NOT GUILTY WA - Parents try to kidnap daughter over forced marriage - November 3, 2024 (NG of attempted murder; Guilty of lesser charges)

  • #161
Now that the trial has ended, I don't think "honor" had anything to do with what happened to FA. I think this was about money and two parents who could not control their 17-year-old "westernized" daughter as they believed appropriate.

FA has two older sisters who do not appear to be in arranged marriages.

IMO, I think Dad wanted to sell FA to some old dude in Iraq because he learned for the first time in Sept that FA had a boyfriend, and the parents did not approve of this, and also believed FA would continue to date him or others.

Much has been reported about FA having a one-way ticket to Iraq, but all of the Alis' traveling to Iraq had one-way tickets because they did not know the timing required to process Iraq passports for the younger brothers/sons.

We know that FA changed her testimony at trial when it came to describing her mother's actions. At the hospital, she clearly told the investigating officer that her mother also tried to choke her when she was on the ground, but at trial, she testified that her mother did not try to hurt her. IMO, this had to be very difficult for FA--knowing her mother did not try to protect her from her father. :(

The student was FA's boyfriend and I'm surprised she wasn't arrested for grabbing him.
In many jurisdictions grabbing someone would be considered assault.
I don't know who would make the call though, LE or Isiah's parents because he was a minor.
It most likely would have made FA's life even more difficult for her had her mother been arrested.
Putting an protective order on the mother by Isiah's father was a smart move.
imo
She was charged but you'll have to listen to the charging conference to determine which charges relate to IB.

Not true, charges for each include two counts of attempted kidnapping!

OP may want to listen to today's "charging conference" for a better understanding of what exactly the jurors will be deciding:

"ZAHRAA SUBHI MOHSIN ALI"

VIOLATION OF A PROTECTION ORDER DOMESTIC
ASSAULT 2ND DEGREE DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
BURGLARY 2ND DEGREE
ATTEMPTED MURDER 2ND DEGREE
ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING 2ND DEGREE
ATTEMPTED KIDNAPPING 1ST DEGREE

Thanks, I'll look for it.

"There's no evidence that was ever put forth that he was intending to strangle her," Kaeding said. "What we have here is we have a melee, a mob, right? We have chaos going on."

During Stone's rebuttal, she argued nothing about what Mr. Ali was doing was trying to protect the victim, and she reiterated multiple witnesses testified to seeing Mr. Ali choking his daughter.

Closing arguments took up most of the day Monday. The jury will come back Tuesday morning to begin their deliberations.

Agree - I think it was hard for FA to testify against her mother in court.

With regard to her older sister, do we know that they aren't in arranged marriages? If not, they may have married Iraqis - either in the U.S. or in Iraq - and are in marriages which are acceptable to the father.

IMO, the sisters are not married because FA testified they both live at home, and there was no mention of husbands.

HA, 21, was going to stay behind with dad, and not travel to Iraq, but NA,19, was expected to travel to Iraq with mom, FA, and brothers.

This article reads like the Daily Mail. It's an article from the Toronto Sun. Pretty much considered as tabloid journalism, most of it not really fact-based. JMO

We know that the young Ali boys made it to Canada before ZA's arrest, and this MSM confirms some details. Like DM, great photos by Lacey PD.

FA's siblings should be thanking her. She probably saved all of them from the crazy monster they lived with. He's always been abusive but worse since FA's younger sister died in 2021.

5/25/25

Ihsan did not take the news well, and began 'hitting her and her siblings for the smallest things', Detective Julie Mullen wrote in her report.

The girl said the abuse got 'really bad' when they moved to Washington state to get better healthcare for her sister and be closer to her uncle in Canada.

'She gave an example of her dad stripping her little sister naked and throwing out her clothes because she didn't want to wear certain things,' police wrote.

'Her dad also ripped all of her clothes up and threw them away because he thought they looked bad.'

Jenat-Alhuissa died in hospice care on January 31, 2021, aged nine.

The girl said the family knew Ihsan 'was going to get really violent' whenever he said, 'Turn up the TV, let's talk'.

One time he hit her older sister Norrulhuda (Nora), now 19, 'with the wood end of a shovel on her arms leaving bruises for sneaking away to visit a friend'.

Another time her oldest sister Haneen, now 21, accidently spilled tea on Ihsan after Nora tripped her, so he grabbed the teapot and threw tea on Haneen.

I was reading up on the cost of flights from the US to Iraq.
October is the cheapest month to fly there and a one-way can be purchased for around $400.00.

Any idea what the father does for a living?

IIRC:
Something was said during the trial that he worked like 16 hrs a day.

It appears that CPS had been involved prior to Oct.18th.
Isiah's mom had called them and met with them and FA.
Has anything been said about this in court?
It's mentioned at the end of the document inclosed in this article.

I imagine many people who know they are guilty, while sitting in the courts, put on a face. But my word how Mr Ali is looking and sitting, so casually as if he was just waiting for a bus to arrive.

I think FA is the only one to challenge the parents in wanting to date a non approved man. This mother and father based on demeanor in court seem to still to this day feel what they did is right and I believe they could do the same this again. Hope this jury gets it right. I think they will.

His demeanor will speak to the jury even though he did not get on stand. Same with mother. They feel they were right in what they did.

My feeling is jury will be back later today with verdicts. I got to thinking about how absolutely fairly and well treated Mr and Mrs Ali are in the legal system in this country. Afforded two very capable attorneys and the expense of trial. An assumption of not guilty and the due process. But if done in Iraq..well just another day. No crime at all. <modsnip>

I don't think this is correct. Isaiah's mom called LE, not CPS. However, she was present when CPS interviewed FA.

The victim's boyfriend's mother later told police that she had been present once for a CPS interview with the 17-year-old victim in which she apparently stated that "her father had recently been threatening her with honor killing for refusing an arranged marriage with an older man in another country."

When the defense was crossing FA, the father's attorney said something about her sister HA and father not going to Iraq because she had work & school, and the father had to run his business.

But that's as close to employment that I recall since this incident was first reported. MOO

I think the jury will fairly quickly be able to find dad guilty, but I think there will be tricky discussions about mom's various charges and the jury instructions are fairly complicated and lengthy. That might slow things down a bit. I'd love see a verdict come in today, but we might have to wait until tomorrow.
