exactly, being engaged, for 2 and a half years according to him, the myspace puts them together for one year, and she is going to school.

She finishes school, and is proud of herself. I'm ok with that.

How did she get to school and back?

She didn't own an auto of her own?

AND;

if they are engaged, especially since last week, why did he say she borrowed his van?

Wouldn't it be "their" van?

BBM.

I missed that. He said 2 1/2 years, but step-grandfather said in an interview she came to live with them in 2008.

Yet another inconsistency in RS's claims?

Smiley, whose maiden name was Kanally, lived with her grandmother Carolene and her late husband, Ron Edgell, in Castle Rock while growing up. She also came to live with the Smiths in Brinnon in 2008, Silas Smith said

Also, on this video, which doesn't show the wine purchase (but it's at the same store with the wine purchase), shows her kind of unsteady on her feet. Noticeably swaying at :39 to :44.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5ccWD-mrYmM

Video of her buying Carlo Rossi white wine. As she left she ran over the curb. Obviously already drinking, if not drunk:

http://www.q13fox.com/news/kcpq-031410-missingmomandson,0,6651388.story

The deputy says the wine was NOT on the receipt. But someone posted an article where another says she DID buy some wine that night. So which is it? Can't anyone in this case get their stories straight?

LE is not saying that the receipt they found in the car is the same receipt from the store with the wine purchase. They are just saying the purchase was not on the receipt they found. They seem to be keeping some info on the down low. Why? Don't know.

They found a receipt in the car? I hadn't heard that; guess I just assumed the receipts were taken from the stores' records.

This has likely been posted previously, but I include it now in case it wasn't or others missed it, too. Regarding appearance of the step-father on the scene:

—http://www.tdn.com/news/local/article_52e58802-3018-11df-a8af-001cc4c002e0.html (SBM)

Article didn't specify WHEN they started searching.

According to RS (his site):

I arrived in Castle Rock around 7:40, and found her Step Father’s house. We started to get worried about 9:00pm, I began to check in with the WSP about accidents. Her step father and I drove around the area to see if we could spot her.

http://www.kirotv.com/news/22859850/detail.html

Snipped from the article:

Inside the van, investigators found children's coloring books, car keys and miscellaneous items, but nothing that can direct them to the whereabouts of Smiley and her son.

Didn't anther article say the doors to the van were open? If true, it's hard to imagine that items like coloring books wouldn't have washed away when the tide rose, especially since the same article linked above says:

"It also appears the water went no higher than the top of the seats."

Heavy items would sink, possibly, but coloring books would have floated & would have been swept away as the waves of the tide rushed in & out of the van. Yet, there they were, found inside the van.
Good point! So van doors were opened after the tide went down?

But a half-full jug of wine and a couple of shoes (one size 13?) "washed up" on the beach...

She fell down on video outside of the restaurant. The video hasn't been released yet.

But the video of her buying wine HAS been released. It's obvious a jug of wine that she purchased.

And it was a big one too.

What are the chances that a jug of wine would 'wash up' on the beach?

Does anyone know when RS filed a missing persons report with the police?

I really want to know what set her off to start her drinking again....

she has a deffered charge thingy which if she reoffends within five years she is charged with the original drink driving and hit and run charge...

this would have finished in april........and she wouldnt have that hanging over her head....
\
After four years and 11 months......one month to go and she starts drinking again......

something has set this lady off to take that risk after keeping out of trouble for such a long time........

also this had me thinking that if she had been drinking and was driving and knew what was at stake if she got caught this is why she may have avoided the freeway and was driving back roads and ended up where she did.....

I know if this was me and this could lead to serious trouble after such a long time I'd be scared stiff of getting caught......

BBM

Was her license suspended?

