WA - James Wamsley for rape of infant, Benton County, 2007

I am confused, If he raped a 9 month baby, how would there be no medical issues. Not disagreeing with you just confused now.

He meant no more trips to the hospital. Wounds that are healing do not always require additional trips to a doctor/hospital to complete that process. It was my understanding that "medical issues" meant "physician intervention."

The sexual urge in teenage boys is a VERY powerful thing. I am not making excuses for this boy, but I do take that into consideration when thinking about what might have happened. Many of our most terrible crimes are committed to fulfill an overwhelming sexual desire. Sad but true. You just can't underestimate how all-encompassing that drive can be....mixed with immaturity, poor impulse control, opportunity, curiosity...DISASTER.

Again - not to be too graphic or offensive - my thoughts are that the teenager was overcome with this desire. It doesn't take the average teenage boy very long to complete a sexual act. I don't think it would take full penetration the way you and I would think of full penetration for the act to get completed, but because the object of he's using is so little, any penetration is very harmful.

While the sexual urges of a 17 year old may be very powerful, WHY would he be turned on by a 9 month old BABY BOY? What the hell??? Who could possibly be turned on by the sight of a helpless baby? For God's sake, take Rosie and her 5 sisters into the bathroom! I think he did it because he thought he'd get away with it, after all, a 9 month old can't tell!

That excuse doesn't fly, as a matter of fact, there's no excuse. I'm not going off on you SCM, not at all. I'm just SO freaking sick and tired of hearing excuses being made for these animals.

Oh so and so may have been abused themselves, well you know what? WHO FREAKING CARES!!! I sure as hell don't! Them being abused themselves in no way, shape or form gives them a right or a reason to inflict that on a helpless child. Ever heard of empathy? Or do unto others as you would have done unto you?

I'm so sick of the Boo freaking hoo excuses some of these pervs come up with, I can't see straight.

And I, for one, DO blame the mother. There was absolutely no reason to leave 2 small children with a 17 year old for 9 hours. NONE! Especailly to go to a family BBQ. I wouldn't be surprised if Indy's right one bit and she dropped her kids off to anyone who would take them.

If my child isn't welcome somewhere, then I don't go!

Sorry to get on the soap box but I'm really sick and tired of these perverts and thier slap on the wrist they get. I just got done looking at the sex offender list for WV and WHAT IS WRONG WITH OUR SYSTEM?

Probation? Suspended sentences? For full grown men RAPING children!!! What the hell??? NOT ONE of them had served more than 3 years! WHY???? A couple of them were repeat offenders too and hadn't served more than 5 years!!! I just don't understand!

Heya Indy, how's the rat?

My hubby warns everyone not to get me going on discussing child molestors. I get very upset. It's just something that I can't wrap my head around at all.

I know one thing, those pervs are damn lucky I'm not a judge.

There was a movie, I think it was "American Pie", where the teenager was on the kitchen counter on top of an apple pie. There is no denying that the urge is tremendous in teenagers, both male and female. Their bodies are houses of raging hormones, and the movie industry has made millions on this fact with images of not so unlikely scenarios.

But the problem with this particular teenager is not that he decided to insert his penis in an odd place. The problem is that he didn't mind that what he was doing was inflicting severe pain on a defenseless infant.

Some might view what he did as a crime of opportunity, but the thing is he also had the opportunity to stop the process at any time. He chose to ignore the screams of an infant. He chose to ignore the idea of possible consequences. There was a series of choices that he made. He didn't fall on the baby and accidentally penetrate him. More than likely there was planning involved, however brief. Planning that included isolating he and the infant. Planning that involved positioning the baby. Planning that involved attempting to hide the aftermath. Planning that involved his best effort to insure that the only eyewitness who could tell on him, was not in the immediate vicinity. There is a difference between having an opportunity, and creating one.

Yeah, me too. I'm on my second Bullie. We had the first for 16 years and had to put her down on my birthday!

Children and animals, the ones that count on us most for protection.

I asked a couple of my guy friends about that apple pie scene since they both thought it was the funniest part of the movie.

