Vermont police searching for escaped murderer with ‘666’ tattooed on eyelid: Has ties to Western Mass.
[...]

Bellows Falls and State police searched for Wheelock for several hours after he escaped at about 2:30 p.m., Wednesday. A warrant for his arrest has been issued by the Department of Corrections, police said.

Police confirmed Wheelock was last seen at about 3:30 p.m., Wednesday, outside a store in Bellows Falls. He got into a dark-colored SUV, possibly a newer Nissan Rogue, with Vermont license plates and headed north on Route 5 toward Rockingham. ...

[...]

People are advised not to approach Wheelock but are asked to call 911 immediately if they see him.

“Based on the circumstances surrounding his abscondence and his lengthy remaining incarcerative sentence, Wheelock’s behavior is considered unpredictable and potentially dangerous,” police said.

Convicted murderer disappears from Bellows Falls

20200206-200624-20200206wheelockveh_23299.jpg

Wheelock was last seen getting into this dark-colored SUV,
believed to be a late model Nissan Rouge, with two or three other
people in the vehicle, and heading north on Route 5 in Bellows Falls.

  • Wheelock was convicted of the 1987 murder of James Brillon of Danby at an apt in Ludlow and has been released and returned to jail repeatedly since 2002.
  • He has been in and out of prison since he met his minimum sentence in 2002, but has never been charged with a new crime. He had been in jail since 2017 for a 2016 probation violation until his release last week from the Southern State Correctional Facility in Springfield.
  • According to court records, Wheelock claimed self-defense: he shot Brillon with a shotgun at close range because he thought Brillon was armed with a knife. No knife was found at the murder scene.
  • A VT Supreme Court decision upheld WW's conviction; the two men were drinking heavily, using cocaine, marijuana and Valium. At the time of Brillon's murder, Wheelock was on probation for a burglary conviction.
  • Wheelock was released to an unidentified facility in Bellows Falls last week with the extra oversight of the electronic monitoring bracelet.
  • Once he cut it off, corrections officials were notified, and they notified the Bellows Falls PD. An hour later, at 3:30 p.m, he was seen getting into an SUV in downtown Bellows Falls at the Penguin Mart.
  • There was no sighting of him on Thursday.

This poor victims family! The police need to do increased patrols of this families neighborhood(s). Deputize some “licensed to carry citizens“ if necessary! I’m certain the community members would gladly step up to help this family remain safe!

Certainly, we need to ease up on certain crimes. But murder is not one of them. If he's guilty, he should stay behind bars. Now he's running loose and may cause more harm to society.

Murder victim's family frustrated killer is on the run

The family told WCAX News they are frustrated their loved one's killer is on the run. They call it a reflection of the failing criminal justice system.

[...]

Since his release, Wheelock has been sent back to prison repeatedly for violating conditions of his probation and furlough.

[...]

Wheelock's latest release from prison was just last month. And on Wednesday, police say Wheelock cut off his electronic monitoring and disappeared.

Wheelock posted a status on Facebook on Wednesday afternoon under the name Bill Wheel. It said, "To everyone I love, I'm sorry but I spent the last 32 years. In a cage, I'm not spending the rest of it on a leash" (sic).

MBT says it took more than 24 hours for her family to find out that Wheelock was on the run. She calls that an issue for their safety.

[...]

"I'm not saying the Department of Corrections staff did anything wrong but the serious nature of his history requires me, as a commissioner of corrections, to ask for a review of the process," Baker said.

When it comes to why Wheelock was on furlough, Baker says corrections staff followed the law, even though Wheelock violated his conditions five times.

"We have limitations on what we can do to supervise folks and we try to follow the law," Baker said.
