Found Deceased WA - Matthew Anfeldt, 20, said family was killed, blood around mouth, Thurston Co., 28 Feb 2019

Second Half of Part 2 Notes:
  • Matt started smoking & drinking at 16, then abusing Triple C's, then he did meth for a little bit. His main drug of choice was adderall.
  • Matt had ADHD so he was self-medicating with the adderall.
  • In 2017, he got 3 charges regarding alcohol & drugs within a thirty day period, and his mom got him furloughed from jail to get medical treatment.
  • He went through a really good rehab twice that helped him significantly both times.
  • After he got officially diagnosed with ADHD, he got medication for it - not Adderall but (I think) Ritalin or something along those lines.
  • His friend Kendra says in the podcast that Matt's dad had schizophrenia and she thinks he may have had a sudden onset, potentially triggered by drug use.
  • His mom thinks drug trafficking is involved and the situation is "bigger than they know".

How did Matthew manage to make it from over the fence, and into the street across his neighbor's house to the Speed Way grocery store in 8 minutes? It is a distance of two miles from his neighbors to the Speed Way. If he was on foot and ran the entire time maybe he got there in 15 20 min..
He didn't. It was eight minutes between the time police RESPONDED to the home and the second 911 call from the Speedway Grocery.

See comments by Matthew's mother on this post: Help Find Matthew Anfeldt

If that is accurate, the timeline should look like this:

5:05 - 5:10 pm MA walked out of his sisters room to head to the main house to get his phone. (He had to walk outside to get to the main house.)
Approx 5:17 pm The first 911 call came in from the neighbors.
5:27 pm The police arrived at MA's home.
5:35 pm (8 minutes later) The second 911 call was made by Speedway Grocery.

His mom posted this a few days ago on the find page:
My son, last night I had my first dream of you. You walked into the room, and I saw your face so clearly for the first time since I last physically saw you. I remember putting my hands on your face and beginning to sob and looking up at you as you smiled your sweet smile at me. No words were said between us and then very quickly I was awoken, with the harsh reminder you are not here. A big tug at my heartstrings today and a reminder of how much I miss & love you
Matthew

There isn't much in the way of actual case updates, but thought I would let everyone know that I did meet with the Detective yesterday. We spent a couple hours going over the case and some things that I wanted to see. Those that do not know, I have been very much involved in my sons case, from praying daily to doing my own investigative work.
**************************
A couple things were brought up...

1) I have always wanted to do a search around the Scatter Creek area that is behind the store further back. The Detective is going to be looking into getting some dogs and seeing if this is even an option. Hopefully this can be done soon. If the dogs are brought in, it will likely be closer to summer when the creek is lower.
Should we not be able to do this, I will be looking into doing my own. What I would request is if you know someone who lives in this area, that you put them in touch with me so that I can start to compile a list of land owners to get permission from them.

2) While I can't go into the details, some outside agencies have agreed to assist the detective with parts of the case.

3) We went over the 911 calls and what was said. I am again asking for EVERYONES HELP!

There were 2 White Trucks seen interacting with Matthew the day he went missing. I need your help in finding the owners or the people driving these trucks! These people have NEVER come forward to my knowledge.

* There was a lifted White Truck headed towards the direction of Tenino that was stopped and talking to my son. It was thought there was 2 males in the truck.

* There was a White Utility Truck headed in the direction of the Speedway Grocery store Matthew was last seen at. Matthew was seen jumping onto the back of this truck as it was moving slowly. It is thought that this truck is how Matthew got to the Speedway Grocery so quickly. There was a witness that saw this same kind of truck pull off to the side of the road in front of the store, where they saw Matthew get out of the back and the truck took off.

4) I know this might be a long shot at this point, but I'm going to ask anyway..
If anyone on Nutmeg has video of the road and still has some from 2/28/2019, please please let me know.

A witness had stated there was a white car parked in the middle of Nutmeg with a couple indivuals standing outside of it. If you remember this and can provide any information at all, please please contact me or the Detective.

