GUILTY Wa - Pat Shunn, 45, & Monique Patenaude, 46, Arlington, 11 April 2016 *arrests*

Why though? How do these dudes think they could get away with it? I don't get this line of thinking, is it revenge on them for taking legal action? Saving face with murderous bravado? How do you take off in your parents car? This suspect was formerly married with children. Ugh, I just don't get what makes these losers tick!

And if this is the dispute over ATV's and dogs off leash on their property, is it really worth murdering them over it? JR wasn't living there, not sure if it was vacant or if he rented it out? There is a big barren area in the middle of the property. Who owns that part?

Wow how sad! Ugh makes me sick that people like this exist. Did I read correctly that the suspect was married with children? Can you imagine the families on both sides? Over what exactly? Seriously this can't be worth it.

Pat and Monique had 20 acres, don't know how much Reed had...

According to that other article he had a wife and son named but as to current status, I don't know. I'm trying not to tip the Terms of Service...

Thank you, it's just so sad to think this is how it has to end.

Officials said today that evidence collected from the missing couple's cars and John Reed's former home -- which was near the couple's -- led detectives to believe Shunn and Patenaude were murdered.

"We believe there was some property disputes between Mr. Reed and Patrick and Monique," Trenary said.

"We believe that [John Reed] has been coming and going from [his former] house," he added.

Few people know the area like Reed.

In the 18 years he’s lived on Whitman Road he’s hiked practically every corner of the hillside locals call Whitman Bench, knows where all the natural springs are and is familiar with the quirks of the river. He was drawn here to his three-acre lot by the privacy he enjoys at the end of the road and the tranquil beauty of living on the banks of the “Stilly.”

I believe I read that Reed had three acres, but I don't remember where now, so take it with a grain of salt.

ETA: Yeah, that's where I thought I saw it. ^^^^^^

Sadly, the outcome most of us were afraid of. Middle age and they are driving their parents' car in the commission of a double murder?? Nothing like involving their poor parents in the crime while they are at it! I suspected that there had to be two involved to dispose of 2 cars and finally some sort of camera was actually working and clear enough to catch them! If this was all done out in the boonies I wonder what camera picked them up? All for what...a dispute over...??

In that area of the country, a lot of people may have game cameras setup. They are motion activated and some can take motion video up to 180 seconds long. I have 4 cameras of my own. A lot of people use them for security in places where electricity isn't available. Of course, a lot of people use them to track animal activity as well, which is what they were originally intended for.

Sad to see this grim update. RIP Pat and Monique.

Sounds like (from the Sea Times article posted above) that John Reed has lived in the area 18 years, is an avid hiker and knows the local trails inside and out. Probably hikes them with his off-leash dogs and his handgun, perhaps disregarding common rules and ethics while recreating on public lands as he did on his neighbor's land. And now we know he doesn't take kindly to disputes over his use of land, and may even kill you over it.

I have long suspected that the nearby unsolved Pinnacle Lake Trail double murder of a Seattle school teacher and her environmentalist daughter in 2006 were the result of a spontaneous verbal altercation on the trail with a Freedom County type of local. The break in the case will be when someone who knows something comes forward and stops protecting whoever killed those women. Obviously I have nothing to link the Reed brothers to that murder. But someone might.

Trajectory. Wonder which way they are going to go in a RED car with an APB(?I would think) and license plate # blasted all over. You cant really make any time driving off I-90, so my thoughts are they are doing a survivalist thing in Eastern Washington past Ellensburg or they bombed along I-90 into North Dakota by now. Cant really see them trying to hide out in Montana, albeit there are many places to practice survivalist skills there....

There is something about the Stillaguamish Valley that reminds me of Deliverance. It is mossy and foggy much of the time. Beautiful but creepy. It was settled by Appalachians. I think they came for logging and coal mines then stayed. I was exploring this area once with a local who told me his neighbors didn't send their kids to school, hunted possum and made their own moonshine. When I think of buying a cabin or small hobby farm in the Cascades this is the last place I would pick because of the culture- redneck isn't the right word because there isn't enough sun but is it backwoods. On the plus side there are so many hiking trails and there is a nice bluegrass festival every summer.

Not surprised local LE isn't exactly proactive in a neighbor dispute in this area.

This is so very true regarding the mindset and character of many of the people in that area. I live closer to the suburbs, but do some light homesteading. I was in a group with Monique (I knew her as Kat) that focused on those things.
I only know they loved animals. I got the impression they were intelligent and progressive, so I'm surprised now to find out that's where they lived.
She was very helpful with chicken questions. It's bizarre to know I was acquainted.

Did anyone say where the car in Ellensburg was located?

The statement released by family :(

First off, we appreciate the effort that the community and specifically law enforcement has put forth to locate Patrick and Monique.

Patrick and Monique are a loving couple who are loved by friends and family. Their 20 acre farm and animals are their passion. They love the outdoors, love their family and friends and, most of all, love life. Wherever they are, they are together.

We appreciate efforts to organize search parties to look for Patrick and Monique. However, we’d like to ask the public to please let law enforcement authorities continue the search and the investigation. If help from the public is needed, they will let you know.

The family appreciates the media respecting our privacy.

It was reported that both of the fugitive brothers were convicted felons........anybody know what they were convicted of ?

This is an actual interview done with John Reed back during that mudslide. It was posted earlier on the thread, but pay attention to the comments that are starting to roll in at the bottom of the article. One of the locals talks about him being an isolationist and how he had "No Trespassing" signs plastered all over his property.

I guess it's okay for him to trespass on everybody else's land, he just doesn't want anybody trespassing on his. He only had a 3 acre parcel, that's not much land to roam on. The missing couple had 20 acres.
