There is VERY little to nothing on this case, agreed.

I had a quick search for any further scarce details and there were none as you say. I did come across the KDC FB page, where every Week they post about one of their Deck of Cards. I found the post relating to this case, posted by KDC, sometime last year. Again, no new or added info. I messaged them on their thread and got this back soon after. A quick response and really nice reply :
The McAtee homicides are the second oldest case in our deck, from 1977. We didn’t have any news articles to include (like some of the others), because there were none to be found. I’m sure there was media coverage of the murders at the time they occurred, but everything has been archived and warehoused and not available on the internet. Even the detective didn’t have anything, not even a photograph. James McAtee was a Ft. Riley soldier and I even worked with the base historian (who didn’t know about this case) to try and find a photograph to use and any additional detail or articles we could include - They had nothing.
James and Diana McAtee were from Ohio and only in Kansas because of military service. The couple was young, just married and recently enlisted James, who was injured in a training accident, was processing out of the Army on a medical discharge. If I recall correctly, he was only 19 when he was murdered. They hadn’t even had a chance to build a life yet or get established in the community.
Other cases that have links to articles and videos aren’t as old as the McAtee case. Most were Kansas residents with family and friends who provided additional information to the media, started private campaigns to find answers and continue to this day to seek justice for their loved ones. I include media links when I can find them (if not behind a paywall) and sadly, there just isn’t anything for the McAtee’s or anyone left of their family to miss them.
Thank you for your comment and understanding.
