A Wisconsin hospice nurse has been charged with amputating the frostbitten foot of a dying man without his permission in order to preserve it for a sick display in her family’s taxidermy shop.

Mary K. Brown, 38, allegedly hacked off the victim’s right foot — without his OK or a doctor’s permission on May 27 — and told a fellow nurse she intended to exhibit it with a sign saying “wear your boots, kids,” according to a criminal complaint obtained by WQOW.

A nurse who was present when Brown allegedly chopped off the man’s foot on May 27 reported that the patient clenched her hand tightly and was moaning during the procedure, the complaint states.

Following the amputation, the man told another nurse that he had felt everything and was in agonizing pain, according to the court document.

Brown, of Durand, was charged with physical abuse of an elder person – intentionally causing great bodily harm, and mayhem. She is expected to appear in court on Dec. 6, the local outlet reported.

If convicted, each charge carries a maximum sentence of 40 years in prison.

What the heck are the charges for the other nurse, who apparently stood by and watched this sadistic woman mutilate a sick, vulnerable man who was dependent on her care?!

Some hospice care. That poor unfortunate man. :(

This is sickening!!! Some people in positions to care for others can be so sadistic, who was this woman who stood by and watched it go on!? Both are culpable IMO

Maybe someone should take a closer look at that "taxidermy" shop?

I’m sorry……WHAT?????

That's it, I give up, I have now officially lost all faith in human nature.

Someone tell me this is some sort of dark parody and not a real event.

The whole thing is horrific but somehow another nurse not stopping it and immediately calling police is the worst part to me. I also think she should be charged!

This article has a slightly different take on this, which I'm more inclined to believe over NYPost. Still horrifying.

Some of Brown’s coworkers told investigators they had witnessed the man’s foot still attached to his body by several inches of tissue on the morning of May 27, then that night, Brown fully amputated his foot.

It is unknown if the amputation caused the man pain or not, as nurses interviewed by authorities produced varying accounts of the incident.

The complaint goes on to say some nurses believed Brown wanted to take the amputated foot home and preserve it, as she had spoken about taxidermy before. Several nurses said Brown wanted to display the preserved foot with a sign that would read, “Wear your boots kids.”

A nursing home administrator told investigators although he instructed Brown not to amputate the man’s foot, he believed a doctor would have ordered the procedure, and it seemed like Brown did it for the patient’s comfort and dignity.

Sbm.
What the actual -- is happening in this place?!!
This logic is absolutely bonkers. If they believed a doctor would order this poor patient's dangling foot to be fully amputated, maybe they should have consulted... um... an actual DOCTOR?
God only knows what other unimaginable and inhumane things *could* be happening in this facility imo

Edit: also, nothing screams honouring a patients dignity like displaying their foot for all to see with a cheeky sign... /s

How does this happen? Wouldn't that kind of surgery require some sort of approvals?

god this is horrible, nobody cares if the man was already dying, this sadistic woman just hacked it off, was there any cameras in the room the day it happened? this is some information we need to know

and what actual hospital did this mess take place in

  • #16
As an RN, I have found toes and parts that self-amputated due to disease processes and a terminal condition. But next would be calling the doctor, administering pain medication, etc. Taxidermy of people?? No.

Hospice could possibly mean the person was dying at home. Some locations actually have hospice facilities in the US, but not many.

And no local pain anesthetic? my mom is in a memory care unit in Florida and I can attest I’ve seen some disgusting behaviors from overworked, underpaid carers but this is just… I don’t even know a word to say what this is.. I hope if this is true in any way shape or form she gets the maximum!
