Ihsan and Zahraa Ali found NOT GUILTY of attempted murder. They’d bee on trial accused of trying to kill their 17-yr-old daughter outside Timberline HS last fall

After three days of deliberations, a jury found both parents not guilty of attempted murder.

However, the girl’s father, Ihsan, was found guilty of assault and unlawful imprisonment. The mother, Zahraa, was only found guilty of violating a court order, but was determined to be not guilty of attempted murder or assault.

Sentencing for both parents is set for mid-August. Mrs. Ali will be released from custody Thursday on her own personal recognizance but is ordered not to leave Thurston County and follow no contact orders that are in effect.

What a very sad verdict. The only reason he is still even in custody was previous domestic abuse charges. He will get a slap on the wrist. She is free. I guess okay to strangle your daughter just like in Iraq. now that trial is over I will say something very off putting about this judge. I can't put my finger on it but for a minute I almost thought she was going to release him too.

I am not surprised in the verdict, no reason other than my gut feeling. The jury got it wrong. jmo

The longer I am thinking about this verdict, the more upset I am getting.
How could a jury find him not guilty of attempted murder? He choked his daughter well past her going unconscious even though people were trying to get him to stop. Make it make sense.

The only thing I can think of is that there were some strong voices on the jury who thought that no one should tell them how to raise their children, no matter what they do.

I perhaps now understand why the jury asked for a clearer instruction on what "judicial authority" meant.

@Seattle1 I'm thinking about you. How are you doing?

This verdict is very unsettling : ( I wonder what will happen to the daughter now? She should not, under any circumstances, be given back to her parents!

If you think IA was 'mad' that his daughter was dating a boy and ran away because she didn't want to go overseas....just how mad do you think he is now, that she put him in jail, and tried to get him in prison for years? The 'shame' that he must feel will be boiling over when he is finally released, IMO.

What a travesty

I am extremely upset over this unfair trial imo. Last I checked a forced marriage is illegal and should have been included. The judge was wrong to leave it out. I saw a trial same thing as fatima and they were allowed to include these facts in AZ.

The msm are are calling this an attempted honor killing and arranged marriage which also make me ill. There is no honor in this and its def not an arranged marriage.

I hope and pray Fatima is able to get away, change her name and live a happy life like she deserves.

What did you see reported about that?

Did the state try and get those charges entered as evidence if he was convicted?

I read abuse snips that FA told the police that Seattle1 posted from the Daily Mail and it was brutal abuse from a very mentally deranged man..IA. and his wife and daughter.
I hadn't read anything about prior abuse charges.

In contrast to you, I am shocked.
We both agree that the jury got it wrong. The only thing I can think of is that there were a few very strong voices on the jury that defended unfettered parental rights. <sigh>

Of course this is JMO.

she is 18. not going to be "given back" to anyone but there are younger children at home. Mr. Ali will be on the street in the near future and he I think is a danger to society.

FA's 18 now.
It was reported that she was still with Isiah and living with his family.
The only confirmation that there remains a relationship was Court TV reporting the other day that she was in the gallery leaning on Isiah's mother.

ZA has the original restrictions on her until Aug 18th sentencing.
I gather that covers all aspects of her being near or in touch with FA. Isiah and his family.

Hopefully both parents got a damn good taste of what jail was like here.
They can always return to Iraq.

turaj in posts # 200 nd #205 expresses safety concerns for FA and Isiah's family, who it was said FA is living with.

it was said in court as his attorney was trying to get him released today.

So I'm listening back on the proceedings but volume is very low. My understanding is that Zahraa is to be released on her own recognizance, with the restriction that she not leave the county. A 'normal' sentence for her crime is 12 months, with release after 9 months with good behavior. She has already been in custody for 10 months.

For Ihsan, his lawyer asked that he be released as a normal sentence is for 12 for 14 months (not sure if I caught this correctly). The judge denied this and sentencing will be on August 18.

I hate the thought that this man, who almost killed his daughter will be released soon! grrrrrrrrr!

My thoughts are with Fatima as well as with Isiah's family. I can't imagine how they are feeling right now. 😢

ETA: corrected spelling of names.

Last I saw reported the 2 young boys were dropped off in Canada with her MIL and uncle.
Are they still there?

We know CPS stepped in but we don't know what else they may have done involving the young boys.

Hopefully if the boys are now in Washington or return that CPS actually stays involved.
Though I can see that enraging the parents.
I did see ZA shed a few years when she realized she was getting out of jail then and there.

Question: If someone strangled their wife until well past the time they went unconscious, and people were fighting to get them to stop, would the verdict have been the same?

Or is the verdict because children are considered 'property' of their parents?

I don't know. <sigh>

He was found guilty of only 4th degree assault.

I doubt we'll hear from any jurors.
I totally get ZA not being found guilty with attempted murder and attempted kidnapping and it being a stretch during deliberations and her attorney did give the jurors much to ponder about her actions which the jury ran with.
Not so with the father.
imo
