VA - Youth Pastor kills family on Thanksgiving, Chester, 24 Nov 2017

  • #41
Christians have failed and sinned and Christ doesn't turn His back on them but some have turned their back on Christ.

Agree. My point is none of us here can say what's going on with this man when it comes to his relationship with his god. He didn't stop being a Christian because he did something bad.

Snip

A deacon at Grace Lutheran Church on Harrowgate Road in Chester confirmed Gattis was a full-time youth pastor there.

The website features a photo of him in a tuxedo, and the same photo was used as Christopher Gattis’ profile picture on Facebook, where the church was listed as his employer since July 2014.

Neighbors, who were shocked to learn of Gattis’ alleged involvement in the killings, confirmed his role with the church and also said his family runs Lighthouse Furniture in Petersburg. Employees at the store declined to speak with a reporter.

Not sure if/how answers are relevant, but I'm curious.

Q1. Are youth ministers ( Lutheran, Christian) typically younger, like in teens, 20s, 30s?

Q2. Are "youth ministers" often a couple, rather than one person?

Q3. Is youth minister a full time paid position at this congregation, or part-time volunteer?

Q4. How long had he been youth minister at this church?

Q5. MSM says his family ran a furniture store. Was he involved/employed?

TiA.

bbm - That's what I was just thinking too. Seems a bit unlikely that he would have escalated from zero to three cold blooded murders all in one night.

At work he had to be friendly, patient, helpful. Maybe at home he was a different kind of guy. Sadly the people who could tell us are all dead.

Hmmm.... agreed and well said.
It's just that one doesn't expect this type of behavior from a 'man of the cloth'. I'd speculate triple homicide is unusual for a person in that profession.

More than some cases... this is surely a W.T.F. moment.

One of the pictures show a liquor bottle on the counter and another has wine glasses at the table. I realize that the alcohol could have belonged to others. Assault chargers...hmmm.
However, WTVR reported that Chris Gattis had past brushes with the law. “Christopher Gattis was charged with public intoxication in 2010 but the charge was waived. He was also charged with assault and battery in 2012, but that charge was dismissed, according to court records,” the television station reported, adding that friends described Gattis as the quiet one in the relationship and his wife as more bubbly.

I think if he had shot his family while being intoxicated he would not have looked as he did in his mugshot. He would have been looking either still drunk, or hung over and shocked and remorseful (depending on how soon after the arrest the photo was taken). But he looks sober and okay, as if he has no worries, as if his family did not just die in a horrific shooting at home, and by his own hands.

No I don't think this was loss of temper control due to alcohol. Either he simply lost his temper because that's what he does habitually, or he even planned the whole thing. He looks too relaxed, almost satisfied as someone pointed out above.

ETA: how strict is his religious code, I wonder? Was the fact that his stepdaughter and her boyfriend were living together in his house unmarried a source of grievance for him?

In the mugshot he looks almost like he's holding back a smile.

At least that's my impression.

The crime is atrocious. I hope justice is swift.

BBM. That would be a set of twisted values IMO. Sex before marriage it taboo, but murder is fine.

Looks like Grace Lutheran Church belongs to the Missouri Synod. For those unfamiliar with the Lutheran denomination, there are different "types" of Lutheran churches called Synods. The Missouri Synod is a conservative Synod. They would not approve of couples living together before marriage, but the disapproval would likely be something like, "you can't sleep together as a married couple in my house until you are married," and that would probably be the extent of the reprimand. I can't imagine it being a big enough issue to incite violence, especially for a couple in their 30s.

The church website shows the Grace congregation is LCMS, which is Lutheran Church Missouri Synod: https://www.gracelutheranva.com/

Lovely house, people who looked ‘normal’ and happy, but now 3 are tragically dead at the hand of a man who ministered to teens. There can be no logical explanation for such a horror, but the holidays do bring out the worst in folks sometimes. My speculation is an argument that got way out of hand, with a weapon available, and a person seriously unhinged. So so sad for those that knew and loved these folks. What a terrible loss.

Isn't that the truth ?
It's like people feel 'forced' to be pleasant during festivities... even though they may be boiling on the inside. Then they snap.

I just can't get over his expression in mugshot. He appears smug? self-satisfied? Contentious? Can't place the word I'm looking for it, but it's not sad, apologetic, or unhappy.

His mugshot DOES appear ... 'satisfied'. Which is more frightening than if he was in shock -- or in a fit of rage.
Creepy beyond reasoning..
Maybe his wife knew what he was and had planned to leave him, and he found out ?

Apparently whomever hired Gattis failed to do a background check.......Or didn't care about his past record. Smdh.

I have known 2 couples who reconnected again through school reunions, both turned out really badly. I am sure that there are ones that haven't, but I only have experience of the two that I know.

I also think there are such high expectations of family gatherings at the holidays to be full of love and togetherness, that it may become impossible to fulfill the vision we have in our minds. There is a bit of dysfunction in most every family I believe. The healthiest ones acknowledge that less-than-perfect is OK rather than perpetuate the false image. IMHO of course.

Thank you for the link!

In the photos where he and Jeanett are having fun together he doesn't look genuine to me. jmo

Imo this man was troubled.

I think most all of them, both of them look a bit strained. What I found most interesting is the change in his facial features, in the mugshot. His face looks kinda swollen. Like someone you'll see who is on some types of medication(s), or who is a heavy drinker.

Self deleted... do not want to turn this thread into a religious discussion.
