Never mind . . . Missie's is the only one that raised your opinion "to the roof". <snicker, snort> . . . my bad.

Actually I don't see any questions that were asked of me but thank you for your concern. :D

When my daughter and son in law were coming up from South Carolina for a visit...way back when the speed limit was 55, they had cars passing them doing 60-65...but son in law is a slowpoke anyway. They had a black cop pull them over after following them for 3 miles, and got a ticket for doing 57 in a 55 ( yes, cruise was set on 57, and it is "over 55") but the black cop also made the remark that southerners didn't know how to obey the laws. It's been many years, and I am still burned up about it. So I don't buy into that "driving while black" crap.

Not concerned in the least however, you may want to vist your eye doctor. :D

When I was a teen I marched for equality. It caused a lot of problems in my family but I just couldn't understand why someone was kept at the back of the bus, or not allowed to vote, or live where they could afford to, just like I could. After all, we were all Americans...right? I still can't figure why we are still looking at things that happened over 100 years ago. I suspect that some of it has to do with the media and politics. Someone must be the victim. Your gov. will then come in and save you, protect you, and justify your vote. Now that I'm in my late 50s I can see that there have been improvements made in this area, not enough but it is better. When we all get over the feeling we are victims and own our society we should do better yet. On Sept 11 they were not after killing white or black people, they wanted to kill Americans.

Equality here in the US is more about education. If you want to "move up" you need to make sure you are attending a good school. You should be making sure that your kids are attending a good school. And yet the big men in DC who can send their kids to a great school withhold vouchers so you can't have the same choices they have.

Sorry but I just wish everyone wasn't so much in a hurry to find reasons to keep us apart in stead of seeing ways for us to work together. I'm glad to see discussions like this since the more we talk the more we can find common ground.

Bravo!!!   Bravo!!

And I PRAY for the same. :blowkiss:

BTW Supi . . . why on Godsgreenearth are you sorry for wishing this? Silly you.

A Black Man makes more than a White Woman. Your AGE and type of car is why you are pulled over. I have seen black workers get away with poor behavior while white workers are scrutinized. I really think that everything should be EQUAL. The color of your skin shouldn't matter. If you're speeding, you should be pulled over regardless of your age, your race, your car, etc. Everyone with the same education or experience level should make the same money. Unfortunately, black people are no longer the real oppressed minority. Whites oppressed blacks. Blacks now oppress Latinos, who oppress Mexicans... See the problem? Things like that happen to everyone, not just black people!
I hope I am not sounding prejudiced here, because I am NOT, but I do feel that things like racism and stereotyping are a part of every racial group, but I feel like it is mostly seen as something that us white people do to others.
And things like them calling the conference "White Privelege" only adds more gas to the fire.>>

And I think you'll find that question is too.
Not sure if you know what rhetorical means but just in case you don't:
<<a rhetorical question is one asked solely to produce an effect (especially to make an assertion) rather than to elicit a reply">>

Sooo, if you are waiting for a reply from Mastrj, you are going to be waiting a while because I think she knows a rhetorical question when she sees one.

DWB--Driving While Black...yes it does exist, I've seen it over and over again.

Tell me...how do we break these painfully accurate stereotypes?? I guess it's okay for white kids to drive mercedes, and have gold teeth and chains. What... is assumed their parents paid for it because their white??? I know many with gold teeth, nice houses, and more expensive cars than mercedes...and oh wow their black and they actually work.

I would imagine many who fought for civil rights are heartbroken....here it is 40 years later and people are still judged by the color of their skin...very sad indeed.

Yep, racism is still alive and well.

Why do we have to assume that they were pulled over simply because they were black?
Isn't this kind of the same assumption as saying that just because we're white we're priveleged?

Because my husband drives a BMW and gets pulled over at least once a month, Stupid stuff...2 miles over the speed limit..etc. Do you know what the first question is.....Who's car are you driving??? My cousin's husband drives a hummer....do you know how many times he's been pulled over??? Like I said DWB exists...

