I think being charged for rescue should only occur when people are grossly negligent or breaking the law. I don’t want forest access to be restricted to the wealthy.

I agree and if I am not mistaken I think much of rescues are paid for through government funding.

There was an issue in the White Mountains of N.H. a few years ago when a dangerous search in the winter was questioned, the missing were where they were not supposed to be etc. Many of rescuers are volunteers and as in most SAR's conditions are dangerous.
I can not remember exactly what happened but many felt that the people that they were searching for should have to pay and whether that came to be I just can't remember what the outcome was.

In 40 years we have yet to call them. We've managed on our own (or with other sledder's help) in some sticky situations but none were caused by negligence.

You can get lost in an area you grew up in if a storm comes up fast. When you can't see anything it doesn't matter how well you know the area. It's happened to us and until we literally bumped into a landmark we recognized we had no idea where we were.

I was hauled off by my Uncle with a shattered shoulder, all I did was tip over it was just a case of a badly placed fallen tree. My 13 year old daughter hauled my Dad out with a broken femur after he crashed. It was just a drop off he wasn't aware of, negligence would have been if she had followed him off of it. Other sledders helped them load the snowmobiles and lock up the trailer once they got up where there were people.

Much of where we ride has no cell service to begin with. So we are aware that we are essentially on our own. We don't have the advantages that other states do of warming huts and regular park service patrols.

If we ever DID call it would be because we had NO other option. I really cannot think of a scenario where we would unless it was a spinal injury where we were afraid to move them ourselves?

Update 12/26, 3:40pm: The parties have reached the snow-vehicles. Once they get everything loaded up, they will be headed toward Greenrock for a reunion with family and friends.

Update 12/26, 2:45pm: Extra snowshoes have been brought to the 4 individuals, they will hike with SAR team about 1mile to awaiting snowmachines and snowcat and then be brought back to parking area. The weather isn't cooperating to allow air support.

Update 12/26, 1pm: Searchers have reached the subjects!!

Update 12/26, 10:45am: Ground crew is very near, no confirmation of hands on yet, but they have assessed the situation. They will either be air lifted or will have to walk out to a better location to extract by ground. Air support is waiting on clearance to go....weather and authorization.

Update 12/26, 7:30am: Rescue Team is headed out. Please be patient for info, there is very little communication to the area where the riders were spotted yesterday. Carbon County Search and Rescue took command of the search this morning.

Support in any form is welcome for both of the Search and Rescue groups involved in the efforts over the past several days. We posted earlier a way to donate to Albany County SAR, here is a donation option for Carbon County.

It sounds like they are literally going to just bring them back to their truck at the parking lot. That's just amazing!

I am sooooo glad this will have a happy ending. I can’t wait to hear their story and what went wrong. You can see one of their sleds in the background.

Me too, the only thing I can think of is machine issues but not all four of them?

So happy to see the picture of them, they all look good.

This isn't where they were camped I don't think. I believe that is SW'S sled in the background. I don't see any blue, it looks like this:

I'm thinking this is after they hiked out, they stopped to rest before riding out while everything was loaded up. I REALLY don't think they were stuck in this location.

Missing Snowmobilers To Be Reunited With Family And Friends

Good news for the four South Dakota snowmobilers who went missing over the weekend in Wyoming.

It looks like they will be reunited with family and friends soon! According to a Facebook post from the Snowy Range Snowmobile Club's, rescuers reached the group and currently have them on snowcats to bring them to safety.

You may be right. I may have misinterpreted that post.

Not your fault at all, SW wasn't clear in the original post. I do think it makes sense that it would be made after they were out of the area they were stuck in too though.

It's just if that was one of their sleds, they weren't stuck and I don't believe that at all. I think all 4 sleds were out of service or someone would have gone to find help. Maybe not immediately but after a couple of days, definitely.
