WI - Madison, school shooting at Abundant Life Christian School 16 Dec 2024

Maybe she wore that shirt because she liked the band KMFDM. There is nothing controversial about the shirt or the band. Yes, a Columbine shooter liked them too, but so do I, and so do tons of people around the world. I wear their shirt too, and I am a law-abiding, 48-year-old high school teacher and happily married father of 6 wonderful children. Should I not be wearing their shirt either? KMFDM have been around for 4 decades and just played a show in Milwaukee on their tour a couple months ago. Maybe she was there, who knows? I have seen Alice Cooper live too. Did you know he is a church-going Christian man and a very kind person? His music may be dark, but it is art.

Sorry, but the fault lies with the shooter, as she made the decision to kill people. We can't blame a band or even her parents or the school at this point. We will likely learn more about her parents, but they ultimately did not do the crime. A school can only vet so much due to privacy laws. If she had a clean record, there might not have been anything to uncover. I feel awful for this girl, as a father of five daughters, including two teenagers, and whatever happened in her life for her to make this rash decision at such a young age, but the blame lies squarely with her. Feel free to refute me, but those are my opinions.
I attended a private Christian School for High School. It was very, very strict. There is no way that you could wear a t-shirt with any words on it. You would have to go home and change clothes.

I attended a private Christian School for high school. I can tell you that some of the students were put there due to them being in trouble. Some of them were even on parole. Parents figured they could get straightened out by putting them into a strict school.

It is so sad to me, that we are teaching five year old children how to respond in case of active shooters in school.

My heart goes out to the victims and their families. So difficult this time of year. Their "anniversary" will always remind them of Christmas.
I agree. I don't know what "active shooter drills" will do to the pyche of young children.
You reminded me of something we did when I was in grade school (many moons ago). We had an air raid siren in town. (grew up near several aircraft facilities and a huge airforce base) It was VERY loud and once a month it would go off and we had to crawl under our desks.
It didn't scare me as a child but as an adult I look back and think "What would a tiny desks have done to protect us".
Maybe children today look at Active shooter drills like I did with the air raid siren. Perhaps to them it's just "what we do", kind of like my crawling under my desk.

OMG, I lived within two miles of Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and I remember very well going through a training session on if you hear the siren, to get under your desk.

Don't most gun safes have combination locks?
They can have both.

Modern combination locks are often battery driven. But as people often forget to change batteries- or they forget the combination, keys are often provided as a back up. One can then open the safe with either the combination, or a key.

That happens in private and public schools. My husband teaches in a public HS, and students who were problems were sent from their old district into the one he teaches for, and into his school. The problems followed, for the most part. It's been rough.
IMO.

We also could talk to one another. Thanks to social media the younger generations have terrible communication skills. I am glad I grew up when there were no computers, cell phones or social media. We spent a lot of time outside. Did we always get along? NO! But we never resorted to killing others. Ethics , values and respect for human life are waning. Kids need to get out of the house and away from all electronics.
While the manifesto has not been confirmed to be authentic yet, I too believe unlimited access to the internet/social media to be a major issue. There are dark places on the web that kids can find, and who knows who is behind the accounts that they interact with. Yes, school shootings still happened when we were young, but we didn’t have the ability to research and study and glorify these acts (at least not so easily or from the comfort/privacy of our home). It’s not too hard to imagine a teenager being influenced by the things they learn about online and making terrible/violent decisions based on that. Don’t forget to add the cruelty and façades of social media into the mix. The gun debate is the gun debate, but there are also other factors that can and should be addressed. MOO.

The strictness of the dress code depends on the school, although I couldn't imagine any Christian school, even the most liberal ones, allowing a t-shirt for a band like KMFDM. Maybe she wore it under her clothes?

This hits home hard for me. Not only is this local, I grew up in Madison attending private schools with 250+ kids in the school K-8. I know first hand, there is a lot of pressure at these schools for kids that are having a hard home life. Not saying this was the case or that it’s an excuse, just my own first thoughts.

My thoughts, prayers and support for everyone who has been impacted by this horrible tragedy, are endless. Madison will get through this and I hope we can inch closer to making a change one day.

Opening Gun Containers? Reliability of Gun Safes? A 3 Yr Old?
Don't most gun safes have combination locks?
@airportwoman :) I wondered about that too.
Using Google w amazon.com & searching
"gun vault gun safe gun cabinet," I got 10 bajillion products and cannot tell if "most" of them had combo locks.

These may be opened in one or more multiple ways:
-Biometric (like fingerprint, some can take 20 diff prints. If any by iris scan, I missed them).
- PIN (like w number pads on ATMs, so essentially a combo lock, like on oldies w "dials" but these are electronic).
- Key.
- Smart phone Apps opening w a tap to container, some even remote.
Holy cow, noticed some containers allow access all 4 ^ ways, and I may have missed other access methods.
Some record data about times of use, ID of users, yada yada.

For $ 99.99, an Amazon Prime subscriber pressing the "Buy It Now" button, can have a gun safe w capacity for 2-4 handguns, w security cable included,* delivered to doorstep in two days.
Yep, w access all the ^ four ways (Glad that buying handguns is not so simple & cheap).

From skimming the amazon results, seems easy enough & inexpensive, but scroll down in this wiki** to the section re US.
Some safes (purportedly "DoJ approved" to California DoJ safety standards) turned out to be Not-So-Reliable against ne'er-do-wells or the curious, per results of independent testing as written up in Forbes:
:( "Unsafe Gun Safes Can Be Opened by a Three Year Old" :( Article said re the CA. "DoJ approved" safes:
"... all eleven models could be opened with one of a variety of simple implements and techniques, including bouncing and rapping, or insertion of paperclips, wires, drinking straws, screwdrivers, or brass strips that can be purchased from a hardware store. Four of the models were unlocked by a three-year-old child."

NOT commenting or editorializing about gun control. Just wondering how RELIABLE some of these gun containers in deterring access to handguns. Nothing can be 100% certain w these products, but that does not excuse owners from taking STEPS to PREVENT unwanted or inappropriate access to guns.

imo That ends my TED Talk for the day. ;)
