolk Chief Mark Talbot for all they do to keep campus safe, Fatehi, whose wife teaches at ODU, was forceful in his message that the love of guns is a "national sickness."

"Until there is the political will to break the spell of the cult of gun absolutionism, you will see more incidents like his," Fatehi said. "So, if you are looking for somebody to blame, don't look at anybody up here. Look at our lawmakers, who don't have the courage to implement sensible gun control measures.

“The horrific tragedy that occurred today on ODU’s campus never should have happened,” U.S. Rep. Jen Kiggans, who represents the congressional district neighboring the university, wrote on Facebook.

After Jalloh pleaded guilty in October 2016 to providing material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization — the Islamic State group — a federal judge sentenced him in 2017 to an 11-year prison term with credit for time served retroactive to his July 2016 arrest.

Jalloh was released from federal custody Dec. 23, 2024. It wasn’t immediately clear why his release from prison was moved up. Inmates can get time off of their sentences for a variety of reasons, but it isn’t known if that happened in this case.

He was on supervised release, which is comparable to probation, when he carried out the attack on Thursday. Based on his release date, that would’ve run into 2029.

What a complete disgrace. A total failure of our justice system. IMO

I hope the family and friends of Lt. Shah will know that he must have been a terrific instructor.

Here he had a classroom of ROTC students, who while unable to save him during a surprise attack, were still able to execute the terrorist before he could do further harm.

I know two others were wounded, but hopefully they will recover well.

In my mind, the quick responses of Shah’s ROTC students is due to whatever excellent training he’d given them.

I'm surprised it wasn't an option for someone convicted for what he was. I'd say if it isn't an option in cases like his, then it should be. If someone becomes a citizen and is serving in the armed forces and then is convicted of trying to provide material support to ISIS or other terrorist organizations, then they should serve their time and get a one-way ticket out of the US when they are done.

This is info pertaining to what he was previously charged with and pled guilty to. This caught my eye. "attack similar to Fort Hood shooting" I'd say what he just did yesterday was him carrying out the plan he was convicted of trying to carry out 10 years ago. Very unfortunate.

During their meeting, Jalloh also told the CHS that he thought about conducting an attack all the time, and that he was close to doing so at one point. Jalloh claimed he knew how to shoot guns and praised the gunman who killed five U.S. military members in a terrorist attack in Chattanooga, Tennessee, in July 2015. Jalloh also stated that he had been thinking about conducting an attack similar to the November 2009, attack at Ft. Hood, Texas, which killed 13 people and wounded 32 others.
So this US Soldier, trained military man, was a self confessed ISIS member, and admitted that he fantasised about conducting a terrorist attack , actually took vital steps to do so, buying an assault rifle, choosing his location for the crime----which he was modelling after the deadly Fort Hood incident, which killed 13, injured 32.

And they let this vicious creep out of prison on 'good behaviour?'

I wish they would quit showing him in his uniform. He is a traitor and a coward IMO
