GUILTY WA - Delbert Belton, 88, beaten to death, Spokane, 21 Aug 2013

He says the victim may have fought back, which made matters worse.
Calls them two young men. Sorry, that's not the words I would use for these two.

QUOTE=Blondie in Spokane;9786918]Dewey you certainly saw this coming.....here you go:

"......and his family said he had "fallen in with the wrong crowd."

"He hung around with the wrong people and made the wrong choices," Odell Kinard said of his nephew, Kenan Adams-Kinard"

"It's the summer and ain't nothing to do here."

Blah blah blah....Yada, Yada, Yada......(I'd better not comment.....this whole statement is infuriating and the last sentence really pisses me off.) It's sickening to hear a family member encourage this disgusting mentality.[/QUOTE]

"It's the summer and ain't nothing to do here."

Okay, how many of you cringed when you read this?
I don't understand how an adult could say this. How about, as an ADULT, you encourage him to help around the house, volunteer, go to the library, go fishing, help younger kids learn to ride a bike or play ball, start a community garden, ask to help in a field he would like to work in, and on and on. And, btw, when you ask 'where are going? what are you doing today?' if the answer is 'nothing' or 'hanging out' then your response should be 'okay, do that here at home.' Jmho

BBM"He is a good boy. It's not really his fault"

"Two young men who's lives are ruined by criminal activity. One of them was a stand out basketball player and because no one cared, no one put their arms around them, he's now facing murder charges," said Spokane Police Chief Frank Straub.

Huh???? No, they are facing murder and robbery charges because they beat an elderly man to death and probably laughed about it plenty afterwards, or maybe even during!

The chief's comments are ridiculous. I am happy to say no chief of police around here would say something so silly, if they did they would KNOW they would lose the next election!

It sounds as if the Police Chief is being facetious. jmo

Bail has been set at $3 million for a 16-year-old boy arrested in the beating death of an 88-year-old World War II veteran.

Spokane County District Judge Debra Hayes on Tuesday also ordered Kenan Adams-Kinard moved from a juvenile jail to the Spokane County Jail. He will be tried as an adult and faces up to life in prison if convicted.

On Monday, bail was set at $2 million for another 16-year-old, Demetrius L. Glenn.
Both teens are charged in last week's beating death of Delbert Belton, who survived the Battle of Okinawa.

But Hayes says Adams-Kinard is more of a flight risk if he's released. The judge noted that Glenn turned himself in, while Adams-Kinard hid out for days before he was arrested early Monday.

Both teens face charges of first-degree murder and first-degree robbery.

SPOKANE, Wash.-- One of the teenagers accused of beating a World War II veteran to death is being held on $3 million bail. A Spokane judge set Kenan Adams-Kinard’s bail Tuesday afternoon.

In court, the suspect claimed that he and Demetrius Glenn met Delbert Belton to buy crack. Police said they have no evidence to support such a claim. Investigators called the claim “ridiculous.”

“Shorty never did no drugs,” said Ted Denison, a friend who added that the defendants were “smearing his name.”

The drug-dealing claim is in a letter police found after they arrested Kenan Adams-Kinard early Monday morning, Spokane County Deputy Prosecutor Larry Haskell said during Tuesday’s court hearing.

Haskell said the letter contends that Adams-Kinard and Demetrius L. Glenn, 16, were buying crack cocaine from Belton when the attack occurred Aug. 21. That notion was scoffed at by family members and friends of Belton, who was known as Shorty because he was little more than 5 feet tall.

Haskell did not return several telephone calls seeking additional information on the drug-dealing claim.

Common for the media to report whatever snippets from a nearly 17 minute PC they decide fit their agenda. To understand that one portion of the statement, one would need to watch the entire PC.

Straub is a city employee, not an elected official, which of course leaves him open to firing for suggesting perhaps both family units and community need to take responsibility for our youth, and his background prior to the City of Spokane hiring him shows why he feels that way.

I may not care for the term "young men" either, but his job is to remain respectful even when it might not suit his personal tastes. Plenty enough LE haters in Spokane who believe they are all a bunch of trigger happy thugs. Coming across as "I'd like to throw them against a cement wall" does nothing to help their image, nor keep civil discourse on the table.

MOO

That police chief also claimed victim made it worse by fighting back. He should quit talking while he is ahead.
:banghead::banghead::banghead:
But if it's any consolation, I am sure the suspects will get lots of hugs in prison.

If part of his job is to be respectful of teenaged thugs who beat to death an elderly veteran in a parking lot with big flashlights, and he chooses to do that job by being "respectful" to those thugs, than I have ZERO respect for him or his "employer." jmo

eta: he has 30 years of law enforcement and is from White Plains NY where the Brawley debacle happened. He's talking about how the perp's families are ruined and how the "basketball player" youth's life was ruined. Talk amongst yourselves. Disgusting, imo.

omg, seriously??? So they were going to buy crack from an elderly vet at an Eagle Lodge rather than from their own peers. New lows. Not surprising. Watch the msm run with it. jmo

They expect to find crack cocaine?????????????

Wow. They (the suspects) are just continuing to disrespect Mr. Belton. It isnt enough that he is dead-they are going to try and kill him again with nonsense.

They're going to get LWOP at this rate. Smearing the victim - never a good idea, and especially not when he's a WWII vet.

Watching the entire press conference made it MUCH WORSE! That snippet wasn't taken out of context, in fact half of his 15 minute diatribe was about how these young men are the "vulernable ones" and basically portraying them as the victims here AND laying the blame on the whole community.

Whole community of course meaning all of the people like you and me that had NOTHING to do with any of this. It is really our fault, because we don't have enough midnight basketball programs yet!

Disgusting doesn't even begin to describe his PC. The fact that many of the folks in that state will lap that PC gibberish up and nod their heads and see these murderous little thugs as the "poor victims" makes it even more disgusting.

I guess what he is trying to say is we as a "community" need to reach out more to these thugs and give them hugs and if they happen to pull a flashlight out and bash your face in well....don't judge....realize they are the real victims and it is really your fault for failing them as a community.
