Search for attempted rapist, robber

TACOMA, Wash. – A reward is out for a man suspected of robbing and threatening to rape two women in Tacoma.

Police are looking for 53-year-old Earl Lee Sherrod. Detectives say surveillance video from June 8 at 11:05 p.m. shows Sherrod approaching a woman who was walking to her car at the Pierce County Transit Center near the Tacoma Dome.

The woman was followed to her car by a man and threatened at knifepoint. She told police that the man told her she was going to be raped. She was able to get away and the attacker fled.

The second incident happened July 13 when a woman was riding in an elevator at the Cedar Medical Clinic in Tacoma. Police say Sherrod got in, blocked the woman from the elevator buttons, pulled out a knife and told the woman he was going to rape her.

Earl Lee Sherrod is described as black, 5-feet 11-inches tall, 160 pounds with black hair, brown eyes and sometimes wears glasses. He is known to hang out around the Tacoma Dome, downtown Tacoma and the Hilltop neighborhood.

A $1,000 reward is being offered by Tacoma-Pierce County Crime Stoppers for information leading to the arrest and charges filed against Sherrod. Callers to (253) 591-5959 will remain anonymous.

OK. I need a rant thread here. The father asking the kidnapper to release an "unharmed Lindsey" is unrealistic. 1) If she's been kidnapped, she's already harmed. 2) Obviously, a kidnapper would mean harm to her.

:waitasec:
I think what they are trying to emphasize is there is no need to kill her. They want to appeal to anyone who may have her that they can just let her go instead. They are playing to the perp's conscience in case he is debating on a course of action at this point.

Police issued a warrant Thursday for the arrest of a man in connection with two women who were robbed in Tacoma.

Police released surveillance video on Wednesday of a woman who was stalked and robbed by a man in an incident in June. Police said he struck again on Monday.

According to court documents, police have identified the suspect as Earl Lee Sherrod.

Surveillance video shows a man rob a woman, and then attempt to abduct and sexually assault her at knifepoint, said Detective Larry Andren of the Tacoma Police Department. The woman was walking to her car in the Pierce Transit Center near the Tacoma Dome shortly after 11 p.m. on June 8.

Tacoma police said the same man tried the same thing at the Cedar Street Medical Center on Monday afternoon; cornering a woman alone in an elevator and threatening her at knifepoint.

During the investigation, police determined that Sherrod could be a potential suspect. They added his photo to a montage of others and both women identified Sherrod as her attacker.

Sherrod is not yet under arrest.

FYI: There are a few new articles posted today in Today's Current News Thread for all of you!

Here is a snip from one:
Investigators have been following tips and leads, he said, while also searching hundreds of Web sites that might provide a clue on Lindsey’s disappearance.

“The volume of information we have to work with is huge to say the least,” Scott said. “We’re just trying to pore through that to find the piece that’s going to bring Lindsey home.”

Scott Baum briefly discussed his plans to return to Tennessee soon, saying he still faces a possible deployment to Iraq, but may be able to remain in the country while the search continues. Members of his unit and other National Guard members have contacted him to offer support.

Either way, he said he must return to Tennessee to deal with personal responsibilities and affairs. He said he will still be available to investigators to offer any help he can.

Since the article addresses the Amber Alert from both MB and Scott...I thought I would mention the thread we have here about revising it.:

Marc Klaas Calls For An Amber Alert Revision - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community

Both the parents and investigators expressed frustration Wednesday that Lindsey had not qualified for an Amber Alert notice when she first went missing. The alert usually requires some sort of suspect or vehicle description, which authorities did not have.

Melissa Baum said the system could have still been used to broadcast Lindsey’s photo and contact information in the first vital hours of her disappearance. She hopes changes can be made to allow for more flexibility in the system, which rapidly distributes missing child information to media and law enforcement throughout the area.

“I definitely think that there need to be some changes,” she said. “The guidelines that the state has are too strict.”

Scott said authorities had to figure out their own sort of public notice, spending a lot of time making calls and distributing information throughout the region. He shares the family’s frustration of not knowing whether an Amber Alert would have made a difference in finding Lindsey.

“In the future, I don’t want to have to wonder,” he said.

Any POI or interesting leads that I should be sleuthing? I have not been on much the last couple of days. Lindsey is always in my thoughts and prayers every day - she needs to come home now.

Where did the dogs lose LB's scent? Was it between 5th and 6th on Maple? Isn't this where the neighbor saw her at 9:15pm?

Hey Dots!

If I remember correctly, it was never confirmed by LE that LB's scent was ever picked up by the dogs. Someone mentioned it was lost on one of the streets off of Maple but LE never confirmed that.

I find it hard to believe that no scent was picked up. I think LE is just keeping that one close to the vest.

Police: Is Tumwater child-luring linked to McCleary girl's case?

Police are investigating whether the attempted abduction of a girl in Tumwater on Wednesday is linked to last month's highly publicized disappearance of 11-year-old Lindsey Baum in McCleary.

