Found Deceased WA - Matthew Anfeldt, 20, said family was killed, blood around mouth, Thurston Co., 28 Feb 2019

In the picture his mother posted from after the alleged assault in December 2018, those cuts in his skin look incredibly superficial. Perhaps he did this to himself due to drugs or a psychotic break??
The thought went through my mind as well. In fact, IMO, that’s more likely, and to me personally, as a result of mental health concerns. So very sad for Matthew and his mom.

This case sure is weird. I assumed drugs (meth) due to the short amount of time between him leaving his sister and showing up at neighbors panicked. But the previous attack has me wondering if there’s a chance that maybe he was being chased, and maybe he was told his parents were already dead. Far fetched, I know, but where could he be?

Details of Disappearance
Anfeldt was last seen near the Speedway Grocery on Old Highway 99 southwest in Grand Mound, Washington at 5:30 p.m. on February 28, 2019. He left his Tenino, Washington home without his shoes or his phone.

After leaving home, he had gone to the neighbors and then out to into the road, stopping traffic. He was panicked and shouting, saying his family had been murdered and he needed to hide. Witnesses called 911, saying it looked like he was having a mental breakdown.

A short time later he was seen two miles away at the grocery store. He had blood around his mouth and was crying and yelling about needing to hide. The clerk called 911 and Anfeldt ran out the door. He has never been heard from again.

Sometime in December 2018, Anfeldt was "jumped" near the Rite Aid pharmacy in Lacey, Washington. His attacker(s) caused visible injuries. There was no report filed with the police, but Anfeldt told friends about it and said some people were after him. He didn't mention any names or say why these people wanted to harm him. It's unclear whether the attack was related to his later disappearance.

His family does not know what caused his unusual behavior, but none of them had been harmed or killed. His sister had seen him about an hour before he arrived at the neighbors' in a panicked state, and he'd been fine then. He wasn't dressed appropriately for the cold weather that evening, and since his disappearance there has been no activity on his phone, social media accounts or bank accounts. His case remains unsolved.

praying for the family of Mathew. drugs can do strange things to people highway 99 is a messed up stretch and he literally could have gone anywhere. And he was on meth he could have hid for days without food. I would ask the homeless in the area they would know where all the little dope spots or shooting galleries.

Based on how quickly his symptoms came on, my best guess would be PCP - “angel dust” can cause symptoms like hallucinations, psychosis, violent behavior, paranoia, depersonalization. Effects can come on pretty quickly, from a few minutes to an hour based on how its consumed.

How did Matthew manage to make it from over the fence, and into the street across his neighbor's house to the Speed Way grocery store in 8 minutes? It is a distance of two miles from his neighbors to the Speed Way. If he was on foot and ran the entire time maybe he got there in 15 20 min..

Circumstances of Disappearance
Matthew Anfeldt disappeared suddenly under bizarre circumstances. He walked outside to go the main house to get his phone to never be seen or heard from again, by his family. Minutes later police surrounded our house stating that Matthew had ran barefoot to the neighbors, crying and yelling that his family had been, or was going to be harmed, and that people were after him.

He then ran across a neighbor's yard going out into a busy highway, yelling and crying the same thing. Minutes later he ended up 2 miles down the road at a small gas station, again yelling and crying the same thing and trying to hide. While the clerk was on the phone with 911, Matthew took off out the side door, never to be seen or heard from again.

NamUs - Circumstances of Disappearance - Matthew was last seen near Speedway Grocery on Old Hwy 99 in the Grand Mound/Tenino area on the evening of February 28, 2019. He was wearing a black and gray Chicago Bulls sweatshirt and gray sweatpants, and no shoes. He does not have his cell phone or wallet with him. Matthew was in an agitated mental state, making false claims and statements of wanting to “hide.”

I'd guess that without further sightings, he'd found a hidey-hole not far from the store. Drain, sewer, crawlspace, chimney, cabinet, attic, ad infinitum. He's young and small, coupled with the strength of chemical and/or mental induced fear, he could have wedged in and succumbed to the elements, heart failure, suffocation, injury from the vehicle contact. Cases like Ada, Harley, and more, show that they need not travel far.

