CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WCHS/WVAH) — Kanawha County deputies said they believe the body of Crystal Dawn Kiser, a woman from Jackson County who has been missing nearly a month, has been located and her husband has been taken into custody in the case.
They believe the body of the 37-year-old Kiser was found in Jackson County, the sheriff’s office said Friday during a news conference.
Sheriff Mike Rutherford said Kiser’s husband has confessed to the crime and has been arrested. He was arraigned Friday afternoon.
The sheriff’s office got a report on Aug. 11 that Kiser was missing. During the investigation, detectives reviewed several hundred hours of video and spent several hundred hours scouring the roads and area in Jackson County where she was thought to have been.
Rutherford said on Thursday, Crystal’s husband, James Kiser, 40, of Kenna, was interviewed at the sheriff’s office and admitted to killing her during an argument while at her grandmother’s house on Lessie Lane near Sissonville. He told detectives he took her body to a remote location in Kentuck in Jackson County and buried her body in a shallow grave.
Shortly after the interview, James Kiser went with detectives and pointed out the grave where he said he buried her. Detectives are currently at the scene collecting evidence.
“The body has not positively been identified as her, however, we have full confidence that it is her due to his statements that were given to the detectives,” Rutherford said.
The sheriff said both families involved have cooperated during the investigation.
A criminal complaint said that James Kiser told Kanawha County deputies during an interview Thursday that he traveled to Lessie Lane on the morning of Aug. 10.
James Kiser said he “lost it” during a verbal and physical altercation between him and his wife that lasted about 20 minutes. He said he and his wife wrestled during the altercation. At first, he said his wife hit her head on something inside the home. Later in the interview, James Kiser said his wife hit her head on a rock outside the residence and stopped breathing, the complaint said.
After realizing he had killed her, Kiser said he became afraid and then loaded her body into a vehicle and took it to the remote location, the complaint said.
The following agencies were involved in the investigation: Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, Kanawha Bureau of Investigations, St. Albans Police Department, South Charleston Police Department, Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, West Virginia K-9 Search and Rescue, West Virginia Division of Forestry and Charleston Area Medical Center Security Department.
“We are sad that it turned out this way but we’re glad that we’re able to bring a closure to her family and let them know where she is and that justice hopefully will be served,” Rutherford said.
