VT - David Maland, 44YO Border Patrol Agent shot and killed during a traffic stop

Suspects in killings of Vallejo witness, Vermont Border Patrol agent connected by marriage license, extreme ideology.

Both suspects attended the prestigious Lakeside School in Seattle, studied computer science, and appear to sympathize with fringe Bay Area group described as a “murder gang."

Around 2:30 p.m. on Jan. 17 — three days before the Vermont shooting — a man wearing a mask and black beanie allegedly stabbed Lind to death just outside his gated property on the 300 block of Lemon Street in Vallejo, according to police. Lind died at Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center shortly after the attack.

Two of the suspects in the 2022 Vallejo attack — Borhanian and Leatham — were arrested in a strange protest in November 2019 in Westminster Woods, a camping retreat in Occidental, according to the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office. Borhanian and Leathem were arrested for allegedly wearing black robes and Guy Fawkes masks and barricading the wooded retreat to protest artificial intelligence and the Center for Applied Rationality, a Berkeley nonprofit holding its alumni reunion there.

The suspects were uncooperative and spoke incoherently, authorities said at the time. The protesters arrived in a box truck, shuttle bus and Toyota Prius and used the vehicles to block the entrance and exit. Two individuals carried walkie-talkies, another had a body camera and pepper spray and deputies found a written protest plan, the Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office said at the time.

In November 2021, the four protesters sued the retreat and Sonoma County sheriff’s deputies alleging they were tortured and that one was mocked for being transgender.

In a court filing Monday, federal prosecutors said Teresa Youngblut, the 21-year-old suspect in the Jan. 20 killing of a U.S. Border Patrol agent in Vermont, is associated with persons of interest in two recent incidents: a double homicide in Pennsylvania and the Vallejo killing.

Agents found two cell phones wrapped in aluminum foil. On Jan. 21, a federal search warrant for the car turned up a ballistic helmet, night vision goggles, tactical belt, two full-face respirators, 48 rounds of .380-caliber hollow point ammunition, shooting range targets, two handheld radios, a dozen electronic devices with removable storage devices, documents showing travel in multiples states, and Youngblut’s journal, prosecutors said.

Bauckholt and Youngblut had been renting units in separate duplexes in the same neighborhood in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, according to the owner of the buildings, who asked not to be identified because he fears for his safety and that of his other renters.

Bauckholt rented one unit through Airbnb starting in July 2023 and moved to the second unit later that year, the owner said Tuesday. Youngblut began renting the original unit in November 2024 and had paid nearly $10,000 to extend her stay until the end of March, he said.

The owner, who went to the units regularly to pick up the trash, said another man appeared to be living with Bauckholt.

Box trucks were parked outside of both units, he said, and Bauckholt was running an electrical cord to one of them.

In North Carolina, the owner of her (Youngblut's) rental property said he had sent messages to all his renters during a recent cold snap asking them to let their faucets drip to avoid frozen pipes. He didn’t hear back from Bauckholt or Youngblut, but someone renting the other half of Youngblut’s duplex said her hot water wasn’t working. The owner said he went into Youngblut’s unit last week to check the plumbing.

"The thing that struck me the most was that there was a stretcher in the living room. Like, what in the world is going on with these people?” he said.

A day after last week’s fatal shooting of a U.S. Border Patrol agent in northern Vermont, federal authorities issued an alert to firearms dealers seeking information about gun purchases from a person they described as a “person of interest” in the agent’s death.

The alert identified that person of interest as Michelle Jacqueline Zajko, a name that is also listed on public records as the owner of a small plot of land in the Northeast Kingdom town of Derby, which is adjacent to Coventry.

According to Derby town records, a Michelle Zajko bought a half-acre piece of property on Bates Hill Road in Derby in 2021 for $10,000. The land is undeveloped, according to town records.

Voter rolls from last fall in the town of Coventry also list a Michelle Zajko at a separate address.

If Zajko was trying to set up residency in VT, she could purchase firearms there. That might be the purpose of the land purchase or voter registration. California, where the apparent cult/group members live or have lived, has very restrictive firearms laws. Still, VT requires using a licensed dealer and a background check for all firearms sales.

Zajko's parents were shot and killed in a mysterious murder that has its own thread.

So she is officially a POI in this case and can be sleuthed.

Of note, two Zajkos from Delaware County, PA, whose thread is also here on WSs, were victims of an unsolved double homicide by shooting a few years ago. I have not seen any confirmation that Michelle was named a POI in that case.

Edit: working to confirm that Michelle is the daughter of the deceased couple.

Dang, what’s up with the compsci majors recently!?

Here’s a really awesome piece on X from several folks that have been sleuthing the ‘Zizians’ for quite a while.
They believe that a Jamie Zajko (trying to find how Jamie and Michelle Jacqueline Zajko are related and if they’re the same person…UPDATE - they’re the same person.) likely purchased the weapon used on the shooting of Maland.

This just gets weirder. From the NYT Article:

Does wrapping a cell phone in foil actually do anything? Because it seems very tinfoil-hat-esque to me.
It sounds like they were trying to make a homemade faraday cage/bag. It blocks rf signal to the phone to keep it from being tracked. Just wrapping in foil though wont work.

Everybody in the cult had their own box truck. I'm afraid to hear what they were up to in them considering " used surgical equipment" was found in one of the California ones.

The linked article from the Independent notes that Michelle Zajko is a POI in the murder of her parents.

Michelle J. Zajko, who has ties to Vermont, Pennsylvania and Boston, is considered armed and dangerous and also adheres to an “anti-law enforcement ideology,” according to police records obtained by the Times Union. Police agencies in multiple states were told to be on the lookout for Zajko on Jan. 22, two days after 44-year-old Border Patrol Agent David Maland was gunned down during a traffic stop in Coventry, Vt., not far from the northern border.

A multi-state police bulletin issued last week indicates Zajko is a “person of interest in a double homicide that occurred in Pennsylvania in 2023” and said she may be driving a green 2013 Subaru Outback with an expired Vermont registration. In January 2023, Zajko’s parents, Richard and Rita Zajko, who were 71 and 68, respectively, were shot to death inside their residence in Delaware County, Pa.

Russell said Bauckholt, who worked in financial algorithmic trading in New York City, had expressed an idle, philosophical interest in the Zizian ideology before abruptly disappearing, cutting off contact with friends and going dark online in the fall of 2023. Bauckholt was killed last week in the Vermont border patrol shootout in which Snyder’s partner, Youngblut, has been charged.