PART 1
- Matthew loved wrestling in high school and had a particular close and loving relationship with his great-grandmother. He loved animals, especially his kitty.
- His mom describes him as a calm and honest person - never an aggressive kid.
- He struggled with addiction after falling into the wrong crowd. He went to live with his aunt in the fall of 2018.
- He started changing his life around in winter 2018 and according to his family, he stopped doing drugs.
- Matthew's father wasn't very present in his life. He struggled with drugs and mental illness.
- On December 22nd, 2018, Matthew was jumped and brutally beaten by 3 individuals. He was very traumatized by this - he had lots of bruises, road rash, and they carved KILL into his chest.
- He'd been sober for 30 days at the point of the attack, and did continue to work on his sobriety. In January 2019 he was excelling in an outpatient program and had a clean UA.
- In Jan 2019, his mom flew his older brother Anthony in to Washington to surprise him for his 20th birthday, because Matt was missing Anthony and he lived in Alaska. His mom feels really happy this at least got to happen before Matt went missing.
-When he went missing he was very concerned about money. He had been suspended from work for missing days while his brother was visiting. His mom offered to help him with these bills on the morning of the day he went missing.
- He had recently graduated from outpatient addiction services.
- His mom was at a friend's house having dinner on Feb 28 when she got a call from her daughter saying the sheriff's office was at their house and Matthew was running around terrified and screaming. His mom rushed home and the cops told her they had received multiple 911 calls because her son had stopped traffic on the highway by running into it barefoot - he didn't bring his cellphone or shoes with him.
- His mom said nobody was scared OF him when they encountered him, just that he seemed genuinely incredibly terrified about whatever he had perceived was going on.
- When he was in the highway, he jumped on the back of a utility truck and ended up at a convenience store where the clerk called 911 when he was trying to go behind the counter to hide. He was shaking, sweating, and had blood on his face.
- He took off out of the side door which leads to other buildings, it's all fenced in. Nobody knows what happened from there.
- Matthew had spent the day with his sister and her boyfriend. They said he was fine all day, they had fun and went bowling etc, she didn't think he was on drugs or anything.
- They got home at 4pm - the first call to 911 from the neighbors was around 5am.
- His family is adamant he didn't have time/privacy to do drugs that day. His mom is very confused - he left his sister's room to go grab his phone and didn't even make it to his phone before the "episode" began. His mom thinks the assault he experienced is linked to his disappearance.
- A tip was received regarding a suspicious white vehicle with tinted windows near their driveway on the day of Matt's disappearance. Matt's mom witnessed a similar vehicle come in their driveway after Matt disappeared also - when the driver saw her, they stopped and turned around. The police told her they didn't have the resources to investigate this.
- The first neighbor who called 911 had also been a teacher of Matt's in school. She described him as "scared out of his mind". She only didn't let him in her house because she was scared her dog would bite him. He was yelling that someone was after him. She witnessed him jump a fence and run onto highway 99.
- Matthew was banging on car windows yelling that his family was dead and people were after him. He jumped on the hood of a different car as well. A witness described him as "in agony".
- He ran full speed into a glass door at the gas station. He was crying, shaking, and repeating, "They killed my family!" The clerk said he was only in the store about 30 seconds.
- No trace of Matthew was found.
- A girl who worked at McDonalds called in a tip that she thinks she went to a party with Matt on Saturday, March 2 at a Motel 6 in Tumwater, WA (16 miles from where he was last seen) after Matt and a guy named Sam came into the restaurant and invited her to a party when her shift was done. She said she was absolutely positive it was him. She said Matt was doing dabs and was also on mushrooms, and that he kept saying something bad happened to his family. However, Matt's family and the police do not think this was Matt due to surveillance they viewed at the McDonald's.
- Multiple searches have taken place in the area of the gas station. The store owner told police he didn't want them to search his property, and has oddly refused to cooperate with the investigation. When Matt's mom came to the store to talk to him, the guy said to her, "I don't need this b*llsh*t." He has told the cops multiple times to get off his property when they've come to search for/ask questions about Matt.

Detectives investigating whether young man's disappearance is linked to previous attack in Lacey
Maybe there is some connection to his previous attack or it could be possible that he was under the influence of some type of hallucinating drug and the thoughts about the previous attack caused him to believe that people where out to get his family and him. I don't think that would explain where he is now though unless he could have gotten lost out in the woods around the area he was last seen in and just succumbed to the elements or he could be hiding out in the homeless camps. Of course this is all just my thoughts and opinions anything is possible.

First Half of Part 2 Notes:
- Matt didn't have his phone or wallet on him when he disappeared.
- Police looked for him throughout the night.
- The detective in charge of his case (Detective Hamilton) seems to really care about this case and the family.
- Matthew had told his sister the day he went missing that he had stayed awake for 3 days as some sort of internet challenge. She told him he was crazy for doing that.
- He told his sister several times that he was super tired. He got up to get his phone and never returned - that was the last time she saw him. She heard the sirens several minutes later.

- His sister never witnessed him take drugs or drink alcohol on Feb 28.
- The police did 3 searches in a 130 mile stretch of land between the gas station and Sarah's house where he was last seen. They used drones, cadaver dogs, and ground searchers, and they found absolutely nothing.
- Matt worked for a temp agency at the time, and his employer said he was very well liked by colleagues.
- Matt was paid with a prepaid Visa cash card that was loaded with his earnings. He left that card at his mom's.
- Missing adult cases are tricky to investigate when there's no proof a crime has been committed, because it's not possible to get a search warrant for the gas station or his phone, etc. His mom is super frustrated about this.
- The Vanished received Matt's file from the Thurston County Sheriff's Department.
- Before he disappeared, he was expressing belief in conspiracy theories he was reading online. He was investigating the illuminati and their connection to famous people, and he wanted to join the illuminati in hopes of becoming a famous rapper.
- He read online if he sold his soul to Satan, after signing a contract, the Illuminati would make him famous.
- In his emails, they found he was in communications with someone with an Illuminati email address. He sent them $300, and in return they sent him an initiation code which mentioned a task he had to complete - yet no task was stated in the email
- The detective believes this is an internet scam (of course), but he investigated it and found nothing of substance behind it

- Right before he went missing, Matt posted a video on Instagram of him rapping about the Illuminati and how he'd have to leave his family and old life behind to become a famous rapper
- The chorus: "Should I do it? I don't know."
- Could his mental health have been declining but it wasn't overtly noticeable until the day he went missing?
- The detective has investigated every lead he has received about Matt and nothing has come of it.
- Matt never told anyone he was intending to go missing or anything of that nature.
- The detective thinks it was a psychotic break or drug use or a combination of those two things.
- When he claimed to be assaulted in Dec. 2018, he didn't want to report it to the police, but he did have his mom take pictures of his wounds to document the attack.
- The cops don't know if the assault is related to his disappearance.
