Found Alive WI - Ryan Borgwardt, 45, Green Lake, 11 Aug 2024 *evidence that he faked his death and is alive in Eastern Europe*

  • #161
As an adult isn't he allowed to go away whenever he wants and under whatever circumstances he wants? He didn't ask for anyone to search for him.
what else did he think would happen when one fakes their death by drowning? he didnt "ask" for the search but he sure as heck knew it would happen! also, he may be allowed in the eyes of the law, but that doesn't mean its morally or ethically right. i feel like the law might ding him, if found, on all the child support he could have paid, perhaps life insurance fraud as well.

He left his kayak there (overturned and with a life vest on top as if simulating a drowning) and other items after texting his wife saying he was just going to shore for a short while; this is a serious attempt to deceive people and not merely someone going away whenever he wants. Resources and manpower have been utilised to look for him for days! a search he prompted with this little show of leaving a trail of clues implying a tragic outcome. Apart from being unethical, taxpayers' money and time have been wasted in a country where there are thousands of people missing and not by their own accord, so these resources were needed to look for other people. What he has done is callous imho.

Welcome to Websleuths, @jillolantern !

As to your question ; In most cases, I believe yes would be the answer.

I think the onus is on him for the cost of the search , and the emotional toll of deception was pretty damaging to his family.
The possible criminal component, in my opinion, would mainly be paying restitution for the resources expended looking for him..
Wondering if the insurance policy was to benefit them, though ?
Or did he intend to try to seize it somehow ?

Strange case.
Still sad for that family.
Only My Opinion.

No- absolutely not- in terms of “whatever circumstances he wants” - in my opinion-

Driving off and not coming home, fine

flying off into the sunset, viable

disappearing to get some space- sure-

all legal adult options- not the best choice in my opinion but understandable in some circumstances

messaging wife and staging a drowning while using a fraudulent passport (it was neither lost nor stolen) while erasing online footprint, traveling to/trough Canada to Europe etc - no not ok -

And he also put people in potential danger during those searches!

I am wondering a few things:
1. How did he get from Green Lake to the Canada border.
2. When did Canada "run" his passport
3. Where did Canada run his passport
4. If it was at an airport, where was he going.
5. If it was on a highway, what was he driving, and who was with him?

I'm new to websleuths, so please give me pointers on how to search these things if they have already been answered.
Welcome to Websleuths, VivianV. Here is the answer to your second question. :)

Wisconsin officials believe kayaker missing since summer faked his death and is in Europe

Podoll said the investigation shifted focus across the Atlantic when it was discovered that Borgwardt’s passport was “run” on Aug. 13, the day after he disappeared.

The life vest being found on top of the kayak would have raised my eye brow.

Has anyone seen a report that mentions Ryan and the woman in Uzbekistan were linked romantically? All I've read is that they "communicated" via email at some point. About what, we don't know. We also don't know that he went to Uzbekistan do we? Every report says Europe or Eastern Europe. MOO

“We found out that he moved funds to a foreign bank, changing his email and (had communicated) with a woman in Uzbekistan,” Podoll said. “He took out a $375,000 life insurance policy in January and purchased airline cards.”

Borgwardt is now likely in Eastern Europe, Vande Kolk told CNN. It is unclear who the woman in Uzbekistan is, Podoll added.

Seriously, anyone who has ever accidentally (or on purpose) flipped a kayak or canoe knows that stuff goes flying/floating out and away or perhaps gets caught underneath- I can’t think of a scenario where something ends up on top of the craft - moo

So life insurance policy and airline cards in Jan

New passport in May

Disappeared in August

Sounds very calculated and planned— be curious what else was going on end of 2023- Aug disappearance

lol-yep and if you didn’t have it on you probably couldn’t get it on in 200ft of water.

Nope- having trouble working that scenario out- but also begs the question- why did LE assume drowned and not at least peek into other options- I mean a life vest on top of any water craft is odd unless it was somehow attached- moo

I don’t remember seeing anything specifically stating they are linked romantically (even if being scammed) but it is how it comes off if reading “between the lines” IMO

Yeah, I get that. I'm just trying to keep my mind open to other possibilities. We don't know a thing about this woman except for where she lives/lived. Is she married? Does she work? If so, what does she do? Etc. MOO

While it is really awesome to see that local Law enforcement actually followed through to an investigation -instead of just writing it off as a drowning or walked away. I am curious about how the FBI and Homeland Security got involved in a missing adult person case when it doesn’t appear a particular crime was actually committed

I wonder if his passport left the country but Ryan did not, that the scam was to obtain a passport as well as money, that he was convinced to fake his own death at someone else’s behest. It really does sound like a possible romance scam as others have said. Someone else must have been involved to get that passport over the border.

The agency involvement is curious - moo
