The human remains remained unidentified until a bone fragment was sent to the California Department of Justice's Bureau of Forensic Services, the sheriff’s office said.

The agency extracted DNA from the fragment and identified the decedent in June 2023 as Dennis Earl Seger, the sheriff’s office said. Seger lived in Washington and was reported missing by his family members to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Seger left on Sept. 10, 1986 to drive from Seattle to Los Angeles, according to the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System. Seger’s vehicle, a green 1976 Ford Torino, was found on Dec. 30, 1986 in the Barstow area. The vehicle was then impounded.

Seger’s family members provided DNA to Los Angeles police to help identify his remains. Police found there was no evidence that showed Seger died from foul play.

That's quite a ways from the Interstate. He was on top of a blanket and had a tote bag next to him. I wonder what he was doing out there. Rest peacefully now Dennis.
