Venezuela - President Nicolas Maduro & his wife "captured and flown out of country" by U.S. Army Delta Force during "large scale attack" - Jan 3, 2026

Thanks for finding that. The main question was why she wasn't indicted in 2020 along with her husband? At least one of these accused crimes is noted as 2007. Then, if she wasn't indicted before they took her, how can that occur?
Good question and applies to their son also. Was a grand jury somhow involved or is it all DEA, FBI and HS authority? Congressional action certainly wasn't involved in the decision beforehand, as has been widely reported.

Rodríguez may need to avoid any public show of betrayal to keep herself safe in Venezuela. But after portraying her as cooperative on Saturday, Trump issued a dark threat on Sunday. “If she doesn’t do what’s right, she is going to pay a very big price, probably bigger than Maduro,” he told The Atlantic.

This brings me, a girl born and raised behind the Iron Curtain, quite vivid memories of Soviet dignitaries in early eighties, telling our government to quash the workers' protests ASAP, or we will pay the price. Not exactly a vibe you want to go for as a head of a country that supposedly loves freedom so, so much...

IMO, of course.

I'd agree with every word of that, but it isn't how the United States sees things. See Ker v Illinois from 1886.

Essentially, the law in the United States is that if agents acting under the authority of the United States kidnap you from anywhere in the world and can get you back to the United States, then you can be put on trial in the United States.

Now we may say "but, International Law..". Unfortunately, International Law is not unlike the Pirate Code, in reality.
You mean it's just guidelines really? That's where ethics would come into the mix. Seems pirates may have had a leg up on those compared to others "run"ning things today? JMO, observations...query.

"For months, US spies had been monitoring Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro's every move.
...
Then, in early December, a planned mission dubbed "Operation Absolute Resolve" was finalised. It was the result of months of meticulous planning and rehearsals, which even included elite US troops creating an exact full-size replica of Maduro's Caracas safe house to practise their entry routes.
....
The troops arrived at Maduro's location shortly after the strikes began at 02:01 local time, according to Gen Caine. Trump described the safe house as a military "fortress" in the heart of Caracas, saying: "They were in a ready position waiting for us. They knew we were coming."

....

Briefing Congress ahead of time would have endangered the mission, Rubio told reporters during the news conference on Saturday. "Congress has a tendency to leak," Trump added. "This would not be good."
_______
So Madura knew they were coming, Could not tell Congress bc of leakers per Trump ...yet it seems it was leaked anyway.

It's absolutely illegal. There will be no consequences. The sooner we start thinking of Trump's US as a land-grabbing empire and not a modern republic, the more sense all of this will make. Rule of law doesn't come into it.
Ah there you have it. Rule of who's law? Just a rhetorical question as the answer seems pretty obvious, to me. AJMO

I don't see that there is any bias from moderators regarding negative posts of Biden or Trump. It seems quite fair to me. If mods find something offensive or against TOS on with a Trump or Biden post, it will get deleted. That is not censorship. It is just against TOS.
I beg to differ moo

The prosecution of Maduro will be based on U.S. criminal law. There is an indictment, an arrest, and the court will proceed with the criminal charges against him. Hopefully he will spend the rest of his life in prison, like Noriega.
Yes I can see that happening. However who's left minding the house? Is a babysitter needed for the rest of the adults? Who exactly should be choosing and hiring them? It's a big mess down there, there's money just strewn all around, good, ethical money and nasty, dirty money. Who should decide, that is the big question. AJMO

I'm curious if people who support this action with its loss of civilian life would also support LE seizing a drug trafficker living nextdoor while killing dozens of your family/neighbours in the process. We got him! 👍

The world. An international law The US helped to create and agreed to abide.
Yes, some could say though when domestic law is thrown to the wind international law takes flight too. That seems to be the weather. JMO

Do we know that any actual civilians were killed? I gather that there was a fire-fight which presumably killed some Cuban security guards and intelligence personnel.

While I don't think any normal human being "supports" loss of innocent civilian life during an LE or military action, we all know that tragically sometimes, it's going to happen.

ETA: while it hasn't been confirmed yet any civilian lives were lost, the same still applies.

That's the same news I've read. I haven't seen any confirmation civilians were killed.

"The Cuban government has said 32 of its nationals were killed during the US operation to seize Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro. It said the dead were members of its armed forces and intelligence agencies, with two days of national mourning declared."
... "Venezuela has not confirmed how many people were killed during the US raid on Maduro's compound in Caracas on Saturday. The New York Times, citing an unnamed Venezuelan official, reported on Sunday that the death toll stood at 80 and was expected to rise. BBC News has not independently verified that report."

Military action also happens domestically now. Hope that doesn't become regular💔

When bombs are dropped, loss of life is inevitable. The US weighed it up and decided these lives were expendable. Cruel, callous, heartless - but they got their guy.
