"White Privilege Conference" In Colorado?

There is a White Entertainment Network. Look a the TV. Sure the minority representation has improved, but the majority of characters are White and center around the norms of a typical white fmaily. BET was created to give Blacks the opportunity to see shows containing a majority of people that they can relate to. The majority of the programming on BET stinks IMO, because the movies and shows are mostly B rated since the funding is not available to create a great movie or program with a minority cast.

White People Awards - the the major awards categories were created for White people. Look how long it has taken for a Black, Latino, Asian, Indian, etc. person to win a presitgious award? It's 2007 and there are a handful. When one is shut out of the "club" for so long wouldn't it be easier to create your own?

On Black History Month - I am 34 years old. I just learned about Sojourner Truth 4 years ago! I learn about Black History when my girls come home and talk about what they did during Black History month. I didn't learn much about it at my school.

I am glad that my kids are being exposed to various races and cultures. I think understanding each other and where we come from will lead to a brighter future for our children in terms of getting along a coexisting peacefully. It's those of us that are in denial that there is a problem and want to brush it under the rug or pass things of as minorities feeling a sense of entitlement. There are minority people who experience blatant racism or subtle racism. I could rattle of several things I have experienced and to someone who doesn't believe there is a problem, would never see it as a problem.

I don't feel entitled at all. I am a single parent. I work full time. I go to college. I participate in my children's social and educational endeavors, I consider myself kind, compassionate and smart. I play well with others. I have worked hard for the little that I have. I just expect to be treated fairly and equally.
     Great post, Luv!

You could be right, maybe they admit whites, I don't know and I will say it again, I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE, but what I do know is that I graduated just a few short years ago, and before we graduated we had college day, where college recruiters came and stood up one by one, talked to us about their colleges, programs, etc. and the Spelman recruiters pointed out that they were a black college, they never said anything about admitting whites.
Why, if they admit whites, and obviously whites would be the minority there, isn't affirmative action used at these schools?

Spelman
2006-2007 Freshman Enrollment Data
  • 556 Black
  • 13 Other
2005-2006 Freshman Enrollment Data
  • 487 Black
  • 44 Other

Morehouse
2003 Freshman Enrollment Data (couldn't find current data)
  • 2695 Black
  • 101 Alien
  • 4 American Indian
  • 8 Hispanic
  • 5 White
  • 71 Undeclared

Since these are the only 2 predominately Black private colleges out of the hundreds of private colleges across the US, I am sure you could reverse the numbers of the Blacks and Whites and apply them to the other private colleges and that would be an informal representation of the small Black population at private colleges over all.

Morehouse and Spelman are only 2 private colleges with a predominately Black population and they do not exclude other races. This number is minute compared to all of the college choices available in the U.S.

What does that mean?

I do care about furthering my knowledge, but I don't care about these colleges really, or how they were founded. That doesn't necessarily make me a bad person. I just have no interest in it (and I know that's now what you're saying either). I was just curious what information you think you may glean about me as a person by a statement I made.

LOL, was it wrong to laugh at this? Little green men.

Gotcha. Actually that was what I mean - on this particular subject and I apologize for not adding that.

No problem. I meant to say "not" what you're saying...instead of "now" what you're saying.

LOL. And I meant to write meant and not "mean." I have worked close to 80 hours this week and my brain is shortcircuiting as I type this.

I don't believe Masterj was opining on interest in black colleges in general. (It's not a special focus of mine either, I readily admit.)

Masterj said the lack of interest was telling in a poster who brought up the subject of these colleges in the first place.

Producing an erroneous fact to support one's argument and then announcing one has "no interest" in having the fact corrected is very telling indeed. But as far as I know, that has nothing to do with you.

(ETA: Sorry. Obviously, ya'll worked this one out without my help. Imagine that! :loser:)

It's Friday, we're all loopy from the long work week and happy that the weekend is almost here!

It doesn't matter to me, and I have a right to say that, just as you do to say that it does matter to you.

It doesn't mattter to you, but you bring them up as schools that are exclusive to Blacks. That is not true.

The reason these two school were started is important to the conversation because if minorities were educated equally and with out prejudice there would have been no need and continued need for the schools.

Boy, I can remember that I hated being different growing up. I can see it was a blessing in disguise because I grew up seeing the good, bad and the ugly of both races and am able to now integrate somewhat successfuly into both cultures as an adult. Being able to see both sides of the coin is a benefit I never realized as a child.

I don't know if they give admission preferences to non-blacks, but here's an explanation as to why it doesn't matter:

http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/affirmative-action/

It matters to me that if admission preferences can be given to blacks, it should also extend to whites.
But Nova, I will let the affirmative action issue drop right now because I am much too heated up to read the article at the moment and therefore I won't be able to accurately respond to it.
I think it may be best if I take a breather from this whole issue for a little bit before I get too out of hand, as I very easily do at times.

I also stated in a post right after that that I didn't know for sure that the schools were exclusively black. I am willing to admit when I am wrong and I did that, thank you.

Masterj and I worked it out. Thanks.

And without your help. Imagine that.

Did you literally type the exact words as I was adding them to my post above? (Except you used a kinder emoticon, of course.)

That is scary. I don't know we like each other well enough to be "say things at the same time" friends, do you? ;)
