These background checks must not be very extensive to allow him to slip through with domestic violence/assault charges.

When did he work on military base? I can't find any msm sources on that.

From this morning, I think:

I got a chance to peruse his Facebook page before it went down. He likes cars, guns, anime, and all things military. His step-father is extremely pro-gun and (sadly ironically) posted quite a bit about mass shootings and who should be blamed. It did strike me that he appeared a little bit military obsessed, but he never entered the military except for junior ROTC (which is just a high school club and isvery different from ROTC proper.) It looks like most of his family is military and he has one relative (step-sister possibly) who just made it into the Air Force Academy.

I bring this up because military-obsessed but rejected from the military seems to be a frequent theme in these sorts of events.

It is ironic. His step son wasn't supposed to have guns yet he managed to steal apparently more than one from his step father.

From what I understand of his Domestic Violence charges, he assaulted his stepfather a few times? I wonder what that is all about?

I read it on his, now deleted, FB profile
Job: Bagger at the Navy Commissary.
This located on the Naval Base on Whidbey Island.

Step father is lucky he is alive, he may have misdirected his anger from ste=father onto strangers at Macy's instead.

Most of the victims are female.

Maybe the step father was a difficult, anti-social person?
speculation, imo

Johnson said when the suspect was first arrested “we were all like, ‘We’re pretty sure that’s him,’ and ... it ended up being him.”

Johnson said they have had many disputes with the stepfather.
“Two years ago on the Fourth of July we were having a function with our friends and (the stepfather) set tires on fire in the backyard,” he said.

Cannot link to it now, but when perusing his fb last night, suspect posted an odd comment/question, something like.... do you like/what do you think of girls who wear makeup?
Wondered about that considering he targeted the females at the m/u counter.

imo, speculation.

From what has been reported, his ex-girlfriend used to work at Macy's. It doesn't sound like he had an easy time attracting women. I think it's the women he was angry at.

What is wrong in this world that it always seems to be the women these guys get angry at?!
imo, speculation.

The original reports from witnesses amid the chaos was "possibly Hispanic" then all night we were hearing "Hispanic male wearing gray sweatshirt last seen running towards I-5". There was a report of someone trying to break into a home nearby, helicopters, police dogs, we listened to the scanner for hours that night. As we know now, this wasn't him at all. He just got in his car and drove away. We have a huge and very diverse Hispanic population here - Central and South American - I can see why in a split second of gun shots and being scared that someone would say "possibly Hispanic" having glanced at the guy. It was once the photos were released that people realized he didn't look Hispanic.

My understanding is the fourth woman killed was the employee at the cosmetics counter. The man killed was trying to help his wife get up, she had fallen as they were running away.

This is a small mall and it is never "packed". Kids barely hang out there. Seriously, the only places ever to be even remotely crowded in the mall are Chuck E Cheese and the movie theater. They were both well populated being a Friday night. I have no idea what his motive was, but it doesn't seem to be killing as many people as possible.

I am so impressed with all of the law enforcement agencies that came together, coordinated information and worked so hard to get this guy identified and apprehended within 24 hours of the crime. They are awesome!!

I presume their logic goes something like that-Women wouldn't give them the time of day, but there can't be anything wrong with them, so something is wrong with the women.

I wonder if the stepfather set the tires on fire because they were having a party--or was it because it was a Fourth of July party?

And he didn't have fireworks?

I'm thinking along those lines as well. It seems like he targeted the make-up counter, which is odd.....

Thanks. Yes, it is an interesting article.

How sad for his parents. He has now made them victims too because they both will have to live the rest of their lives knowing what he did. His stepfather really seems to care about him and a lot of stepfathers and stepmothers do care deeply about their stepchildren. Many raising them and loving them as if they were their own bio child. His stepfather probably tried to instill in him to follow the rule of law and societal norms. Touching young females in forbidden areas is done by those who refuse to do so and feel entitled to do whatever they wish.

However, Cetin’s stepfather urged the judge not to impose a no-contact order, saying his stepson was “going through a hard time” and that he couldn’t help him with the order in place.

Others tried to help him too but he ruined that as well. He seems to be the type that bites the very hand that feeds him.

A couple years ago, Marty Baldwin said he allowed the suspected gunman, who was homeless at the time, to move in with him and his wife. But Baldwin kicked him out a few months later after learning the younger man was using and selling drugs, he said

This is why he didn't join the military and I doubt he did well in junior ROTC either. He had an aversion to structure, discipline, following orders from those in authority.

Powers said Cetin participated in a junior Reserve Officers Training Corps program and was interested in the military, but didn’t like the power structure or taking orders.
