WI - 35W bridge in Minneapolis collapses!

  • #601
In all, 88 vehicles have been located, both in the river and amid the broken concrete wreckage of the bridge, according to the State Patrol.
I just read the updated articles, and now it's making more sense than the original estimated amount of cars in the river and under the collapsed bridge. This new number is more consistent with "rush hour" and thankfully not higher.

Eighth Bridge Victim Thought Found

MINNEAPOLIS (Aug. 9) - Remains pulled from the wreckage of a collapsed bridge on Thursday may include another victim along with the two earlier announced, which would bring the confirmed death toll to eight, authorities said.

Navy divers had recovered human remains at first believed to be those of two bodies. At a news conference, Hennepin County Chief Medical Examiner Andrew Baker said what was thought to be one set of remains is now believed to be from more than one person.

The first victim recovered Thursday was identified as Peter Joseph Hausmann, 47, of Rosemount.

Baker said that authorities believe they know the identities of the other two people, and that they were on the list of missing in the Aug. 1 collapse. They were not immediately identified.

They have found 2 year old Hana Mohamed. God rest her tiny little soul. I hope she had no idea what was happening. :(
It's so sad, but at least she and her mother were together. It also says the mother may have been pregnant ~

"Hana Sahal was in a car with her mother, Sadiya Sahal, 22 -- a nursing student from Somalia -- when it plunged into the Mississippi River, said Omar Jamal, a spokesman for the family.

Sadiya Sahal died of blunt-force and penetrating abdominal injuries, according to the medical examiner's office.

She was reportedly five months pregnant, but CNN has not confirmed that."

I think with this bridge collapsing, its size & the number of cars on it at any given time, let alone rush hour- it is a true MIRACLE there are at this point only 8 confirmed deaths-- I am sure there will be more remains found- but it still is a blessing that at this point- the number is this low

Here's another article about the recovery yesterday, but what's really interesting is to scroll down the page to an illustration ("Faulty Plates Prompt Warning") of what could've been the problem with the bridge ~

What happened to the Sahal family is a true tragedy. They sound as if they were working so hard to make a life for themselves and their little daughter. Getting their education, holding down jobs, becoming citizens. My heart goes out to this husband and father.

I'm watching another discussion on the bridge collapse this morning, and they are wondering if this collapse is enough to trigger a shift in our (nation's) priorities. They figure it will take $188 billion to fix our bridge problems. I think it will take much, much, more, especially considering all of our antiquated crumbling infrastructure in our country.

Our present priority is Iraq and Afghanistan at the cost of $15 billion per month. This $15 billion per month doesn't consider, or include, the replacement of National Guard, and U.S. Military equipment, nor does it consider the long term care of our injured, and handicapped soldiers, many with brain injury.

They spoke of much of our gas tax highway money, up to 40%, being used for pet projects, restoring unused lighhthouses, bridges to nowhere, etc.

It isn't about raising taxes, as much as it is about, shifting priorities on the way our tax money is presently spent.

Weather hampers recovery efforts at collapsed bridge

MINNEAPOLIS -- Divers looking for five people still missing since the collapse of the Interstate 35W bridge were hampered yesterday because heavy rain strengthened the current in the Mississippi River.

Overnight thunderstorms dropped as much as 50 mm of rain on the region, making the river dangerous for divers around the twisted bridge wreckage, a navy spokesman said.

They were back in the water by 11 a.m., but co-ordinators had a wary eye on the skies, with more storms possible. "If they feel they're not safe anymore or conditions change, they'll stop again," said Randy Mitchell, an army spokesman working with the navy team. If conditions hold, he said divers would probably work late into the night.

"We will go back in after the divers have assessed that it's safe enough to go back in," said navy spokesman Dave Nagle.
