WA WA - Marizela Perez, 18, UW student, Seattle, 5 March 2011

Idunno, seems a bit far-fetched to me.

As a recent graduate of the University of Washington, I saw Marizela's photo every day, posted at the entrance to most of the major buildings on campus. It breaks my heart to know that she has never been found.

Bumping for her.
Off-topic, but your wording has brought to mind a question. You say that it breaks your heart to know "that she has never been found." I tend to associate the phrase "never been found" to people who have been missing for long periods of time, typically at least several years, if not decades. For a case like this one, I'd be more inclined to say that she's "still missing" or "hasn't been found yet."

Just my opinion, but it doesn’t seem odd to me. She has been gone for an extended period of time now.

I'm sorry, what was the question?

My question is this:

If she was going to meet friends on campus to study, why would she purchase such items? It seems like if she needed to pick up a few household items she would do it on her way home instead of having to carry them around in her backpack all day. Of course it’s no biggie to carry around a couple of pill bottles, but packages of garbage bags can often be quite heavy.

I would also like to know if she took sleeping pills on a regular basis or was this purchase out-of-the-ordinary for her? I hope she’s okay but I have a bad feeling after hearing the items she purchased before disappearing.

A couple of things to note here: Firstly, it seems that from the beginning of this case, perhaps the family/LE had some inclination that she may have voluntarily harmed herself and didn't want to put out any info. that would indicate this, thereby inhibiting an otherwise robust volunteer search effort. Unfortunately, it still seems that not much has been forthcoming, such as the above question re: any habit of sleeing pills, etc. This is certainly unfortunate, since the situation of inhibiting searching wouldn't really apply now -any info. that could possibly lead to actual leads or even ideas I would think would be beneficial.

Secondly, this case has always made me wonder, to no avail: How many suicides take place where the body isn't found for some time, or where the person obviously made an attempt to hide it? It certainly does seem to be a likely possibility that MP did harm herself (and that her family does, indeed, consider it a good possibiliy), but why no body????

Any thoughts?

Here is Marizela:

Here is the sketch of a body found:

Hmmm... I wonder if the hair in the sketch is correct- looks long. Marizela's was shorter and tapered in the back.

I still think of Marizela often and still see her flyers around town.

I don't think they ever stated if there was hair found with the remains. I'm leaning more towards this being someone who is partially Native American, but didn't want to leave out the possibility that it could be Marizela, you never know.

The face in the sketch is definitely the wrong shape, but - I have seen some sketches turn out to look absolutely nothing like the person it was supposed to be.

So I guess we'll have to wait for an official ID. Meanwhile, wishing peace for this 'Jane Doe' and her loved ones. At least one family will have answers soon. :sigh:

The Search for Marizela: A Thanksgiving note

On March 5, my 18-year-old cousin disappeared from her University of Washington campus in Seattle. Marizela Perez—5-foot-5, 110 pounds, short black hair with brown/red highlights and bangs cut into an asymmetrical bob, wearing a dark hooded jacket, jeans and light brown suede boots—was last seen at a Safeway grocery that fateful Saturday afternoon.

Marizela walked out the door and up Brooklyn Ave., and hasn’t been seen or heard from since.

Civil War historian Drew Gilpin Faust once described the “aching hearts” of families of the missing “in which the dread void of uncertainty” remains. In the first days and weeks after Marizela went missing, this feeling completely engulfed her parents, relatives and friends near and far.

How to express the inexpressible?

You try to breathe, but all that fills your lungs is that smoky, stifling uncertainty.

You try to eat, but all you can taste is indigestible fear.

You try to sleep, but all that comes is fathomless fatigue.

Your heart is weighted with grief, but your soul refuses to mourn.

You cling to hope and faith, tie a knot at the ends, and hang on with raw, blistered desperation.

Whoever said “time heals all wounds” has only known superficial hurt. Sharp pangs of panic have metastasized into deep anguish over the past eight months. There have been no investigative leads. No witnesses have come forward. To the police department, as is the case with so many others like her, Marizela is just another bureaucratic burden.

In fact, for five full months, the Seattle police shockingly violated state code requiring law enforcement agencies to submit her DNA information and dental X-rays to the Washington State Patrol within 30 days of her disappearance. After raising a ruckus, we were informed in late October that this legally mandated task was assigned to a “light duty” officer (never identified) who let it slip through the cracks. No one was held accountable for this negligence.

Just saw a post in the unidentified forum about human remains found in the Eastlake neighborhood this past Saturday.

WA WA - Seattle, Human remains found in Eastlake neighborhood, 12/10/11 - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community

Looking on the map, the 3100 block of Fairview East is south and just a bit west of the neighborhood where Marizela was seen at the Safeway, and where her school is. Perhaps there is a chance this is her?

Just figured I would give a heads up to all who followed Marizela. Wishing peace for the loved ones of the unidentified who was found.

I know this area very well, I work and live less than a mile away. The wooded area they are talking about is just a small strip of land with some trees and brush that is underneath the bridge, it is less than ½ a block long. It isn’t hidden, the trees aren’t dense and the brush isn’t tall. There is a big intersection a few feet away and busy streets run on either side of it. I have actually cut through there to get from Fairview to the bus stop on Harvard. I have seen homeless people camped out there from time to time, but it isn’t one of the larger homeless camps in the area, just a few people here and there.

While anything is possible, it’s hard to believe the remains were there for a long period of time without being discovered, it is a busy area surrounded by stores, restaurants, houses and it is a very popular area for running and biking. One of the articles suggests the remains may have been thrown from the bridge but I doubt that. The bridge is very high, if someone were traveling over it and threw the bags from their moving vehicle, they wouldn’t land directly under the bridge and they probably wouldn’t land so close together. They could possibly land there if someone stopped and threw them over the ledge, but that would be taking a huge risk of being seen by someone and it would be a very strange location to pick. Why not dump them in the water, just a few feet away?

Thanks for the details of the area, Sassy. You're right, this makes it less likely that it could be Marizela, for I imagine her remains would have had to have been there for many months without being seen, which is unlikely from what you describe.

Reading one of the newer articles on KING5, which is a bit longer, I guess LE says they had a similar case at a recycling plant earlier this year. Scary to think these remains could be related, possibly part of something bigger. :(

Sassy, any local tv or print news on the remains found under the bridge? I've been unable to find anything online. Thanks. :)

 • #117
No, not a beep, I’ve been checking everyday. Just like with the body found at the recycling plant, they reported about it for approx. 2 days and never said a word again. Very strange.

I haven't followed this closely and may have missed important info, but I'm wondering if Ravenna and Cowen Parks (north of the U District) have been thoroughly searched? Those of you from Seattle will probably agree with me that this should be a no-brainer but I haven't heard that this happened. These are easy walking distance from the Safeway where Marizela made her purchases, and fairly heavily wooded with lots of natural plant growth, which in this area can be very thick and concealing.

Michelle Malkin mentions that Marizela left Safeway and headed "up" Brooklyn Avenue. To me this implies heading north, which would be straight toward Cowen Park.

Poor girl. This seems to be a very sad story.

Those were two of the places they searched first. She was last seen leaving the Safeway on Brooklyn headed north but the last pings on her cell phone were in the Green Lake neighborhood, according to her family. I believe she walked north up Brooklyn, crossed over 50th and caught a bus to Green Lake. There is a bus stop on 50th just ½ block north of the Safeway that has 3 bus routes that go to the Green Lake neighborhood. After that, no one knows.

I know that it is less likely that the remains found are Marizela, but I keep checking in to see. Prayers for Marizela's family during this Christmas season. Holidays can be especially hard when you lose a loved one.