Officials say three men tried to kidnap the 14-year-old girl in broad daylight on Wednesday as she was walking along a busy street, but the girl was able to escape by running away.

The close call left the girl very shaken, and now detectives are comparing the similarities between her experience and Lindsey Baum's unexplained disappearance June 26 in McCleary, about 13 miles away.

"We investigate because child lurings aren't as common as most crimes, and when you have two communities that are so close together and the circumstances where obviously it occurred in public areas. And the girls are approximately the same age," says Detective Jen Kolb of the Tumwater Police Department.

The girl now says she believes the men wanted to hurt her.

"In a way, yeah. ... Just the way they were talking to me and trying to come to me," she says.

Kolb said she finds the case "very disturbing" and is struck by the parallels to the disappearance of Lindsey Baum.

A 14-year-old girl has reported an attempted luring to Tumwater police that occurred while she was walking in the area of Capitol Boulevard and Dennis Street Wednesday around 4:30 p.m.

She said that while she was walking, a pickup carrying three men pulled over, and two of them got out and approached her. One of the males called out to her “hey pretty lady,” and when she saw that the two males were following her she ran away, she said.

She said the men briefly chased her before getting back in their truck and leaving.

The truck is described as an older, lowered, small black truck with tinted windows and stickers on the tailgate. The girl did not get a good look at the driver, but she described the two men who chased her as white males, between 18 and 19, between five-eight and five-eleven, medium build, wearing baseball caps on sideways. Both were wearing large plain white t-shirts and baggy blue jeans.

These are disturbing reports because these communities are so close and more than one person seems to be involved in the luring. Could this be some sort of criminal gathering of children for some child sex ring?
Tumwater is about 20 miles from McCleary
Olympia is is even closer.
Can this be coincidence? "Three" incidents within 20 miles!!

The Tumwater/Olympia attempted-abduction stories were just one incident. (Note the address of where it happened in both articles.)

I think maybe what happened was the attempted abduction happened in Olympia, but she reported it to the Tumwater police.

My apologies, the headlines in blue are misleading, good job picking that up. The alarm remains, imo, clearly groups of young males are running about attempting to pick up girls close to Lindsey's age and extremely close to McCleary, a very brazen act considering that these individuals were probably not unaware about police interest in such activities.

Capitol Blvd and Dennis St. are also similar to proximity to major through routes, Interstate 5 and Old Highway 99 from what I can see in GE. It seems to be the sort of place like McCleary where highways and throughfares are right smack in the area of incident.

Hi. I haven't posted on this thread, but have been reading all along. Somehow I'm still curious about the woman with initials ML who said she helped Lindsey file an abuse complaint. Do we know anything more about that, or have I missed it?

 • #416
I've been off the thread for a few hours or so...and am getting a bit confused.

Normcar, why are these particular property owners significant? I'm sure that I have just missed something or am having trouble catching up with you guys since I've been gone for a bit. Just hoping that you can clear that up for me, please.

eyes4crime, very good point. I can't begin to imagine what it's like to live a day in the life of a missing child's mother....don't know if I would have even been able to get it together enough to dial 911 to get the police to begin with. Didn't mean anything bad about the mom......just trying to make sense out of nonsense. By "nonsense" I'm referring to the fact that we haven't found this little girl yet and I know that people don't just vanish....there has to be some explanation. There has to be SOMETHING that has been overlooked.....and it's driving me NUTS that we don't know what it is.
ETA: Thanks for the compliments on my baby....I'll have to give him an extra treat before bed cause he's been a popular lil' guy today! Of course if one dog gets a treat, then they BOTH get treats....can't hurt anyone's feelings, lol. Haven't ever had anything but "pound puppies" and "rescue critters" so I don't know much about full breeds.....but I have noticed that he does require a little bit more grooming attention that Willie (ear cleaning, for example, is a DAILY thing for Joe....but more of a monthly thing for Willie). Would love any advice/experiences you'd like to share about having Cockers (via PM or in appropriate forum, of course)! Thanks again!!

Hi, thanks for the question. What TripleA said a few posts down explains part of it well. I will reiterate that this area is the location where Lindsey appears to have dropped from visibility so it's like the point of impact in a bombing. To me it needs to be combed over and over, imo, in order to either dismiss or create ideas, leads, etc. Anything and everything relative to that area should be addressed, imo, within the law, of course.

Did I ask something wrong? Back to reading; no more posting here for me.

Wonder if they stopped at the local shell station for gas? Maybe that truck is on the surveillance video.

Now wouldn't that be an amazing coincidence, the shell station is only a few blocks south on old highway 99 so it certainly wouldn't be a stretch. Great idea Momtective. I hope LE has considered that:clap:

Absolutely not, I thought it was an excellent question and was waiting for some response from others. I have read and seen the initials ML but don't know anything about her/him so I can't help on that one.
