WA - 6 y.o. hospitalized after (false report of) bullying, Olympia, Aug 2018

I think that 'bullying' accusations are a bit overdone today. The bullies parents claim that their child was bullied, and the other parents claim that their child was bullied. I had a neighbor whose son was suspended from school several times for fighting. She claimed he just hit back because he was bullied. He was 5ft 10 inches when he was 13 and was claiming that he only hit back the 5'2 classmates because they were bullying him.
He was the bully.

I believe people are digging more into this one then is warranted. The kid very likely made up the story for fear of getting into trouble. Children that age don't realize the severity of their injuries. It's entirely possible he was worried that his mother would be upset over his torn clothing after running and falling down a staircase (I may or may not have done something similar, albeit, significantly less damage caused).

Point is, many are already vilifying the mom when there is no reason to believe she was ever aware that the story was a fabrication to begin with. As stated already by another member, parents are much more likely to believe that a child was assaulted. If everyone in the public believed it, why is mom now inept because she did so as well?

As for the sawdust in the eye question, sawdust is a common additive in concrete mixtures and is used in lieu of or in tandem with sand to build density and strength.

But concrete steps don't usually involve sawdust in eyes, do they?

I was only referring to the severity of the injuries being possible. The sawdust wasn't the reason for the surgery.

Exactly where and how he fell has not been explained.

No but it has been pretty clear that it was outside at an apartment complex. That pretty much narrows it down to concrete or concrete/metal steps in my experience. Which could certainly cause those injuries.

It is interesting that he would immediately make up such a story on his own though. Perhaps that's the reason social services is involved? Why he felt the need to lie about it? What he was afraid of?

That’s my thoughts. If a child were hurt this bad they are going to just cry for help. Not worry at that point about getting into trouble and taking the time to make up a story. I mean he would of needed medical treatment ASAP been in pain especially with the eye injury. Unless there is more going on this isn’t what a typicAl kid would do in this exact situation so I see the need for follow up.

I don't know if it was an immediate cry for help. Reportedly mother came home on her lunch break and found him in the state he was in. Not sure who was supposed to have been watching him and how long it was after he fell that she came home.

I find it interesting that the suspicion tend to be tossed back at the mother. It makes no sense. Way too preemptive

Cement is cured it does not shed sawdust after it has set.

This is correct only if ignoring any crumbling concrete which is almost unheard of anywhere concrete is used widely.

I am not sure what you mean by that. Do you think sawdust encased in concrete is going to be flyaway still sawdust?

  • #33
My apologies. I'm sure there is concrete particles on the ground in the form of broken up pieces

Nothing adds up - did he have a sitter? Looks like he was beaten up by an adult - story made up and that had to be dealt with during "lunch break".

Well, however it happened, I hope the poor child is OK. Poor little guy, what horrible injuries.

  • #36
Nobody beat him up, he was injured in a fall, per the police.

There is something wrong here, if a little boy can't tell his mother that he fell and broke his arm and the sawdust thing still puzzles me.

  • #38
Doesn't sound puzzling to me. I presume he fell from some height, put down his hand to break the fall, broke the arm, then hit with his face, getting whatever it was into his eye. And as of now, we don't know what he did or didn't tell his mother.

Yes, but where would there be sawdust in an apartment complex. Maybe in a landscaped garden with wood chips?

Sawdust is a component of the concrete. Concrete could have been crumbling, not in good shape. If he fell onto concrete it could have gotten into his eye.
