Lucky seven, good theory you have there! I will look into the Kemmerly too and see if I can find any other possibilities.

Jack Kemmerly owned and operated Kemmerly real estate company until he retired several years ago. They used to advertise all over Chicago and surrounding suburbs.

Let me dig for what I was able to find out about John Deeny.

Just had a thought; I've probably stated this before but... I wonder if JD's family DOES know that he died in the accident, but does not want to come forward. There are several reasons why this could be.

One reason is that sometimes when people die, the family cannot afford the burial or ceremony. Another is that they just didn't care because maybe he stole from his family too many times and they were done with him.

Also, maybe his family knows that he died, but they were threatened not to tell anyone. Why? Well, he was living a bad boy lifestyle. He was probably involved with some bad company. If JD were to be identified, then perhaps so would his accomplice(s), if there were any.

I'm more leaning towards that he was just a criminal transient who was estranged from his family. But I just wanted to throw this theory out there.

I went back and read my old posts on the Bernard Bunny Ross postings, and I realized that I did state those theories before on here. Anyway, the more I think about it, it sounds logical that IF he was involved in a gang, I doubt anyone would want to be that "informant". IF he was in a gang, his gang mates already likely know he is deceased, but they won't come forward. (By now they'd be in their 60's+, and they may not even be in a gang anymore.) JD may have also been in some sort of mob. I checked online for missing fugitives years ago but had no good results. This all leads me back to my original theory: that this case WILL be solved if it is put on the news. I am pretty confident in that. Why won't the news stations pick it up? I've contacted them all. I'm re-contacting them all again, as well. I've blasted their Facebook pages, but I think if JD gets national tv cable air time, someone will recognize him and call him. BUT we are running out of time. His family, if any is left, would likely be in their 60's (siblings, cousins, etc.), and if he has parents alive, they'd be in their 80's, 90's, etc. His parents are likely deceased, but you never know. He may have a brother or sister alive, or cousins / friends. But the longer the news waits to broadcast his story, the older these friends/ relatives will get. The older they get, the more their memory fades, and the more people become deceased.

JD's close-cropped hair... it keeps me coming back to the idea that he was associated with LE or some sort of military group. Most men had longer hair in the 70s. While not necessarily ponytail-long but definitely shaggy... even "clean-cut" guys appeared a bit shaggy. If he served in the US Armed Forces I would assume his fingerprints would be on file and further assume this was checked/ruled out (do we know for certain??). If he wasn't in the US military, then could he have had some association with St. John's Northwestern Military Academy? Or maybe another military school in the area? Maybe he was an employee... groundskeeper, cafeteria worker? Was there a residential military type school (for children without any family) that he could have attended in his youth and then remained there as an employee?

Also, September 13, 1977 was a Tuesday. While stealing an automobile can occur any day of the week, somehow Tuesday (or early Wed am) seems rather mundane. I believe I did find there was a White Sox game in Chicago that evening. And, it appears Kemmerly Real Estate held classes most Tuesday and Thursday evenings.

Maybe this has been established, but I found that there was a "Johnnys Mobile Home Sales" located at 2811 Mannheim Rd in Des Plaines.

Just came here to say this case is fascinating - also, upon my reviewing the photos on NAMUS, his handwriting looks reminiscent of someone who may have been born and raised in eastern Europe. In my humble opinion, American handwriting is often softer and more rounded. Also, it is apparent he can't spell (I'm not sure he meant "no hiring dine here" - rather "now hiring diner")... I'll go back through this thread for other opinions on the matter.

I believe he's written "no hiring done here" in reference to the employment office written above it - meaning no actual hiring is done at the employment office.

I'm glad he's being exhumed to get his DNA. Hopefully, this will be the year we will be able to give him back his name.

New member here. I've been reading the forums for quite awhile, but just recently registered. This is one of the cases I've tried to keep an eye on for the last few years. It's fascinating. I've tried to post a few times but it won't go through for some reason, so I'm gonna keep it short. I must be doing something wrong. Will post more once I'm sure this will work.

I forgot to subscribe to the thread. No wonder I couldn't post. lol Ok, at least that problem is solved.

This is probably meaningless because LE seems to be pretty sure they know where he got those clothes. When I looked at the photo of his jacket it had that gray lining that went onto the collar. That looks a lot like something called borgana. Borgana was this fake fur like stuff they used to line coats etc. It was made in Wisconsin. I had family that worked there so lots of samples were brought home over the years and used for blankets and pillows etc etc. The way that fur separates on the collar looks so familiar. I would be willing to bet money its borgana.

So many strange things about this. Conflicting things. Right now I think I would agree with a lot of you guys and say that he got out of jail down there, but at times I've also thought he was from up here in Wisconsin and went down to look for work and somehow couldn't get back....too late for a bus...or a train and he stole a car. I don't know. I just get this feeling that he was trying to go straight and find a normal job but something happened unplanned and he ended up taking that car. I agree he probably knew the car was easy to steal. I know someone with an old Camaro and you can start it with a screw driver in the ignition....some sort of flaw where anything stuck in there will work...Like another poster said. Stick shifts are super easy...just pop the clutch....

This may not be important or it may have been said already, but I just wanted to mention that Lauri is often a male's name. Even if this one is/was male, I guess it won't help much in identifying the UID.

MOO

You're right Confusion. Lauri can be a male name. I never knew that. Finnish for Laurence. That's interesting.

This is really sad :( it's so sad that this guy ended up like this :( even though he was breaking the law and was making the wrong choices he didn't deserve to die without a name :(
I live in Waukesha County Wisconsin. Delafield is only 20 minutes away from me. I'm going to visit his grave when I get the chance.
I'd think that he might be from Chicago or Indianapolis. I'd try checking juvenile detention center records around those areas too.