More than an opporunity, it is said that an apple pie, especially a warm apple pie is the closest thing to a woman! LOL

When they told me that I was like "WHAT!?!?!"

Who in the world made that comparison? LOL!!!!!

I don't take it personally, Lurker! ;) I respect your opinions and understand your frustrations. They are my own.:blowkiss:

It's just different perceptions. I am very interested in understanding why we men (and women) do the terrible (and wonderful) things that we do. I feel very connected to my fellow human beings - even the "worst" of us - and I grow through developing an understanding of them.

Whether we "get" it or not, we know that some people are sexually aroused by children. We also know that some people will sexually abuse children more situationally - because they have the opportunity and desire and don't care who gets hurt. In my opinion, the more we understand these phenomena, the better armed we are to protect our children.

I also care deeply that abusers are - with extremely rare exception - victims of abuse. It is a chain of pain and that's an important thing to look at, IMHO. I feel compassion for anyone and everyone who has been a victim of abuse. I don't stop feeling that compassion when a victim of abuse becomes an offender. I don't feel like the chain of pain comes any closer to being broken by my withholding compassion from abuse victims.

To me - understanding does not equal excuses. There are no "excuses" in harming other human beings, but we do it because we are selfish and flawed.

We must all pay the consequences associated with our choices and actions. Being a believer in the law of karma, I feel like that happens regardless of my empathy-level for someone who behaves criminally. The 17-year-old boy in this case will pay the price for his actions. Of that, I feel certain.

I am a believer in fair sentences and people who harm being jailed away from the public. We still have problems in our judicial system (as can be seen in the WV list), to be certain, but I have faith in it as a whole. I think - today more than ever - abuse of children is in the forefront of the public mind and eye. That gives me a lot of hope.

And - as I stated earlier - I could never throw stones at the mother with so little information. I assume the best of people until I'm proven wrong because that's an attitude that continually serves me well in life.

IMO this crime wasn't committed as a sexual outlet for a 17 yr old over hormonal teen....it was a vicious crime of control and torture. That punk knew he was going to hurt the baby, he knew.......... he just the same, didn't care.

Great post! And I see your point, I meant my post (or tirade) as more of them making excuses and getting lighter punishments. THAT, I don't agree with.

It's more of the philosphy that some have on "oh, he's a 17 year old boy that was probably abused so he shouldn't be punished" that gets me.

The SO website really got my blood boiling. One man got a 2 year suspended sentence with NO probabtion for molesting his 2 year old daughter. WHAT? The leniancy just blows me away.

My father died a slow painful death that took over 3 years. He was a diabetic that lost both legs below the knee and had to undergo kidney dialysis. It was a long, slow death and extremely hard to watch. He passed after his heart stopped during dialysis and we took him off life support after 3 days. I asked my Mom why God would take someone like my Father who was so good when there were so many worthless human beings on the planet. Her answer was simple, she said "Because God doesn't want them."
I still didn't fully agree with her answer due to the suffering my Dad went through but it made sense. My Dad was once kicked off a jury during selection because it was a child molestor case. They asked him if he agreed with molestors being molested themselves and repeated the cycle.

Needless to say, I probably wouldn't make a jury in a case like that either.

I'm so sorry to hear about your Dad. I know that must have been painful to watch.

Please know that I in no way think someone should get a lesser jail sentence because they were molested, but I also understand that it is a defense attorney's JOB to argue that point to help their client. And I respect that.

We have to keep working to keep these issues in the public eye and to demand stricter sentences. It takes a long time to change things, but I think everyone on this site helps to do this.

Those were really insightful thoughts Southcitymom. Lots of balance and compassion. I lack that at times, so your post was definitely a valid view worth my consideration. Philamena, I am not quick to assign his behavior to some unfortunate incidences he himself may have experienced in his life. But I am also not quick to see this crime as a deliberate act of control and torture. Leaving a 17 year old male, who does not have a moral compass, anywhere unsupervised for 9 hours will have varying results. In this particular case the mom left her children with an individual in this category, and assigned to him the task of being responsible for all the diaper changing and trips to the potty with her 3 year old little girl. This teenager made some horrible choices. So did the mom.
