Video shows former Lawrence police officer shoot driver during May 29 traffic stop

Police dash cam video released Monday shows a driver wrestle a Lawrence police officer to the ground and fight him before being shot in the back by another officer during a traffic stop last year.

Brindley Blood, the officer who shot the man, is charged in Douglas County District Court with reckless aggravated battery. Blood has maintained the May 29 shooting was accidental and she meant to reach for her stun gun instead of her firearm.

Welp, if you're stupid enough to attack a police officer during a traffic stop, then you deserve to get shot. If he wouldn't have attacked the officer he wouldn't have gotten shot, it is 100% entirely his own fault and the officer who shot him shouldn't be charged with anything at all. IMO.
they attacked him then shot him.

No. The driver got out of the vehicle and attacked the male officer and got him on the ground. Then the female officer intervened to help and shot the driver who was still acting out of control. It's all right there in the video.

I wonder if he was afraid to do anything as getting out a license can be a death sentence

Yes, he was paralyzed with fear...as evidenced by the vicious physical attack on the police officer. Did you even watch the video?

It literally says they grabbed him and dragged him. He was profiled then attacked and then shot.

No. From the article:

"The motorist, Akira S. Lewis, had been pulled over for not wearing a seat belt and refused to comply with demands from Officer Ian McCann to hand over his driver’s license and insurance information.

Throughout the video, Lewis repeatedly said he was singled out by McCann, who he said didn’t stop other motorists for not wearing their seat belts. Lewis asked McCann to summoned a supervisor. McCann refused to do so.

McCann called for backup and told Lewis he would be arrested if he did not cooperate.

“You’re about to go to jail on a seat belt violation, are you really wanting to do that?” McCann is heard asking in the video. “You could give me your driver’s license, I could write you a ticket and you can drive home.”

Lewis responded: “I haven’t done nothing.”

After Blood arrived, McCann opened the car door and physically removed Lewis from the vehicle.

Blood tried to intervene as McCann and Lewis wrestled. She pulled her gun and shot Lewis on the back of his shoulder."

You can see the driver get out of the car and attack the police officer. But even if the officer was trying to remove the driver from the car, it's the driver's own fault for forcing things to escalate to that level. A law-abiding citizen with nothing to hide would have simply provided their driver's license and insurance and there would have been no need to get out of the car or be removed from the car. Instead, he aggressively attacked a police officer and got himself shot, he could have been killed. Was it worth it?

Also, take note that the driver was charged:

"Lewis, who survived the shooting, was charged in Douglas County with battery on a law enforcement officer, interference with a law enforcement officer, no proof of insurance and driving without a seat belt."

Hmm, not seeing what you are saying here:

“Police dash cam video released Monday shows a driver wrestle a Lawrence police officer to the ground and fight him before being shot in the back by another officer during a traffic stop last year.”

(
I might add that when an attacker is on top of the cop , the shot from the officer coming to the aid of the officer being attacked is going to be aiming from behind, hence the back wound.)

At about 624 in this video, you can see the driver slug the officer for the first time. Play stupid games, win stupid prizes.

HELLO, she hollered "Taser, taser, taser" before she shot him. So she was telling the truth when she said she mistakenly shot him.

5:29 they open his door grab him and try to drag him out onto the street.

With the epidemic of police executions of POC with no consequences, I would be terrified if I was him.

And Eric gardner was accused with something before he was wrongfully choked to death.

The action of attempted execution is not an appropriate response for an unbuckled seatbelt

WAgtales10, we'll have to agree to disagree. I'll agree with Douglas & Johnson Counties.

Officer: You are not wearing your seatbelt and I ignored other drivers and profiled you.
Motorist: Why?
*forcibly opens driver door, drags him out, attacks him*
*Terrified self defense by driver being attacked*
Officer: taser! oops I shot you.

This guy was not terrified, he was aggressive and rude from the time the officer approached. He tried to escalate the situation and intimidate the officer from the very beginning. He ended up coming out of his vehicle fighting...for no better reason than that he knew he didn't have insurance and he was guilty of not wearing his seatbelt.
He was going to have to pay a fine because he couldn't obey the rules like an average citizen. Anybody with an ounce of common sense knows that the best action he could have taken was to have accepted that he was in the wrong. He may have gotten nothing but a warning if he'd admitted that he was in the wrong to begin with.

no. He was pulled out by a police officer. It is show in the video at 5:29 and stated in the article.

Other citizens were not pulled over for seat belts and profiling is an issue statistically proven,

Why was he pulled out by the officer? Because he was not obeying the officer's direction to get out of the vehicle. The driver was pulled over for not wearing a seat belt because the officer noticed it; there's no proof of profiling in this case.
