You can't assume that Howard assumed anything. They probably just thought her portfolio was interesting, and gave the scholarship on that. If you ask them they will likely tell you exactly that.

I can only go by what has been reported.
"Dolezal attended college in Mississippi, then went on to Howard University on scholarship -- not having identified herself black then on her application, because there was no such option, though people there may have assumed as much "because her portfolio of art was all African-American portraiture," her mother said."

Her parents adopted a number of black children, which is where her interest in the culture seem to be coming from.

They were missionaries as well. But I doubt that them adopting black children is what sparked her interest, it was more likely the environment she grew up in which would have been conservative, religious and white. If you were rebelling against that society, you would choose to be not conservative, not religious and not white. Which is what she has apparently chosen to be.

Well if I read correctly she got a full scholarship because of being black so at least for that she can be accountable for?

I think it is more complicated than that. From what I understand, she never said to Howard University that she was black. What happened was that she applied to the school and sent photos of her paintings, which were all portraits of black subjects and she was accepted and given a scholarship. Supposedly, the school was surprised when they saw that she was a white girl, but she did not do anything illegal when she applied.

How would it be conservative, religious and white if she had a number of adopted black siblings?

I am not sure how conservative they were. They apparently lived in a teepee in Montana before Rachel was born.

Her older brother who is the published writer she references in that tryptich, has written a book and has this to say about his own background: 'back to the land parents, grew own food, read the Bible every night before dinner and burned with Pentecostal faith'.

The book is available on Amazon.

I have yet to find evidence that he lived in Colorado. I think that is an untrue story.

Another news station khq.com is reporting a leaked letter to Spokane NAACP members from "President Dolezal" stating they are postponing the NAACP meeting scheduled for tomorrow night and announcement of their decision whether to keep her on.

Sorry I'm having trouble linking from my iPad

Rachel Dolezal Postpones Monday Meeting and Statement on Ethnicity

Dolezal said in an emailed statement Sunday: “Due to the need to continue discussion with regional and national NAACP leaders, tomorrow’s meeting is postponed and will be rescheduled for a later date. We appreciate your patience and understanding at this time.”

It was the society she grew up in. That part of the US is not renown for tolerance, equality and secularism.

Did the rest of the town she grew up in live in teepees as well? You are missing the point I was making, which was the SOCIETY she grew up in.

Just to make the story even more interesting, apparently Rachel identifies as bisexual, as well.

Historically in Spokane, I’m in a very small minority of women presidents of the NAACP. I believe I’m the third or fourth female president since the Spokane NAACP’s inception.

I’d guess I’m also one of the youngest presidents. As a single mom who has lived on the poverty line and identifies as bisexual, perhaps some of my other demographics are also a first for Spokane. I know there is a strong majority of older straight men with strong church ties leading many of the branches nationally.

She also offered this related to her religious affiliation:

(Same source link.)

I’m a spiritual person, but not someone who belongs to any specific church in Spokane.

His memoir apparently describes his parents as politically conservative Christian fundamentalists. Their notion of back to earth extended to home births, making all of their own clothes, and yep, growing and picking those berries Rachel has mentioned.

He describes wanting to escape his family, that life, and his parents' religion. Interestingly enough, one reviewer of his memoir said the brother seemed intent to make himself sound , well, victimized, essentially.

And was she exaggerating how much she teaches for EWU?? They say she has only taught 2 adult ed evening classes between 2011 and 2014. And they released a statement that she is not a professor, but contract faculty on a quarterly as-needed basis.

Rachel: My roles include being a professor of Africana Studies at EWU.

One student asked me today in African history class, “What do you do for fun?” I told her that for me, my work is fun, everything I do has a purpose and is fulfilling.

I was looking forward to teaching early African American history in Jan Term, but I am going to cross that off my list.

Rachel: Yes. I’m still an educator, and I’ll have four classes at EWU in winter quarter, so I’ll be teaching plenty. I see being an educator as one body of work, but it will save time if I don’t have to juggle driving to two campuses. I’ll also be cutting back on my hair clients. Being an ethnic hair stylist is really a community service, as well as bread and butter for me. I can fall back on doing hair when I need to make an extra buck.

Doing hair is like a social outreach sometimes and many of my hair clients are my friends or younger girls I mentor. We get to know each other well, especially when I’m doing a six-to-eight-hour braid job. (She laughs.)

From her bio re Africana Studies program, at college where she teaches/taught.
Shows her degree is MFA but apparently has goals in other fields as well.