When i was in high school we had a tri-state conference on racism...the whole thing was based around this woman who said that whites are the only ones who are racist and it CAN NOT be the other way around! WTF?? She divided us up into two groups - blue eyed and brown eyed - the brown eyed kids got all the privileges and the blue eyed kids were pretty much treated like crap. The blue eyed kids were supposed to realize how blacks felt. Sadly, it didn't have much affect on us because I think all of us have been treated in a racist way at some point in our lives, regardless of race. It's all about FEAR. It's not just a color that is the difference. Whites and blacks live in different cultures - I don't understand the black culture except what I see on tv or music videos because I live in a very rural town with no minorities - so I guess I only have stereotypes to go on because I know that not every black person is THAT stereotype - same way with whites, latinos, asians, laotians, etc.....I try to EMBRACE other peoples differences, not fear them but sometimes it is hard. There are times when I am almost overly nice to other races because I am afraid they think I'm a snotty white girl and I want them to know that is not the case. Is that wrong? Everyone says we are supposed to be colorblind, but that is not possible, folks - we just need to accept that there are different people and when you break down that initial wall of FEAR , we are very similar.....

And can you imagine a "White Entertainment Network?" Or how about "White Week" in our public schools.

My husband went to a sporting event with our son recently. They were at the snack area waiting for their order. Part of it wasn't ready so the woman told him to wait off to the side. Finally, after a few minutes, he went to the counter and asked about his order and the woman made a loud and rude comment to him. She said all you white people are so demanding and added in a few other comments. The next day he called the front office, and told them. They about died. And they agreed, had the tables been turned and had he been black, and that comment had been made...it would have been all over the news and the NAACP would have been involved.

I am just sick of all this. But mostly, I am sadened for my black friends. They work hard and contribute to society daily, and yet, because of the actions of these people, they are being shoved back a couple of generations. If I were a hard-working black person...I'd be pi**ed at what's going on these days.

Or what about White History Month???

No, it's not all black people and that is what is really sad. The ones that are crying "injustice" are the ones who have been taught that they are owned because of the past. My hubby worked with a black guy (who is very nice, they have a son our daughter's age and will come to our parties and vice versa) but when things didn't go his way at work he would pull the racist card. I told my hubby that even though we're friends with them that he better watch what he does. This guy would turn on you in a heartbeat. Now, I work with a lot of black people and none of them complain or threaten racism. Yes, we all sit and complain about our jobs but none of them ever once blamed where they are on white people.

Sorry but I disagree... I am white female and at the time drove a little sports coup (Saturn so not even an expensive one) and when I got pulled over I got asked who's car it was and what was I doing in this town (a town near where I lived visiting friends) and why I was out this late. So I guess if DWB exists, then so does DWW.....

I think part of it is the kind of car you are driving - my friend used to own a bright canary yellow firebird that her dad rebuilt for her - she is a white girl and ALWAYS got pulled over in that car - we got to the point where we didn't want to ride with her because we knew it was going to be trouble!

I went to the University of Florida. I work with blacks, whites, Indians and some people that I have no idea what they are labeled, but it doesn't matter. We are all paid according to our position - and since it's computers, the positions are pretty much given to who can perform. It's not often the white guys. We're all paid (men, women, whatever race) based on what we put out. The State is the BIGGEST employer in this area - so if "blacks are paid less than whites" it's situational, not racial around here. (My bosses are both black, they make more because they DO more.) I could make more than them if I was willing to put forth the effort they do - but being white would not help me.

ANYWAY - my college alumni has a hispanic alumni club and a black alumni club. There is no white alumni club. Why not? White people went to college there, too.

Stupid racial issues need to go the FREAK AWAY because it should be a non issue anymore - if people would stop pretending to be offended based on color of herd of sheep and start being INDIVIDUALS, it would help!

If you WANT to be part of a herd of sheep - of any label - at least get your numbers together and abolish the death penalty, or rebuild homes for hurricane victims, or feed the homeless in the name of your race - not riot, overwhelm foodstamp offices and pop out babies like you don't know how to cross your legs. Don't put on sheets and light crosses, don't form gangs and kill people over the hat they wear, don't look like thugs with your pants hanging off of you and speak in such slaughtered english that you look like an idiot - and if you DO wear 🤬🤬🤬🤬 clothing - do it when you volunteer at daycare centers, or the big dog rescue center or help little old ladies their cars with their groceries. If you want to be a group - black, white, hispanic, gang related, whatever - be a group that makes a POSITIVE difference. It's the groups of rioting blacks, sheet wearing whites, knife weilding hispanics, bombing muslims - that people see in the media and fuels this whole racial thing. It's the invididuals that act the fool like a white kid using the N word, or a black kid robbing a store, too - if you are proud of your race - use that pride for some GOOD.

