WA - Cascade Mall, 5 fatalities, Burlington, 23 Sept 2016 *Arrest*

A computer? It must be important to him if he kept it with him. He left the gun. Hopefully the police will share anything interesting with the public. I wonder if it has anything to do with the other terrorist attacks this week.

This case goes to show that usually witness statements are extremely unreliable. An Hispanic lady who was right there, hiding in the bathroom with her children, and texting her sister, said for sure that this was an Hispanic man.

The Hispanic community is not too happy with MSM and LE for putting out a description as "Hispanic". Many of us knew, just by looking at the picture that this person was from the ME and not Hispanic. I'm glad they didn't say he was a mixed race black because we might have more riots on our hands.

I'm glad they caught this 🤬🤬🤬. RIP to all the victims. :rose: :rose: :rose: :rose: :rose:
The first world that came to mind after seeing suspects image was middle easterner, not hispanic.

Ditto, but didn't want to say it.

My DH and I both said he looked middle eastern, not Hispanic. And that was from the grainy video captures on my Ipad. Some people are very poor eye witnesses.

I am known to speak my mind, some have told me that i say what they think but are afraid to say.

I am outspoken but truthful and honest. :)

He looked middle eastern to me as well.

His stepfather married his mother so that's how he ended up here in US. The guns were stolen from his stepfather. The suspect himself wasn't supposed to have guns. Sounds like there were internal family problems between the suspect and stepfather.

"Skagit County court records show Cetin has a criminal record that included three domestic-violence assault charges in both Burlington and Island County, with the victim identified as Cetin’s stepfather. He also was arrested for drunken driving."

Long court history, include court ordered mental exam, from an assault charge, probation visits as recently as a month ago, and many details...

Very calm arrest, according to witnesses and video, without incident. Hands went up, looked surprised he'd been spotted, according to witnesses.

A man suspected of killing 5 people at a Burlington mall Friday night has been arrested after a close to 24-hour manhunt.
Law enforcement sources tell KOMO 4 that the suspect's name is Arcan Cetin.
Centin, 20, has not been convicted of any crimes in Washington state, according to state records[/b)

Ummm.. if he hasn't been convicted of any crimes, how is it he's on probation?

ETA. Figured it out... I believe probation was part of his deferred prosecution agreement.

Being of Middle Eastern descent doesn't automatically qualify this as a terrorist attack. From what I gather, it was an angry man with a vengeance.

He had charges but no convictions. Sounds like judge could still impose conditions on him because of the charges.

This was 5 years ago and nothing since, and THIS is what we're going to say is him developing terrorist ideals? Could be some racist a-hole someone called him that (as happens a LOT to middle eastern descendants in this country) and this was his sarcastic response.

He was mocked in a 2011 fb exchange for being gay, maybe just joking around, that - and comments that he looked like a terrorist, might have been light-hearted jabs , or, one could see that as someone getting bullied for the reasons you outlined.
imo, speculation.

From his twitter he talks about his girlfriend who use to work at Macy's. I am wondering if they broke up and he blamed one of her former co-workers for it. That might explain the reason he called out a woman's name (if it is true he did) before shooting.

Wow! So my guess was at least partially right. One of the women killed has not been identified yet? Is she the connection?

Had assumed that if LE repeatedly stated that poi was Hispanic, that was the narrative they wanted in the public eye. It was an active search for a gunman, so did not want to challenge something so important to public safety, besides, everyone who was there and saw him, might well have been correct.

I got a chance to peruse his Facebook page before it went down. He likes cars, guns, anime, and all things military. His step-father is extremely pro-gun and (sadly ironically) posted quite a bit about mass shootings and who should be blamed. It did strike me that he appeared a little bit military obsessed, but he never entered the military except for junior ROTC (which is just a high school club and isvery different from ROTC proper.) It looks like most of his family is military and he has one relative (step-sister possibly) who just made it into the Air Force Academy.

I bring this up because military-obsessed but rejected from the military seems to be a frequent theme in these sorts of events.

He worked on the Naval base commissary, but my bet is he was rejected from serving in the Navy.
He still managed to sleep through the cracks working on a military base!

His background check would probably come through the civilian contractor who had the commissary contract with the naval base.

