That isn't that far from Ft. Lewis. If it was shot down, it was for a good reason.

If it was a stolen plane there was every good reason to shoot it down, however close it was to anything. It is not like joyriding in cars.

Yeah, I assume they'll shoot down any stolen plane now, but there is a difference between over the Cascades and near a major military installation. I doubt they would have let him try to land it. Apparently ATC was trying to get him to keep it over the water.

Local media citing sources at Joint Base Lewis–McChord (JBLM) air force base said one or more F-15 fighter planes contacted the rogue aircraft and it crashed soon afterwards. The plane involved was a Horizon Air Q400 with no passengers on board, tweeted Alaskan Airlines.
