Suspects' Mom and Girlfriend Allegedly Knew Missing 16-Year-Old Was Murdered — but Said Nothing
The girlfriend of one of the suspects accused of viciously raping and murdering a 16-year-old boy in Washington in June was arrested this week for her suspected efforts to hinder investigators following the teen’s killing, PEOPLE confirms.
Emma L. Brown, 20, was arrested Wednesday night after turning herself in on a warrant, according to Lewis County Prosecutor Jonathan Meyer.
She is being held at the Lewis County Jail in lieu of $1 million bond, detention records show. Prosecutors say she is expected to appear in court on Thursday. It is unclear whether she has retained an attorney who could speak on her behalf.

Benny's hearing is scheduled for tomorrow, Thursday:

07/12/2018 Arraignment and Trial Setting

Judicial Officer: Lawler, James W
Hearing Time: 03:00 PM

Curious why brothers were not arraigned together. Separate trials? I'm wondering if older brother might cooperate with Prosecutor and testify against little Benny. Supreme court ruling provides that 16 year old charged as adult will be eligible for parole after 40 years. JA may be trying to strike a deal for 2nd degree charge to one day see his child...

its probably because he is a minor charged as an adult. even if he is charged as an adult, the court hearings are not held the same.

Actually, although apprehended together, they were arrested on different days: JA on Saturday and BM on Monday. I know that BM is being held at Juvi and not county jail. Still not discounting JA trying to strike a deal for lesser charge.

on Jonathon - I noticed these:

7/11/2018 Waiver of Speedy Trial
7/11/2018 Order Establishing Conditions of Release
7/12/2018 Arraignment & Trial Setting @ 3pm

So I guess he'll be in court today too....

edited to add - the Waiver of Speedy Trial - did he waive his right to a speedy trial, is that what it means? And "Conditions of Release" ?? I guess that's in case he can come up with 10% of the $10M, eh?

The 7/12/18 hearing was vacated as JA was arraigned on 7/11/18. Lewis County just didn't update court record yet.

Yes, JA waived "speedy trial." (In WA, speedy trial* requires trial in 60 days of arraignment if defendant detained in jail; if not detained, it's 90 days).

*From the legal maxim "Justice delayed is justice denied"

yes, that is entirely possible as well.

UPDATE - MARQUEZ PLEA HEARING RESCHEDULED

Benny Marquez hearing today was delayed a week while he switches defense lawyer. On Thursday, Johnson and Orr represented Marquez in court, but they (and the Lewis County Prosecutor’s Office) indicated local attorney Shane O’Rourke would likely take over. O’Rourke attended but did not participate in the hearing.

There's also a motion by Johnson and Orr asking the judge to order a second autopsy of Ben Eastman.

Judge Lawler did rule Thursday, (as he did with Adamson the previous day), that Marquez could have contact with family other than Adamson, their mother Kindra Adamson, or Jonathan Adamson’s fiance, Emma Brown.

Miami Dolphins Honor Ben Eastman With Signed Helmet
GIFT:Team Sent Keepsake to Slain Teen’s Father

...“When I was 10 years old, I bought a Miami Dolphins hat and that has just been my team ever since,” Eastman told The Chronicle. “It rubbed off on (my son),...."

The package also included a note from Jacob Jenkins, who is the senior vice president of communications and community affairs for the Miami Dolphins.

“Ben, we were so sorry to read about the tragic and senseless loss of your son,” the note reads. “All accounts showed he was an amazing young man. We are so proud to hear about you and your family’s strength and courage during this difficult time. Please accept these small items on our behalf. Let’s stay in touch during the coming months and during the season.”

Seriously, a 16 year old kid. Brutally murdered and sexually assaulted. Multiple family members involved in killing and cover up. I'm still digesting this.

<sigh>

So sorry for you Ben and your loved ones. You and they didn't deserve this, but sometimes life just sucks.

A 2nd autopsy? Why? Why put the family through that?

MOTHER GOT LUCKY WITH JUDGE TOYNBEE....

The day before her sons were arrested, Kindra Adamson told investigators she believed Eastman was using drugs and would likely be home in a few days. She said Eastman “was like a son to her.”

