I don’t know the process in the US, but if you apply in the UK, you need to disclose any mental health condition and medical records are reviewed.
Lots of folks join the military after graduation from high school, mental disorders may not have manifested. Also, it seems like school shooters, familial murders, there’s folks who knew they was something off about them.

I was just sort of meandering there. When I said "why would he do that?" I meant why would he go to the extent of trying to hide his body from vultures under water or in a mine. I do think he'll off himself.
That's what I was asking also.

I'm a bit behind... is the reward a new thing in the last day or was it offered earlier on does anyone know?
It's not new. I've seen news of the reward being offered as old as 6/4. I didn't check to see if there was any older news about it cuz that's old enough.

Authorities are offering a $20,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of Travis Decker who is wanted on charges of murder.

Here's one such older article: $20K reward offered for information on Wenatchee suspect Travis Decker

I highly doubt that anyone is excusing his horrific actions. I would certainly hope not. But his mental health diagnoses are another piece of the puzzle. We're all just sleuthing and speculating here. :)
Agreed. Decker’s mental health is an understanding not an excuse. And, most posters here.

To give authorities the finger and to make his ex look over her shoulder for the rest of her life. Is he alive? Is he dead? Will he show up on her doorstep at any moment to kill her? Will he sneak up and attack a hiker?

I think he likes playing games and he wants to control/taunt her and others even from the grave.

So TD was only deployed for 4 months to Afghanistan in 2014. I wonder what position he was assigned and why he made it back to the States so soon? 4 months is a fairly short deployment.

IMO

MOO He is self obsessed and his thinking processes have been deformed by it.
What is his self interest at this point? Justification, evasion, survival - avoidance of any questions about the murders.

If you use G Maps to locate Rock Island Campground to Johnny Creek Campground to Colchuck lake and set directions to walking you will see the approximate route they think he took.
I think the day of the hikers sighted him and subsequent helicopter overhead sighting that he immediately descended to the flat lands around Cle Elum Lake before they got the perimeter set. That escape is now several days ago.

Dec 2014 was the year security turned over to the Afghan government due to it seeming at the time that the Taliban threat had been subdued.

Just found this 6/10 NPR article. Some tidbits that caught my attention.

1. ""New information has revealed Mr. Decker is well versed in wilderness survival and capable of spending days or even weeks in the wilderness on his own and with very little equipment," the sheriff's office said Wednesday."

... So perhaps it is possible that if TD was the "ill-equiped lone hiker" he could also be able to survive in the wild for a while.

2. "[WD] told police that there were no issues during her last interaction with Decker on May 30, though she noted he was "quieter than usual which was out of character.""

... I wonder if our psychotherapist sleuthers can opine on this acute behavior shift?

3. "According to the affidavit, Decker's pickup truck had blankets, car seats, food, a wallet and other items inside..."

...leaving behind a wallet may indicate an unplanned exit? or no intention of returning to society? or a new identity / life ahead?

4. "Authorities have... interviewed his known associates and visited local sites he was known to frequent — while also acknowledging the possibility that he [TD] has left the area."

...this is the first I've seen LE acknowledge TD may not be in the area... perhaps this was pre 'ill-equiped lone hiker' sighting?

IMO

Do we know if TD owned any ATVs, dirt bikes, or off-road vehicles? Has LE confirmed he left on foot? Were there tire tracks of any sort?

... or a hybrid / mountain bike even.

I know TD was homeless and as such his resources were likely slim to none. But did he have a storage unit with stuff like this from when he could afford them?

Could he have stolen a car or atv and then flat towed (cheap hitch) up to the campsite the day before (LE has said TD's trucks's GPS showed he went to the campsite the day before)?

Or if a smaller ride like a dirt bike or mountain bike did he have it in the bed of his truck when he went to the campsite?

Or could TD have just walked out and hitched a ride into oblivion before the search even started?

These are the questions that nag at me!

We need some new sleuthing info. Starting to rehash everything save for a car or atv, which we discussed very briefly. I hope LE gives us some new info to sleuth or better yet finds him.

I wonder how much is confirmation bias, select a bunch of facts that prove aspects of what they knew, while deprecating other facts and enhancing others and giving them all weight, unconsciously.

Possible rode a bicycle back to Leavenworth and caught a ride? It's mostly all downhill and he could have coasted nearly all the way, 18 miles, to Leavenworth. Maybe even had another vehicle there.

I asked Google (AI) and it said Specific Mission Requirements, Forward Deployment/Rotations, Replacing a Soldier, Specific Training Programs, Individual Circumstances, or Change in Policy or Situation (with descriptions).

A lot of joined the military to just get away from what was going on where we were. Knew a soccer professional soccer player who hurt his ankle and couldn't play so just up and joined. My roommate was a designer and got into an argument with his family over the business and he ditched. Some people think they are escaping their problem (mental health issues), but they run and the problem is always there inside of them. Like people who are angry all of the time.(I went in because unemployment was really high at the time and I just wanted to get out of Dodge, so to speak. The military was a free ticket on a plane.)
