On Tuesday, September 16, 2008, at about 5:12 p.m., police responded to a shooting at 4400 Jane Street.

The victim was discovered outside an apartment building, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite life-saving efforts by emergency personnel, the victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police Update Toronto's 50th Murder: 18-Year-Old Killed On A Basketball Court - CityNews Toronto

"It happened around 5pm just south of 4400 Jane Street. William Junior Appiah, known to his friends as Junior or Yoshie, was playing with friends on a court surrounded by town homes filled with families.

Appiah was born in the Jane Finch area, but had recently moved to Brampton. He still attended a local high school that isn’t being named.

As Det Sgt Gary Grinton outlined Wednesday, three men then approached him.


“There was a conversation with the three people and Mr. Appiah which resulted in one person producing a firearm and shooting him,” he said.


“They left in what is believed to be a silver Japanese small vehicle.”

Tributes quickly appeared on Facebook, a social networking site.

Trevon, a friend of the victim, couldn’t believe it had happened.

“I see him every day, every day he used to be here. We just played ball and stuff. I don’t know. I just, seen him like 2 minutes before he,” the young man can’t bring himself to say the words.

“Before it happened,” he continues.

“I don’t know how that can happen.”

Police are hoping someone does.

“At this point in time we’ve interviewed an awful lot of people from that neighbourhood,” he acknowledged, but more work still needs to be done.

“I have no idea. We don’t know what caused this,” Grinton allowed.

The court and nearby playground were filled with dozens of children at the time of the murder. Miraculously, none of them were hurt.


“It’s all senseless acts,” Kwame alleges. He lives in the neighborhood".

"The suspects are described as three young black males, all in their late teens. At least two of them were wearing hooded sweatshirts".