4) There was mention in the 911 calls that he may have basically run behind the store though the backyards. What wasn't clear was if this was an actual 911 call with this sighting or if this was an assumption made by the clerk at the store, when she called 911. Either way, we have to look at everything. I would ask that if you live on Nutmeg or the next road down on the other side of the store that you please check every space you have. I would think he would have been noticed by now, but again you never know.
*********************
It had been a long time since we had come together. The collaboration with the Detective meant a great deal to me. I continue to hope and pray that someone or something will guide us to Matthew. At the end of the day, the most important thing to our Family is closure and simply said, that means finding him.

I am listening to this podcast now on Vanished from September 14 & 15, 2020. It’s two parts.

Part 2
‎The Vanished Podcast: Matthew Anfeldt Part 1 on Apple Podcasts

“On the evening of February 28, 2019, the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call from a woman in Tenino, Washington stating that her neighbor, 20-year-old Matthew Anfeldt, was at her door behaving oddly. He said that his family had either been injured or killed and that someone was after him. She then observed Matthew run across her yard, jump the fence and run out onto a busy highway, causing multiple vehicles to stop or swerve to avoid hitting him. Matthew jumped on the back of a truck that was traveling west and later jumped off of the truck a couple of miles down the road where witnesses saw him. They reported that Matthew was acting paranoid and afraid inside a local Speedway in Grand Mound, Washington. After that, Matthew disappeared, never to be seen or heard from again.

If you have any information about the disappearance of Matthew Anfeldt, please call the Thurston County Sheriff’s Office at 360-704-2740 or contact Detective Hamilton directly at 360-786-5279.

You can follow Matthew’s story on Facebook at Help Find Matthew Anfeldt.”

Matthew's mother spoke out regarding the disappearance of Gabriel Davies (who has now been found and charged with murder).

Matthew’s mother, Sarah, says Davies case has brought up a lot of painful memories. And it’s a pain she knows his family is going through.

“As a mom, I’m thinking of his mom and what I went through. And what I still continue to go through almost 4 years later. … You can’t explain it. No one should have to endure this. No one,” Sarah Anfeldt said.

[...]

As someone who has experienced this before, she says it’s important for the community to show support for the family.

“But let people in. Let people help that have been through it,” Anfeldt said.

“Because while people might think they know or understand, you don’t know until you’ve been in these shoes,” Anfeldt said.

[...]

Anfeldt says a lot of missing person cases are handled in various ways. “They are just not handled the way that one would assume. There’s a lot of things I wish I had really not have relied on just the police,” Andfeldt said.

She says it’s important for people to reach out to the police if they do see anything. “Please, please, please take those things to the police. Please, please, please. It’s ok to say I’ve reported it to the police so the family knows about it,” Anfeldt said.

Matthew Anfeldt, Karen Bodine, Nancy Moyer and Logan Schiendelman are familiar names to many South Thurston County residents for the mystery still surrounding their cases.

[...]

In an effort to raise awareness for unsolved cases in Thurston County and to show victims and their families that they have not been forgotten, Boheme started the Facebook page Thurston County Cold Cases, also known as Southwest Washington Cold Cases, in December 2022. The page, which is not affiliated with any law enforcement agency, features publicly-available information related to cold cases and active missing persons cases across Southwest Washington.

“To be completely honest, the goal of the page is simply to show the victim respect and to honor them as they deserve,” Boheme said.

The secondary goal of the page is to keep the victims’ cold cases in the public eye, which could encourage someone with possible information that could help advance the case to come forward.

[...]

Boheme also wants to showcase her field, forensic genetic genealogy, as a tool that can be used in the investigation of cold cases.

[...]

Boheme has expressed interest in speaking to Thurston County Sheriff Derek Sanders about the possibility of using forensic genetic genealogy and DNA testing to help solve cold cases, but the continuance of those investigations depends on the sheriff’s office having a detective to pursue them.

[...]

To help solve that issue, Sanders said he plans to ask for a full-time missing persons/cold cases investigator position to be added to the department’s budget.

