A string of suspicious deaths: What we know about veterans who died at the Clarksburg VA

Sept. 20, 2019

"In the months leading up to July 2018, about 10 veterans checked into the VA hospital in Clarksburg, West Virginia, and never checked out. Their deaths are the subject of a federal criminal investigation.

Veterans Affairs Inspector General Michael Missal said his office is working with the FBI and the Department of Justice in the probe.

A "person of interest" was identified, but no one has been charged with a crime. Hospital officials said it's not a current employee, and Glenn Snider, director of the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center, said the person "was removed from their position."

Five of the veterans have been publicly identified. Here's what we know about them...."

More than 10 unexplained deaths at West Virginia VA hospital, says lawyer for families

October 03, 2019

"CHARLESTON, W.Va. — A lawyer representing families of veterans who died suspiciously at the VA hospital in Clarksburg says there are more than 10 victims.

“I know that they’re looking into more than 10,” said attorney Tony O’Dell, who represents several families of veterans who died at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center....

No one has been arrested, but authorities with the VA have said no one currently working there is a suspect....

O’Dell represents McDermott and Hallman, plus two others who have not yet been named.

“I’ve got two other cases where the OIG has actually shown up at the homes. One of the cases, there’s actually an autopsy being performed right now,” he said.

“And we have another case where the autopsy has been performed but the body had decomposed to the point where it was not able to be determined from the autopsy if it was a homicide. But the medical records do have the hallmark of exactly what we’re looking for in here, which was medically-unexplained hypoglycemic event.”..."

I understand it is a complex investigation, but I wonder why they don't wish to ID the POI. There are some other current cases, smaller in scope, where this seems to be the new LE posture, zipped.

Oh no! Type 1 diabetic forever here. I have often wondered why we don't hear of more insulin murders. It's....effective. And I suppose we don't hear much, because it hasn't been easy to trace. Surely they must have an idea who has access to insulin and those patients!

Just read a story about these shameful murders from the Washington Post :
https://www.washingtonpost.com/poli...636e90-dee0-11e9-be96-6adb81821e90_story.html

According to this article, the woman who is now a POI in these deaths claimed to be a CNA when she applied to, and was hired by, this hospital in 2014. Somehow, and in spite of the staggering amount of personal data the government itself records for its citizens and visitors, NO ONE AT THE VA THOUGHT TO VERIFY THIS until after she became a POI in 2017?!
I’m not an especially pro-military person, but I am just appalled by our government’s apparent disregard of, and lack of respect for, those who recently or long ago made great sacrifices to fight its battles.

As always, MOO!

Person of Interest in VA Deaths Not a Nurse

October 21, 2019

"PARKERSBURG — The person of interest in the suspicious deaths at the Louis A. Johnson VA Medical Center in Clarksburg was not a certified nursing assistant that the hospital thought it hired, according to a claim filed by the family of one of the deceased veterans....

No one has been charged. Five veterans have so far been publicly identified.

A notice of claim against the government filed by the daughter of Felix K. McDermott, 82, who was retired from the Army, in August was the first revelation that an investigation was underway and nine or 10 veterans died under similar circumstances. The claim also disclosed there was a person of interest...."

Families of veterans who died suspicious deaths at VA hospital continue their wait

June 05, 2020

"A third lawsuit has been filed in connection with a series of suspicious deaths at the Louis A. Johnson Veterans Hospital in Clarksburg.

Charleston Attorney Tony O’Dell filed the suit on behalf of family members of retired Navy Seaman John W. Hallman....

Authorities have a “person of interest” in their investigation, a nursing assistant who worked on the floor who has been fired by the hospital. No charges have been filed against the unidentified individual and U.S. Attorney Bill Powell said again just this week that the investigation is ongoing...."