"Doležal also entertains an interest in the medical field and has begun pre-medical studies, working toward an MD and a residency in trauma surgery. She hopes to combine her medical knowledge with her passion for human rights and engage in life-saving surgery efforts around the world." bbm

What evidence is there that she's actually taking pre med classes? And is assuming she'll get an MD and be a resident? Is she getting free tuition at EWU for the classes? And she's a single mom and she works full-time? Right....

Look how many activities she seems to have in her bio! Not to mention a legal battle over whether her adoptive brother is really her son? This seems all to good to be true.

She has a masters of fine arts in experimental studio and sculpture from Howard University. If she wants to apply to medical schools, even as a "non-traditional admission", she has years of prerequisites to complete-- lots of math and science that fine arts degrees don't include.

IMO, this statement on her faculty bio was pure braggadocio/ wishful thinking, as a way to for her to add even another "notch" on her bio, and "one up" everyone else that is a mere mortal. This is a highly unrealistic plan for how her career has progressed and unfolded.

She didn't bother talking about the classes she DOES teach-- she chose to include this flaky fluff about medical school and trauma surgeon instead. That's just incredibly messed up, IMO.

Her brother/ son is now 21 years old. So there is no longer a need for any custody issues. She still considers him her son, and has referred to him as such in several interviews. Here again, she emphasized she is the mother of 2 BLACK sons. What mother describes their kids that way?? She feels she needs to keep on emphasizing their race. Can you imagine if we all did that?

This is important to me especially with regards to our children in schools and in the juvenile justice system. Because I am a mother of two black sons, ages 13 and 20, the role of education is a core focus for my work.

She gives too much information; every comment seems embellished - just like some other liars we've seen in court.

She appears to be what Juan Martinez calls a "florid liar". IMHO.

It's too close for her to claim copyright on the painting.

How do you know this, otto? i'm sincerely asking. I know more about copyright of dramatic and music rights and, often, nobody can tell whether a work is copyrightable until a judge or jury makes a ruling.

How would it be conservative, religious and white if she had a number of adopted black siblings?

There is a huge movement in conservative Christian circles to adopt kids from other countries such as Liberia and Ethiopia, and other places in Africa and Asia. Sometimes it's quite hard for these kids, who have different history and experiences, to blend into the family. A couple black kids adopted by these families have been beaten to death by parents trying to employ harsh corporal punishment methods based on total submission. http://m.motherjones.com/politics/2013/04/christian-evangelical-adoption-liberia

However, her parents seem like hippies to me. They lived in a teepee and seemed happy with their daughter's interest in civil rights, etc. Their statements indicate support for civil rights issues which has not historically been a domain of conservatives.

So, I'm not thinking she came from such a background. I could be wrong.

IIUC, US uni student apps do not ask for race info (unless perhaps, as a voluntary disclosure after admission).

From wiki info below, IIUC -
-scholarship-for-minorities orgs may lawfully ask for race info & make decisions based on that (and other factors?).
Maybe she did race-ID (said what?), if she got s'ship from one of these orgs, but seems unlikely to me, that one of these orgs would azz-ume her race-ID. Maybe it did, based on her art. IDK.

-orgs offering merit-based scholarships (and all the other categories listed) are not permitted by law to ask for race info.
Would a merit-based s'ship org azz-ume she was of a given race, if she did not provide race info to them? IDK.

W so many diff types of scholarships & without having info re specific scholarship org, imo, impossible to draw accurate conclusion about whether Ms D did disclose/ID race or what she stated.
JM2cts & could be all wrong.

"The most common scholarships may be classified as:
  • Merit-based: ...student's academic, artistic, athletic or other abilities....
  • Need-based: Some private need-based awards are confusingly called scholarships, and require the results of a FAFSA (the family's EFC).[SUP][citation needed][/SUP]
  • Student-specific: These are scholarships for which applicants must initially qualify based upon gender, race, religion, family and medical history, or many other student-specific factors. Minority scholarships are the most common awards in this category.[SUP][citation needed][/SUP] For example, students in Canada may qualify for a number of aboriginal scholarships, whether they study at home or abroad.[SUP][citation needed][/SUP] The Gates Millennium Scholars program is another minority scholarship funded by Bill and Melinda Gates for excellent African American, American Indian, Asian Pacific Islander American and Latino students who enroll in college.[SUP][4][/SUP]
  • Career-specific: ....
  • College-specific: ...The programs offered by the uniformed services of the United States... sometimes resemble such scholarships.

Cue the eerie music -----> Jody, Jody Arias, Jody.

Her long winded explanations (lies) also remind me of Jodi Arias.