PART 1
- Matthew loved wrestling in high school and had a particular close and loving relationship with his great-grandmother. He loved animals, especially his kitty.
- His mom describes him as a calm and honest person - never an aggressive kid.
- He struggled with addiction after falling into the wrong crowd. He went to live with his aunt in the fall of 2018.
- He started changing his life around in winter 2018 and according to his family, he stopped doing drugs.
- Matthew's father wasn't very present in his life. He struggled with drugs and mental illness.
- On December 22nd, 2018, Matthew was jumped and brutally beaten by 3 individuals. He was very traumatized by this - he had lots of bruises, road rash, and they carved KILL into his chest.
- He'd been sober for 30 days at the point of the attack, and did continue to work on his sobriety. In January 2019 he was excelling in an outpatient program and had a clean UA.
- In Jan 2019, his mom flew his older brother Anthony in to Washington to surprise him for his 20th birthday, because Matt was missing Anthony and he lived in Alaska. His mom feels really happy this at least got to happen before Matt went missing.
-When he went missing he was very concerned about money. He had been suspended from work for missing days while his brother was visiting. His mom offered to help him with these bills on the morning of the day he went missing.
- He had recently graduated from outpatient addiction services.
- His mom was at a friend's house having dinner on Feb 28 when she got a call from her daughter saying the sheriff's office was at their house and Matthew was running around terrified and screaming. His mom rushed home and the cops told her they had received multiple 911 calls because her son had stopped traffic on the highway by running into it barefoot - he didn't bring his cellphone or shoes with him.
- His mom said nobody was scared OF him when they encountered him, just that he seemed genuinely incredibly terrified about whatever he had perceived was going on.
- When he was in the highway, he jumped on the back of a utility truck and ended up at a convenience store where the clerk called 911 when he was trying to go behind the counter to hide. He was shaking, sweating, and had blood on his face.
- He took off out of the side door which leads to other buildings, it's all fenced in. Nobody knows what happened from there.
- Matthew had spent the day with his sister and her boyfriend. They said he was fine all day, they had fun and went bowling etc, she didn't think he was on drugs or anything.
- They got home at 4pm - the first call to 911 from the neighbors was around 5am.
- His family is adamant he didn't have time/privacy to do drugs that day. His mom is very confused - he left his sister's room to go grab his phone and didn't even make it to his phone before the "episode" began. His mom thinks the assault he experienced is linked to his disappearance.
- A tip was received regarding a suspicious white vehicle with tinted windows near their driveway on the day of Matt's disappearance. Matt's mom witnessed a similar vehicle come in their driveway after Matt disappeared also - when the driver saw her, they stopped and turned around. The police told her they didn't have the resources to investigate this.
- The first neighbor who called 911 had also been a teacher of Matt's in school. She described him as "scared out of his mind". She only didn't let him in her house because she was scared her dog would bite him. He was yelling that someone was after him. She witnessed him jump a fence and run onto highway 99.
- Matthew was banging on car windows yelling that his family was dead and people were after him. He jumped on the hood of a different car as well. A witness described him as "in agony".
- He ran full speed into a glass door at the gas station. He was crying, shaking, and repeating, "They killed my family!" The clerk said he was only in the store about 30 seconds.
- No trace of Matthew was found.
- A girl who worked at McDonalds called in a tip that she thinks she went to a party with Matt on Saturday, March 2 at a Motel 6 in Tumwater, WA (16 miles from where he was last seen) after Matt and a guy named Sam came into the restaurant and invited her to a party when her shift was done. She said she was absolutely positive it was him. She said Matt was doing dabs and was also on mushrooms, and that he kept saying something bad happened to his family. However, Matt's family and the police do not think this was Matt due to surveillance they viewed at the McDonald's.
- Multiple searches have taken place in the area of the gas station. The store owner told police he didn't want them to search his property, and has oddly refused to cooperate with the investigation. When Matt's mom came to the store to talk to him, the guy said to her, "I don't need this b*llsh*t." He has told the cops multiple times to get off his property when they've come to search for/ask questions about Matt.
Well that’s suspicious!

A hunter found Andrew’s remains on October 28th. So very sad for his family.
