"Police allege Atkinson, 32, with his daughter in his van, forced his wife's minivan off the road and then ran her over as she fled through a yard. The woman's last act was to push the couple's three other children out of the way before she was crushed, witnesses and police said.

Earlier Monday, Atkinson had confided his intentions toward his wife to his daughter, police said.

"He had asked her that day if she would be upset with him if he killed Andrea," Spokane police chaplain Kenny Klaja said. "That's not a question a 9-year-old should ever have to answer."


"Witnesses said they heard the 9-year-old girl pleading with her father as he repeatedly backed up and drove over his estranged wife as the couple's three younger children watched. "

Oh how awful for those children, to see their father run over their mother on purpose. I hope whomever takes care of the children ends up getting them into therapy right away!

A three-judge panel said the jury properly convicted Atkinson of first-degree murder, three counts of second-degree assault and one count of reckless endangerment, and Austin properly sentenced him to 50 years in prison – nine years more than the standard maximum.