Argh. I was raised racist in a racist household. Not a major concern, just now and then a comment. I TRIED so hard to overcome it, but I have only been able to overcome it through indivuduals like my boss, who is bright, smart and hardworking - like a coworker who is as much a goof off as I am, but he's nice and a genuinely good person. The large group of blacks that swarmed my car and beat on it when I accidently got lost in a "bad neighborhood" once - they didn't help matters. The large group of gold wearing, cellphone carrying, STRONG, HEALTHY blacks that broke into line for foodstamps during the 3 months stint I was on them after my divorce - they didn't help matters.

How can you stop being racist when people won't stop acting stereotypical? I can SEE why blacks are racist. I can SEE why whites are racist. I can SEE why muslims are discriminated against.

When I stop SEEING REASONS for racism, perhaps I will stop seeing racism.

Go Individuals! Go groups who do good things! Wheeee!

PS
I practice what I preach to my daughter. We don't discuss race at ALL. Our issue is still discrimination though. She dresses gothic. Chains, black clothing, red dyed hair - she looks like she should be feared. I told her she is allowed to wear what she wants, but she needs to do two things for the privledge....
1. If she is accused of stealing things, or being a bad person - she can't cry to me - it's the clothes talking to the ignorant.
2. SHE HAS TO MAKE THOSE CLOTHES LOOK GOOD!

Yes, in those clothes, she entertains babies and small children in waiting rooms of doctor's offices, or picks up dropped toys while shopping. She has assisted lost kids, returned lost pets, volunteered at dog washes for the humane society, given free computer lessons to underprivledged kids that received donated computers. She is in the math club, she is in the computer and robotics clubs. She wears those clothes to church (yes!) and when she is out with her friends she keeps them in line - to make people SEE that large groups of gothic kids aren't necessarily bad kids - they just LOOK different.

I don't mention race to her - but the issue of making your large group socially acceptable translates to race, religeon, national origin, sex, group affiliation of ALL kinds. It's NOT about race, people! It's about WHO YOU ARE.

Thank you. Now back to your regularly scheduled posting. :-)

Kudos Glitch.... Wonderful post!!!!!!!!!!

The concept of "White Privilege" is important to understand and address in this day and age when so many continue to deny its existence. Since the Civil Rights Movement, although there have been tremendous advances, racism has simply gone underground. It is now covert racism instead of overt racism. The covert form can be even more destructive than the overt form since it makes it easier to deny it exists. If you are white and you do not think you automatically receive special privileges based on your "white" status, you might try to look at it from another perspective.

This essay by Peggy McIntosh is a classic in the dialogue on this topic. It takes you beyond the individual acts of racism that are dwelt on in many of the posts on this thread and analyzes the SOCIAL SYSTEM of dominance and power in Western society.
"White Privilege: Unpacking the Invisible Knapsack"

And also I have to ask isn't this pretty much telling all the black students who will be attending the conference that no matter what they do, what college they go to, what grades they get, it's going to be harder for them to get a job than for a white person?
What a way to promote self-confidence in our schools!

So, we are supposed to protect them from the truth? How is THAT going to help their self-confidence?

"White privilege" is not about racism or racist acts. It is about the organization of our society and the differential access to wealth, power, and authority.

What is this world coming to seriously? I have soo had it with this race card crap-

what about the NAACP, BET, Black awards shows, the fact that if a black man and a white man apply for the same job and it makes no difference who is actually more 'qualified' for the position that the black man gets the job because he is black. That scholorships are awarded in the same way. What about white kids who can't afford a college education? Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton .....can't people see that all these things actually keep DEVIDING people more and more-they want to stop racism but they are actually encouraging it- reverse racism is what it is. For goodness sakes this must just STOP.

You can't make a racial comment against blacks without getting fired, or it becoming national news but if a black person were to make a comment then it would be PRAISED by the likes of Jackson and Sharpton and everyone would rally around it . We have become so AFRAID not to offend anyone anymore that no one can even speak their mind anymore and I am sick of it!

So here goes- rappers that wear gold chains and gold teeth talking about Ho's and gang activity and popping caps in people's a$$'s are stupid and wrecking our youth. Their slang culture is destroying our language. And if they really want to get an education and not be oppressed then they need to pull up their pants, learn and speak the english language, stop selling drugs and stay in school. The WHITIES did not put them in their selected life choices.

THERE.