On Wednesday, Meyer asked for $1 million bail for Kindra Adamson,
citing the nature of the underlying case — the beating death of Ben Eastman.

Defense attorney Rachael Tiller, representing Adamson at her first appearance, asked for lesser bail, citing her client’s lack of criminal history.

She said her client denied the allegations.

“Ms. Adamson would like the court to be aware she has been cooperative,” Tiller said.

Through Tiller, Adamson said she allowed investigators on her property multiple times without a warrant, and submitted to questioning on at least 10 instances.

She reported she has been living with family outside Lewis County. She was arrested in Yakima. Meyer responded, saying she wouldn’t have been charged if investigators believed she had truly been cooperative.

Toynbee imposed $100,000 bail and set her next hearing for July 19. BBM

Tiller also asked for Adamson to be allowed to continue to live with family outside Lewis County, but declined to say where, saying her client felt unsafe. Conditions of release from custody typically require suspects to stay in Western Washington.

Meyer again objected, saying, “In fact it was her actions that created a danger for the Eastman family.”

Toynbee ruled with Adamson. “It’s just geography,” he said. “I don’t see any harm in her being farther away from Chehalis than East Lewis County.”

Good morning!

@Seattle1 - on the article in your post #127 - I can't read the article - EU rules - did they give a "date" for next week's hearing for Marquez? TIA!!

and in this article:
Suspects' Mom and Girlfriend Allegedly Knew Missing 16-Year-Old Was Murdered — but Said Nothing

Kindra appeared in Lewis County Superior Court on Wednesday afternoon. It was not immediately clear if she has retained an attorney who could comment on her behalf.
Detention records show she is also being held at the Lewis County jail in lieu of $1 million bond.

So not $100K, but $1M bond, as is Brown. Or not ?? Wonder which article is correct. And unfortunately, the court site doesn't say what it is either.

So was Brown there too as one of the articles said?

TIA!

Never mind on Marquez' court date - it's on 7/19 @ 3pm, same as Kindra's.

edited to add: so does Brown - same date.

Marquez hearing was delayed "until next week" but no date was given in news report announcing he wanted new lawyer and Thursday hearing postponed.

Regarding Kindra Adamson, Prosecutor requested $1mil bail (like the girlfriend) but Mother's lawyer pleaded with court that she had no criminal record, blah, blah, and Judge reduced bail to $100,000. Also allowed Mother to reside in County other than Lewis if/when she's released. Hence my post title: Mother got lucky with Judge Toynbee

To my knowledge, Brown hasn't been arraigned yet so it's possible judge will also reduce her bail. (Brown just turned herself in Weds night on $1MIL warrant for her arrest).

EDIT TO UPDATE: BROWN COURT APPEARANCE AND BAIL REDUCED TO $100,000 - SAME AS MOM KINDRA

UPDATE ON GIRLFRIEND & COURT APPEARANCE

5b47edcee2af0.image.jpg

Emma Brown, 20, makes her first appearance in Lewis County Superior Court Thursday on charges of rendering criminal assistance to suspects in the death of Ben Eastman III.
Jared Wenzelburger / [email protected]

Emma Brown, girlfriend, just appeared in court before Judge Joely O’Rourke, and is being represented by Attorney Jakob McGhie.

Her Attorney first asked for her release on unsecured bail, then for bail no higher than $25,000. Deputy prosecutor Joel DeFazio asked for $1 million bail, the same amount as Brown’s arrest warrant.

McGhie also argued that Brown had been cooperative, and that she was currently breastfeeding a 5-month-old infant and needed to be out of custody.

O’Rourke imposed $100,000 bail, the same amount as Adamson, saying McGhie did not properly file a motion asking for a reconsideration on probable cause.

“I agree with Judge Toynbee’s assessment that there is probable cause,” she added. “I do think bail is warranted.

Boohoo she has a child at home. Ben's family will never see their child again. IMO she has meth face.

The girl doesn't look good. At all. Couldn't even take a shower before turning herself in? I think I would, considering I wouldn't know when I would be able to take a shower next. She has a little baby. I would like to know the extent of this assitance situation, like, what did she do to help him? Or did she just know and didn't say anything? Not defending her in any way because what was done to that boy was simply horrific.
