I studied English lit in college, not criminal science, but one of the standard jokes from the colonial era up to when public hanging went out of style was that the most likely place to get your pocket picked was at the hanging of a pickpocket.

Systems don't work because of punishment. They work because people like us believe in the rules and follow them because everybody's life is better that way. Yes, there will always be criminals, but if harsher and harsher sentences haven't reduced the number of murderers, rapists, and child molesters, then there's something else going on that needs to be addressed at the root.

off topic, sorry...

Simple, common-sense parenting.
Yep......the kind where your parents gave a carp and you knew some boundaries. Not the "new age friendship" style of parenting, and not the "rule by the stick" parenting but something in the middle of those two extremes.

Alas, I fear there's not enough time for that in our busy, rat-race society.

Re:Lynchburg episode: The 1st news link said that Shawn Martin died.

There is this story at another news organization that says that Levon Deshawn Martin, 29 is the one that died and they were there to serve a warrant on one Kenneth Leon Ford.

http://www.newsadvance.com/news/local/article_22f24d84-0a07-11e3-90c4-001a4bcf6878.html
"Police have yet to release the man's name, but neighbors identified him Wednesday as Shawn Martin.

"He comes here all the time. He's my buddy," said Jack Jones, who lives at 2224 Tulip Street, the address where police went Tuesday attempting to serve a warrant on Kenneth Leon Ford on probation violation charges."

Both of these men have serious previous drug distribution charges. Martin served six months of a five year sentence and Ford served one year of a five year sentence. He was arrested within one year. He was arrested on similar charges. He is currently a fugitive.

Levon Deshawn Martin was from Amherst, VA
Kenneth Leon Ford, is from Lynchburg, VA

Slightly off topic:
I disagree that we have harsher penalties. On the books the sentences are there but the suspension of sentences, down to even 10% (example: 5 year sentence-4.5 years suspended) seems to be the norm.

Therein, IMO, lies the problem. If you are guilty then serve the entire sentence, WTH! Why have a sentence if it is simply suspended down to either nothing or 10%.

Well, good luck everyone. I will continue to read, but really I have nothing else to contribute at this time; (if I have any epiphanies, I'll let you guys know, lol).

I hope Alexis' family gets some answers. I believe that the LE presence is strong in this case. I look forward to seeing what evidence they will present (I think)...

Right, JustK...

And there comes a point, realistically, when you look at a perp's "rap sheet" and realize that he/she is non-rehabilitative and has cost the tax payer millions of dollars (judicial fees/court cases & appeals/prison) and has created destruction his/her entire life.

At what point can we make that determination and basically throw away the key? Seriously.

More times than not, when we see people getting abducted or assaulted....it is done by repetitive criminals with rap sheets a mile long.

Productive citizens and taxpayers are getting tired of paying to be victims. And that is what it is.

I was thinking the same thing. I don't see him with a credit card or a debit card.

Again, makes me wonder what other aliases he has other than Breeden (not that he would have a credit card under another name; I'm just saying that this reminds me of the possibility of alternate aliases and wondering if anyone has come across anything relating to that? If so, I would imagine it would be in the RAT background thread...).

<Gee, that lasted long, see my above post, #104, lol>

*I must admit, I thought this case was going turn out being related to an online predator (not that this isn't a possibility with RAT); I just didn't anticipate the local connections in this case.

I pointed out that it was pure speculation because the poster I responded to seemed to be taking it too seriously. There is zero evidence that this is even a remote possibility, and I don't really know of many (any?) of this sort of car junk yard in Nelson. It's just very out of left field, and was more trying to direct the focus of the discussion toward the actual facts of the case.

Personally, I don't think much of RAT as a master criminal type. I suspect that worst case her body will be found in the mountains of Western Nelson, or best case maybe alive in the basement of someone's remote cabin in that area (along with Samantha Clark). Both of those being based on the previous tip of his truck seen leaving that area the following morning with mud on the side of it.

There seem to be some results when I plug this into google:

"junk yard nelson county, virginia"

As I said, I have a lot of posts to catch up on, and maybe I'm jumping in here a little prematurely, and if so, I apologize; it is rather rude to just jump in without reading the whole conversation, but I do just want to say as far as left field theories here on WS, I believe all possible theories are welcome here. If you visit some other WS threads, you will hear all kinds of crazy theories (what's even crazier is that sometimes the cases turn out to be crazier than the possible crazy theories that people posted). That's what this place is all about, imo, brainstorming and coming up with ideas together. I'm all about facts too, and the facts in this case seem to indicate an alleged perp with a strong familiarity and level of experience with ALL THINGS CARS (car wash, repo man, sales lot, mechanic, painting, auto detail...) I'm willing to bet my bottom dollar (easy for me since I have no money, haha) that there could be a relation somewhere to something AUTOMOTIVE. Especially since there is a lengthy criminal record history.

Anything about RAT that can help lead us to Alexis (any other possible victims or evidence/leads)...

JMO.

The man arrested in Lynchburg ...Shawn Martin ...died. :0
Did he or the other man have cornrows?

Can someone provide a link to an article that stated RT paid at Bliss with 100$ bill?
Everyone is stating it as a known fact, but I guess I must have missed that article. TIA

Okay, I see what you're saying.

But the vast majority of people who are committing $200 breaking and entering and driving with illegal equipment are not going to escalate to becoming rapists, kidnappers, or murderers.

carbuff, I honor your opinion and agree that most misdemeanor violators do not morph into sexual predators/serial killers. Most sexual predators/serial killers, however do have a very long rap sheet of misdemeanors and other indicators such as traits that distinguish them from common criminals. RAT has many of these traits. Due to plea negotiations/deals, rap sheets can be very misleading in most cases, imo.

Rat's friend that indicated his move from New Jersey was law enforcement related, as well as other eyeopening info that he shared is very concerning, imo..

Missing persons investigations were often low priority in the past, especially runaways, prostitutes, or adults which may not be considered by LE as missing against their own will..

"The silence by investigators and the Justice System in the Alexis Murphy investigation is tragic, imo".. "Silence is the predators most lethal weapon"...

IIRC, the last ping was near the stop light at Liberty, and was immediately after she was seen at Liberty. The last call was reported by family to have been to her voicemail. LE spent several days searching Cannery Loop (Lane whatever it was called) looking for the cellphone since that's where it last pinged. Remember they even searched homes looking for it.

This still has me thinking that someone got into the back of her car while she was at Liberty. They probably told her to give them her cell phone or they snatched it from her, turned it off, and then tossed it out the window.

I was looking back at 19 year old Dashad "Sage" Smith case. Dashad had contacted 21 year old Erik Tyquan McFadden on the day she disappeared from Charlottesville in November 2012. LE had been trying to locate Erik since they last spoke to him by phone but could not find him. They think Erik has moved out of Charlottesville. His picture caught my attention. Could he be the real cornrow dude?