If she was heading down the beach road with any speed, it would seem possible she hit the bay or tidal pool to explain the splash on the windshield. Through hydroplaning or possibly having the wheel turned it could have spun the van so that the final resting place is sitting backwards in the water. After spinning the tires and trying to get out she realizes the van is stuck. Upset pulls out the keys and sets / throws them on the dash. I would have to assume at this point they are both awake (if he was sleeping prior) He opens a side door to get out and look and sees water - cold, dark and scared at that point.) Disoriented they decide to climb out the back of the van thinking it is pointing towards shore and the easiest / driest way to get to land. By the time they are aware it is getting deeper panic sets in and together they do more to pull each other down then up. With the tides swinging that much it would seem a drowning victim could have traveled very far and not be easy to find. With the wind blowing very hard that night - the pounding on the garage that evening could have been nothing more then something being blown against the house.

Hope this is wrong - but it seems to me to be the simplest conclusion.

Watching those videos of her and her son and her trying to touch his head in the store as if he is mad at her, makes me really angry. She is obviously drunk as she is just standing there in the store swaying back and forth, she buys a jug of wine. I am angry that she put her child through this. I now believe she purposely drove onto that beach in her drunken state - maybe event thought it was fun and was trying to convince her son to go swimming - I have experience with alcoholics and they come up with crazy things when they are drunk.

My heart is aching for that child. I am convinced they are in the water. Maybe that poor kid went in after her.

I am so angry. My aunt is a severe alcoholic and used to do crazy things when I was a kid and I remember that feeling of being a child and trying to take care of an adult so that she didn't hurt herself.

IMO

IMO, this is the most plausible theory, especially given the fact that the bloodhounds failed to pick up their scent on land. Sadly, I believe we will start to see more evidence washing on shore.

I SEE her buying the wine....so, why is LE saying it's not confirmed? Maybe the wine purchase was on a separate receipt?

  • #253
Wow.

And there it is. IMHO.

Even if alcohol IS the reason she is missing, it doesn't change the fact that she & her son are still missing. She & her child should be just as important to find as an alcoholic or not.

I have no clue how the mud could have gotten on the windshield, but I am sure the windshield wipers were used BEFORE LE got to the van. No way would LE turn them on, even to get the van out, incase there's trace evidence on the windshield.

I have been thinking about these wipers...anyone know if it had been raining in the area Saturday evening? I ask because IF she had been using the wipers just before she (or whomever) shut the van off for the last time, the wipers may not have been "parked" when the ignition was shut off. Then, when the tow truck operator came for the van, IF he/she needed to unlock the steering wheel so the front wheels could be lined up for towing, the ignition would have had to be turned at least one click from the locked position. If the wipers had not been turned off prior to the van being shut off earlier, the wipers MAY have made at least one full sweep of the windshield before they got it shut off.

I also think if the van had been submerged up to the top of the seats the mud on the windshield/front of van area could have been deposited as the tide was going back out.

My heart is breaking for him.

IF we find out Shantina did put her son in danger, by drinking & driving or otherwise, you know what makes it so much worse for me? HER grandparents stepped in and got custody of her when she was a little girl, presumably because things weren't great with her parents. Going through that, you'd think she'd spare her son from this - drop him off with friends, family, with her fiance. She should know firsthand that being safe and sound with family is much better than being in danger with a troubled mommy.

I really hope this isn't the case, but there's just no reason Az should have been in that car.

This has been my fear: as she drove into the surf & spun out trying to get unstuck, she did not realize the car had reversed directions. In the darkness, they walked or swam to the back of the car which would put them in deeper water. If the jackets they were wearing were down & wet, the added weight would be very difficult to overcome.

Perhaps while walking along the beach, they met someone who took them home, with him?

Hers was just a sweatshirt, but his was a winter coat. My father and brother drowned because they had heavy wool hunting gear and boots on when their boat capsized. But my sister-in-law was able to swim to shore because she just had a windbreaker. If Shantina had any wits about her at all she should have been able to swim, but being very disoriented she could have swum/helped Az swim in the wrong direction.

I so hope I'm wrong.
