Found Alive WI - Ryan Borgwardt, 45, Green Lake, 11 Aug 2024 *evidence that he faked his death and is alive in Eastern Europe*

I disagree that LE ever believed they had a good reason to feel sorry for RB! We know that he lied to the woman that he was widowed, and that LE first contacted RB through the woman. IMO, she very much cooperated with LE and facilitated their contact with him.
Can you please link the source where it is atated that he told he was widowed ?

I’m trying to figure out where PE got his info on the side piece? I’ve been staying on top of this story but I haven’t found much info on the lady other thank she was Uzbek and spoke Russian.
Mike King is a consulting criminal investigator who spent decades as a LE officer, Investigator for the Attorney General's Office, and more. In other words, he has access to much inside information and a trusted, reliable source here at WS. MOO

Executive Director for the Coalition Against Insurance Fraud Michelle Rafeld told USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin that while she doesn’t know the “missing kayaker’s” motive for staging his disappearance, it is very uncommon for anyone to do so for an insurance claim.

“While the idea of faking one’s death for insurance money is something people hear about in movies or news stories, in reality, it’s extremely rare, and often comes to light after an investigation is launched due to suspicious circumstances,” Rafeld explained.
..
Borgwardt’s immediate family were the beneficiaries, but they never tried to cash out the claim. Borgwardt has not been charged in court for anything related to the insurance policy.

Not certain if this has been posted; next court date is Jan 13.

“Borgwardt is scheduled to return to court Jan. 13 for his second appearance.”

“He does face a possible nine-month prison sentence and a $10,000 fine after being charged with a Class A misdemeanor of obstructing an officer for intentionally planting evidence to mislead law enforcement.”

RB was apparently told to remember his family, influencing his return, but it took him long enough - 4 months. Quite a long time to consider loved ones unless he ran out of money.

Bets are he didn't know about the possible prison sentence and fine. Sounded like he was an independent cabinet maker. Like who's going to hire him? As to jail time and a fine, he needs jail time to think more about what he did and how he's going to pay his fine.

I’m surprised by all of the assumptions that the woman must be a scammer who lured poor little RB and knowingly forced him to spend thousands of dollars that his wife and children were relying on. I would argue that type of speculation is exactly what LE is referring to when they say they are worried for her.

As a woman who is familiar with dating in one’s 30s, I can safely say that RB would not be the only married man to strategically avoid mentioning his wife and children to his girlfriend. We know for a fact that he is willing to go to extreme lengths to deceive his own family, all we know about this woman is that she’s from a former Soviet republic. If I had to guess one of them was probably not telling the whole truth, I know who I’m going with.

Agreed. I think there is a reputation (deserved or not) of women from the former Eastern Bloc catfishing American men. The women I’ve known who have married American men genuinely want a better life, it might not be a love match but they appreciate the opportunities they have in the US due to their partner.

I think the interesting component here is generally speaking, the intent is for the women to immigrate to the US. I recall reading he got to Georgia, called the woman and waited for an hour to pick him up. Which makes me wonder if she even knew he was coming to visit (and permanently)! We know they spent time at a hotel together but we don’t know if he shacked up with her, got his own apartment etc.

I think this case has wound down in news coverage but I’m dead curious on the follow up here. How is RB going to rebuild his life after this? He has an unusual name, and lives in rural Wisconsin; who would ever want to hire or date him ever again? I suppose he at least has his carpentry skills, but I’m guessing he no longer has access to any of his tools (which are $$$).

I wish his poor wife and kids the best. They live in such a small town - I’m sure the community is generally supportive but no one wants to be known as the people the husband/dad ditched to be with his foreign mistress.

My experience with the immigrants' community: very often it is a naturalized immigrant living in the US, another Western country or Israel (originally from the postsoviet space) who becomes the new husband, but he may be "married planning to divorce" or in the process of divorce and posting on Tinder, or divorcing as the result of the new relationship. Divorces are as common there as here, so someone’s marriage or failing marriage is not a barrier. People usually meet online.

For a "suitor" to come for a visit, meet, then return home and finish the divorce to marry again is not uncommon.

What is very unexpected, for anyone, is to fake death and move to a new country forever.

My own reasons for thinking he was scammed have more to do with my personal opinion of whether he is alluring enough to be getting real life offers vs anything about the woman.

IMO, this case does not warrant jail time, and further waste of resources.

Apparently, LE has other ideas. There was a lot of time spent on the search and time spent encouraging him to return. If the idea was it was a waste of resources, this would not have been done, and he would not have been charged. I'm supporting law enforcement.

I find it more important for RB to make restitution than waste additional taxpayer resources accommodating him in jail.

I also doubt he'd be sentenced to time for a single misdemeanor obstruction charge. A good indicator is his signature bond release. IMO, this was a moral crime against his wife and children that he rightfully will never recover from. What an indecent person...

A criminal complaint states Borgwardt is charged with one count of misdemeanor obstructing an officer. Court filings state he intended to mislead investigators by "intentionally" leaving items at Green Lake to make it seem as though he had drowned.

Court records show Borgwardt was issued a $500 signature bond at his initial court appearance on Wednesday. A judge also ordered him to surrender his passport to the clerk's office.
