This whole trial has been crazy and so has the judge. Why should the deliberation process be any different?

Hey, Judge! Is there not a SOP? What have you done in prior trials???

I've never heard of prosecution and defense arguing over such nonsense. This judge has no control over his courtroom . Jmo

Who here wants the jury sequestered? Who here thinks the jury knows more about the case and will deliberate based on preconceived notions even though they're not supposed to?

And what would you do if you were on the Jury?

Be honest

Im not sure if it is the Judge this time LaLaw.

I dont think he is lying that the appellate courts (Illinois?) have sent down warnings about this.

It is the "why"..........I dont understand though.

Maybe the courts think if the jury is tired from deliberating too long per day they may come to a wrong decision.

IMO

Someone who may be older might not make it until 11pm at night and be swayed by the temptation to change their verdict because they are tired and just want to go home. jmo

Unless I am not remembering correctly, other trials I have watched, when a decision needed to be made - the judge made it and announced it. Sometimes he would allow discussion but made it clear how he was leaning. This judge wants both sides to argue everylittlething.

I'm worried that if they go home there's going to be some jury tampering...if that hasn't already occurred.

I'm a light sleeper but I never even heard anything for three of the oppossums but the fourth one, Maggie (the female boxer) barked and when I went to open the bedroom door I heard a loud hiss just outside of the door and decided not to open it.

Oh you were home - this happened in the middle of the night? What a nightmare! Did everything turn out okay, that is, are the dogs alright?

Do you think the boxers would like DP or would they smell a big rat?

They appear to be very unprepared. Don't you think someone should have made this decision before they started their deliberations????? It's like first day at school. jmo

I just don't understand why this wasn't addressed before the jurors started deliberating .I also don't understand why the lawyers get a vote about whether or not he should send a note asking the jurors what their preference is .

They all act like this is a new situation .

LIVE UPDATE FROM THE DREW PETERSON TRIAL:

The jurors are now back in the courtroom. Judge Burmila: “It is a long day, and I am going to honor your request and allow you to separate for the evening. However, your deliberations for today are at an end . . . it would be unfair to your collective memories to spend any time dwelling upon what it is that you should talk about when you come together again. Deliberations for today are at an end.” He also warns the jurors that if anyone tries to contact them about this case they are immediately contact law enforcement. “You have a responsibility to me to respond in that fashion.” With that, the jurors are released for the day.

Well, they have been deliberating for over 8 hours at this point, Oceanblueeyes.

OTOH, they may be in the middle of a very important discussion. I know I would hate to be making some very important points and abruptly be told to go home.

IDK. At this point I just don't know what would be best!

As for why, maybe there is a known case whereby a juror changed his/her mind and went with the flow due to being tired.

I am going crazy. I will admit that!

**ETA: I see the new updates! I guess they will be back tomorrow!

Ok I will be honest.

They could let me go home and not have to worry about me breaking my oath.

I also would have done as I was told to do two years ago when selected.

I think 99.9% of jurors take their oaths very seriously and will uphold what they swore they would do. Those that wouldnt dont need to be jurors.

I have been a juror several times and I always did as the Judge instructed me and my fellow jurors. Even in a high profile death penalty case. I would be able to put aside any knowledge that I may have had prior to the trial and only weigh the evidence that came from the witness stand.

It really isnt all that hard either. Long days in court in a long trial are exhausting. All I wanted to do is go home and be with my family and relax until I had to return the next morning.

I think they will be just fine.

IMO

How? At this point we have to trust them. I'm really surprised that hotel rooms weren't arranged for the jury during the time it takes them to reach a verdict. For some reason, that seems strange to me considering it's a national case and all. Just for the purpose of keeping the Jurors close and safe and efficient, etc. :waitasec:

Plus I'd think it would allow them to relax and be alone to think for themselves about everything they collectively covered today.

I would say sequester once the deliberations begin.

When do they come back tomorrow?

  • #597
I think it's totally ridiculous that the judge decided to admonish them today, when he never admonished them through the whole trial. People had commented about this before, and one person stated an ex-juror he knew who was admonished daily by judge complained the jury resented the judge's inference that they were too stupid to know any better....so I will apply that here and now.

And how does HE know what they will be thinking about tonight? Is he psychic, going to come in (late as usual) tomorrow and say "I know what you were thinking....!" It's a little late in the game for him to get so picky with the jury. It's condescending and annoying. But not as annoying as the defense still throwing out objections, which I have NEVER heard of during the deliberation phase of the trial.

The up side is they will get to rest and be refreshed for tomorrow. I imagine(d) they would want to be fresh so they would look and sound alert, smart and confident to deliver a verdict - I guess mid-morning.

On JVM now. Discussion.

I hope the Jury has a good nights sleep. Let their conscience, the facts and testimony lead them to a Guilty Verdict tomorrow. Let the sun only shine for DP through a window of bars for the rest of his life.