Yeah, I bet you are right. If he even tried to enlist (which we don't know do we?) he was probably not accepted for some reason.

Many do not make the cut at boot camp and are culled before even graduation. Some are turned away when a background check is run before they even get to boot camp.

Sometimes I think some have the false impression that most everyone gets in the military if they enlist and want in and that is just not true. Many times each unit will have those who cant make the grade or aren't acceptable material even when applying for enlistment or they failed basic boot camp. There are many various reasons why they may not be accepted.

Although failing to make the cut or failure to become a person in the military doesn't make anyone a mass shooter or murderer either. There have been many thousands in that same position for many years since our military branches began. Instead, when they didn't make it in the military they went on to choose another successful law abiding long lasting career.

A lot more people don't make the cut than some may believe when it comes to the military. In every boot camp training period there will be several each time who will not make it for various reasons.

I don't think his motive was anything to do with terrorism although his computer/phone history does need to be investigated to make sure. Our government has already been grossly inept in these areas already and must step up the pace. Everything about him needs to be known with no stone unturned. While I don't believe he did this because of his radical religious Islamic beliefs..... terrorists do seem to be very angry individuals before they commit their acts of terrorism and I think that uncontrollable anger in general does make some susceptible to become radical terrorists. I sure hope they don't come out later on where the FBI will say they did have him on the radar. The only thing that makes me think he may have developed racial ideology is his undeniable anger and he had to displace that anger somewhere before he did these horrible murders to innocent people. Maybe he displaced his anger against those who loved him .....instead of getting on his computer and letting the social media radical terrorists feed off of his anger he seemed to be consumed with.

I think he just wanted to go kill people. Who the victims were didn't matter to him nor the gender or their age. He had probably been in Macy's several times in this same area when he was going with the other girlfriend. So it was just a location he already knew the layout well. If he was going to target his ex the first thing he would have done is made sure she still worked there, which she didn't, and hadn't for awhile from what I understand. It sounds like he has anti-social traits and cant get along with anyone when it comes to long lasting deep meaningful relationships. . If his own parents wanted to get an order to stay away from them then that is very compelling because parents can be known to put up with serious abuses done to them by their child/children. I would think it had to be a very serious situation for them to even contact police knowing he could get in trouble. His stepfather even seems to know the order to stay away may make it even worse as far as his reaction to it. So it sounds like he was a ticking time bomb and none of it came out of the blue.

He is just another angry loner who wanted to blame all of his own problems on the world around him rather than looking himself square in the face and work on the real problems he created for himself. That seems to be the society we are living in now. Constantly we see others who have done horrific things yet they immediately want to place blame on someone else. Many absolutely refuse to accept blame of any kind nor work on themselves to correct them to make their lives better and the lives of the people around them...........also better. Always blaming others is just an easy and lazy way to deal with life, imo.

None of his ROTC classes stuck with him. If those teachings had really been instilled in his core values he wouldn't have ever done the horrific murders he has done.

ROTC classes in high school are about teaching morals, respect, honor, ethics, patriotism, discipline, and strong leadership roles..... whether it is within one's own community or wherever they give back to their community/country in whatever role they choose. ROTC has nothing to do with firearms.

One of our grandson's was in ROTC. He won many top ROTC leadership awards both local, state, and national. During his junior and senior year he was the top Commander in charge of ROTC. Instead of going into the military he went to college and got his criminology degree. When he started college taking night courses he also started as a fulltime deputy with our local Sheriff's Department and made Sargent in a little over a year, and remains on the force today. This is how he decided to help serve and give back to his country by protecting and serving those in his own community.

I didn't ever think the suspect was Hispanic. His features just didn't line up with being a Hispanic. Many even commented here about that the first time we saw his photo. I don't think I recall any poster agreeing he looked like a Hispanic male. At least he was mistakenly called a Hispanic instead of being listed as a black suspect. If that had happened and it turned out to be wrong the citizens of Burlington may have had their own firestorm igniting the sky. At least that didn't happen and I know the Hispanic community must be upset but I don't think any of them will pour out in the streets of Burlington rioting...trying to terrorize the small city.

These background checks must not be very extensive to allow him to slip through with domestic violence/assault charges.

I think it's possible they said hispanic or NA based on the local demographics.
