VA VA- Unidentified 12-year-old abducted in Spotsylvania, 4 July 2013

If the kid was really on foot- you'd think that the door-to-door would have come up with something by now.

Honestly, I am TERRIBLE at determining some ethnicities. Because I have Sicilians in my family, my perception of "dark skinned" is very skewed. I can often tell by facial features if i get a long enough look, but I have been know to mistake African Americans for Americans of European descent. Especially if it's the summer and people are tan.
I'm not very good at it, either, particularly since I'm mixed-race myself. If I were a witness in a situation like this, I would worry that if I offered a "best guess" that happened to be wrong, I'd throw off the police and possibly help the real perpetrator without intending to.

1:40 PM-

Not necessarily, I can see a parent not being overly concerned yet. But the thing is, LE is going door to door and helicopters are flying over the area. The scene where it happened is cordoned off, that's a lot of activity for someone who lives in the area to miss? Parent(s) could also be working too I guess.

Still hoping against the odds, that this is not what it appears to be.

I just had a thought. What if the kid had already been previously taken and had managed to get away. Then the guy in the van found him again and grabbed him. Could explain why no one has reported a missing kid locally. MOO

This is very scary! I grew up right there in the area (down the road) and my whole family still lives there. I hope it is not what it looks like. :(

But if this is so, why was the kid just walking casually by the road? Why would he bother to stop and look at the bike?

omg this is terrible

the possibility that this kid has already been trafficked is huge

hopefully another alert person will see the van and get them caught

I am also thinking along these lines. It would explain why there is no missing child report.

I think that many children would be curious about a bike lying by the side of the road ... maybe he recognized the bike, maybe he was wondering about the owner, maybe he wondered whether it was abandoned. It sounds like a lure in the sense that it's the perfect lure for a curious child.

Very good point.

This is what I love about this website. Working together and pinging ideas off one another.

To clarify, I meant if it's the case that he was a victim of human trafficking or if he'd been previously abducted and got away, as suggested above, why would he be walking casually by the side of the road and why would he stop to look at the bike instead of getting as far away as possible and finding help?

If it has been reported that the boy was walking casually, maybe he was walking tiredly. Under the possible scenario of having been abducted in a non-local setting and escaping only to be recaptured by the same person, the boy could have been eyeing the bike and wondering if he should take something that wasn't his.

Who knows how a child would react....most of us would think that asking for help would be the thing to do, but it's conceivable that he was trying to use his wits in another way. I think a non-local abduction scenario is not too likely, but anything is possible.

The first link in this thread states that the person who took the boy may have reached across the passenger side of the vehicle and pulled the child in. If so, the witness(es) must have gotten a pretty good look at the man to be able to describe his pants, and even, as the second link indicates, to say that the pants were dirty, as if they were work pants.

I wonder if anyone was able to get the license plate number.

I wonder if the work van belongs to the perp's employer or maybe it was stolen form a business that is closed for the holiday. The owner may not even know it is missing.

It sounds like the boy was dressed in red white and blue in honor of July 4th. That says to me that he probably was not being held captive previously. MOO

I have 8:52 central time right now. What time zone is Spotsylvania?
