The US Border Patrol agent murdered during a traffic stop with an migrant in Vermont was an Air Force veteran who survived the 9/11 attack on the Pentagon, his family said.

David “Chris” Maland, 44, died Monday afternoon after a shootout with a German national on Interstate 91 about 20 miles from the Canadian border, federal officials have said.

This is very, very odd. Killed by a 21 year old woman from Washington state and a German national? with a ton of tactical gear in the car? What the heck were they doing?

I don't even know what part to quote because all of it is so shocking, but:

"Maland stopped Youngblut and Felix Baukholt on Interstate 91 in Coventry on Monday because Baukholt appeared to have an expired visa, according to an FBI affidavit. During the stop, Youngblut opened fired on Maland and other officers and Baukholt tried to draw a gun but was shot, the affidavit states. At least one border agent fired on Youngblut and Baukholt, but authorities haven't specified whose bullets hit whom.

Investigators had been performing “periodic surveillance” of the pair since Jan. 14 after an employee at a hotel where they were staying reported concerns about seeing Youngblut carrying a gun and both of them wearing all-black tactical gear. Investigators attempted to question them but the pair declined to have an extended conversation and said they were in the area looking to buy property."

This just gets weirder. From the NYT Article:

The pair had been observed a few hours before the shooting buying aluminum foil at a Walmart in Newport, Vt., and then using it to wrap various unidentified objects while sitting in a parked Toyota Prius hatchback. After the shooting, agents at the scene found what appeared to be cellphones wrapped in aluminum foil. A bomb squad recovered additional electronics from inside the car, including more cellphones and multiple laptop computers.
Does wrapping a cell phone in foil actually do anything? Because it seems very tinfoil-hat-esque to me.

The two suspects involved in a shootout that killed a U.S. border patrol agent in northern Vermont had an arsenal of weapons and tactical gear, including 48 rounds of .380-caliber jacketed hollow point ammunition, a ballistic helmet and night vision equipment, according to court documents unsealed Friday.

Parents of Teresa Youngblut told officers they were fearful she was in a controlling relationship and was being forced to cut off contact with her friends and family, according to a copy of a May 15 report provided by the Seattle Police Department.

And hanging around a Walmart in Newport and stopped in Coventry????? So.... they were always on the US side during all this surveillance????
Do we have to consider that they were planning on doing harm in Canada?????

Bauckholt and Youngblut sound bizarre. IMO, possibly MH issues involved, along with the possibility of extreme ideologies.

I suppose the goal of covering the cellphones with aluminum foil would be to simulate putting them in Faraday bags, to prevent signals from getting through. I don't know if this would work. The .380 jacketed hollow point ammunition is very ordinary small pistol ammunition; nothing unusual about it. It is not used in military tactical weapons, except in very rare or obsolete examples. The 48 rounds would likely be what's left from a common 50 round box of pistol ammunition. The .380 round is often used in pocket or compact pistols. It was once used as a police round in some European countries, but is not considered powerful enough for police use.

I think these 2 individuals may have been planning some kind of attack in Canada. JMO

This Toronto Sun article has more information on Bauckholt, noting that he graduated from the University of Waterloo, in Waterloo, Ontario. Youngblut graduated from the University of Washington with a degree in computer science.

From this article, it seems her parents feared she was being manipulated by an 'older man' after she moved out, changed her phone number and cut off all contact with them. They reported her missing in May.
Article goes on to say that:
About six months later, Youngblut, then 20, filed a marriage license application in King County with a 22-year-old man, according to a copy of the record filed Nov. 5. The pair both listed an address of a condo in Kirkland. There is no record of the pair marrying in King County.
This presumably would have been a different man, not Bauckholt, since he would have been much older than 22, having gone to college from 2015-2019 per his LinkedIn profile.

I suspect it still may be him. Everything I've read seems to be referring to him as a genius and brilliant.

He won a gold medal at the Mathematics Olympiad in 2014. I dated a guy in high school who did that. He was my age, but two grades ahead of me. It wouldn't surprise me if this guy was in college by fifteen or sixteen. My ex was.

Still some confusing details....

Bauckholt, the registered owner of the vehicle, appeared to have an expired visa in a Department of Homeland Security database, according to court documents. The FBI had previously said the German national involved in the incident was on a current visa.
The court documents do not make clear whether Maland was struck by one of Youngblut’s bullets or a shot fired by a fellow agent.

this above article indicates the same confusing details...

While the FBI said his work visa was current, earlier reports suggested that it had expired.

FBI officials have been unusually quiet and reluctant to release information regarding the investigation, including the names.

It is possible that his visa was renewed recently, but not yet updated as such in the databases available to CBP.
