IIRC, the poster stated that they found the gun a year ago, and was just now turning over to LE.
Who the heck finds a gun wrapped in toilet paper in the desert, after chasing a $20 bill, and doesn't think "huh, I should immediately turn this in to police, finding a gun wrapped in toilet paper is surely a normal thing and not suspicious at all!".
The idea that toilet paper would still be there after 4 years is a big enough clue this is a put-on. Desert or not, wispy little toilet paper isn't going to hold up to all that exposure.
