Family of missing pregnant woman plans search for area where phone last pinged

Sept 18, 2020

TACOMA, Wash. - It’s been over three weeks since a pregnant Parkland woman seemingly vanished the day before her first ultrasound, setting off a massive search for her that her family is working to keep alive. Kassanndra Cantrell’s loved ones are planning another search at Point Defiance Park in Tacoma this Saturday, hoping they’ll find something-anything, to help bring her home.

From day one of the investigation, Kassanndra Cantrell’s family has really only had two pieces of solid information: her car was captured leaving her Parkland neighborhood around 8:30 am on Tuesday August 25th, and about four hours later her phone pinged for the last time near Point Defiance Park in Tacoma. That’s when the trail seemingly ends, and where her loved ones plan to search Saturday, going to businesses in the area and asking them to check surveillance video. “We need to see if they have anything that might show my daughter in the area,” says Marie Smith.

[..]

Detectives are also still searching for evidence around the clock. They say they’re still waiting on lab results from a search done 18 days ago at the home of an ex-boyfriend Kassanndra dated over a decade ago. as the days continues to go by, the pain her family feels only deepens.

Okay I get some good points here, the phone was found on the island though. So, if she wasn't seen on the ferry how did the phone get there? Whoever put it there, had to take the ferry regardless. Unless, they are a person with a boat that would be the only other way. Also, is there two ferry's? I see one on each side. Either way, someone brought the phone there.
I don't think she's on Vashon Island.

My guess is she met him a) somewhere halfway between their homes, maybe Wapato Park where one of the a searches was conducted just after her disappearance. (However we don't have confirmation that search was related to this case.) b) at ex-BF's place.

Violence occurred (although hope this is not the case).

Then maybe off to Point Defiance Park in her car, disposal of body, shut off/disposal of phone. On the way back to his home, he leaves the car/with keys inside in a less than desirable area and either walks/runs/Uber's/gets a ride to wherever.

Vashon Island, as others have noted, requires a ferry ride to get over there, there are many cameras and the schedule runs roughly every 50min. They have live cameras so people can see how long the lines are.

WSDOT - Ferries - Schedule: Sailing Schedule for Pt Defiance / Tahlequah

WSDOT - Ferries - Cameras

PDP on the other hand, has many places (cup handles) to pull over and see the view. There are many areas along 5-mile drive where there are cliffs and thick vegetation. Also this area was searched by LE after her disappearance.

If I have time tomorrow, I can zip down to 25th and the 705 underpass (where the car was found) and see if I can spot any cameras. I suspect with the light-rail stop, gas station/car wash and plenty of business at the preceding intersections there's bound to be footage.

IMO

I don’t believe the actual phone has been found, the phone pinged in range of the island. Moo

Okay I see, thanks for that information. Even though no physical phone was found, I feel that still doesn't change anything imo. The phone pinging on the island means, for a fact, she was there at one point or someone brought the phone there. There has to be footage either way if another sleuther is saying there's continuous camera footage of the ferries.

I’m gonna guess the FBI and TPD probably covered that angle with security footage in many areas, including the ferry. Probably why the search was focused at the park itself and not on Vashon. Again, anyone with their phone on in that area of Tacoma will show a ping to that tower.

Okay, so I want to get my facts right. You said Tacoma. So, the 200,000+ people that live in Tacoma (62.42 mi²) who have a cell phone in ANY area, all ping in to that one tower on that island. Why wouldn't her phone ping to a closer tower on the mainland unless she was on the island? What would be the point of mentioning this ping in the investigation if you're telling me 200k+ people's cell phones all ping to that island's tower.

Editing to add: I see you said part of tacoma but either way, i'm still asking and the island isn't even a part of Tacoma. Also, where has the FBI been mentioned.

Thank you for keeping her media thread updated - where can she be?

LE’s access to pings are probably more specific but I know for a fact that you can be in Tacoma and ping on Vashon. Not terribly unusual.

Please see the media thread linked above to become familiar with all the facts as reported to date.

Also, it would not be unusual for my phone to ping off of VI tower while my phone located at Sea-Tac airport if that tower was last handshake.

The two towers

I sense a little hostility. Tacoma is surrounded by many islands, vast forests, many towns, cities, not to mention rivers, lakes, etc etc. That’s what makes Washington so unique. The point is, in one of the articles in the media thread, the investigation said the ping was within a mile or 2 radius, and because of the location of the tower, and the said radius, point defiance park made the most sense. If you’d like to look on a map you can see why or how being on that end of Tacoma could easily ping to a tower on Vashon.

No hostility here, sorry you feel that way or I upset you. These were all questions to just get plain information, nothing personal. :)

I believe the southern tip of Vashon is 1.7 miles across the sound to Point Defiance.

Sometimes there are pings out in the middle of the bay between Vashon, Point defiance, and Dash Point. I nearly always see them listed as coming from Dash Point even though the call is in the northern area of Tacoma (not at the northern tip).

LE probably has better access to tracking than what shows up on Verizon but those supposed pings normally happen early in the morning when the phone is nowhere near that area.

Using Verizon, it’s been my experience that the pings they show us as customers are not always terribly accurate, especially on the outskirts of the city.

And as far as her phone, they could’ve smashed it to bits and thrown it away anywhere, not necessarily close to where she may have been injured or murdered. If it were me, I would turn it off and then destroy it at some random place where it wouldn’t likely be found.

But they don’t need the phone to get tons of information from it. It may be taking them a while to get a warrant, especially if she had her own account.

I just hope they’re not so swamped with all of the civil unrest to put things like this on the back burner, and that they are quietly gathering evidence.

Just an FYI on phone pings.

My boss lives in Sidney By The Sea on Victoria Island, British Columbia.

Every month he has to scour his cell phone bill because he gets charged periodically for long distance (international) calls because his phone will be directed to towers in Washington State. Specifically, Bellingham.

Just because you are close to a tower doesn't automatically mean that your phone will ping off that tower. Sometimes the signals get rerouted.

"Utilizing GPS data obtained from Cantrell’s ex-boyfriend’s truck, this morning our detectives conducted a detailed ground search of the areas along Chambers Creek Road W. in University Place," said Pierce County Det. Ed Troyer. "At approximately 2:00 p.m. our detectives found a set of human remains that were wrapped and disposed of over a steep hillside along Chambers Creek. Search & Rescue Team members from our department and the Tacoma Police Department performed a high-angle ropes operation to recover the remains, which were identified at the scene as Kassanndra Cantrell."

"Following today’s discovery, members of our SWAT Team arrested Cantrell’s 37-year-old ex-boyfriend at his residence in the City of Tacoma. He will be booked into the Pierce County Jail on murder charges."
