Question: is it possible that police can track to some degree, the parents truck on traffic cameras in Florida and other states with their license plate readers? Do all states have that?

Wowie! I step away to give my eyes a break and things start happening!

A Federal Indictment?

Hot Diggity Dog!

Good news! And this is just a start. Days ago I was saying he would eventually be charged if he used her credit cards after she died. Next will be theft of the van and theft of her possessions. And probably a communications charge for using her phone if he sent that bogus text. The prosecutor will stack and stack charges. And depending how the murder went down, these can be used to enhance the murder charges.

If he told them when he came back with the hitchhikers on the 29th he found Gabby already dead?

ETA: Not hitchhikers when he hitchhiked :face palm:
If he had reported it, they would have been able to get a clear time of death and DNA evidence.

I think because of their suspicions, they were afraid to ask him any questions. jmo
You very well could he right, which is just as awful in my opinion.

I might believe it if someone witnessed his abilities (such as someone who camped or hiked with him) but I don't believe anything that he has said. Sounds like a loser making up stories to try to impress someone.

Unless they were sharing the peanut butter crackers with him on the AT. . . at this point i'd be thinking he lied to his acquaintance about his 3 month hike. My drivers license has me at 120 pounds. . . I like to think i'm thinner than i actually am.

Is there some overwhelming reason to blame the Moab police for this? Are posters blaming them for Gabbys death?? FGS! Is there some deep, dark reason that some people don’t want to hold BL accountable?? Are these people saying Gabby was mentally impaired?? She was incapable of making a decision to stay with BL??? Pretty insensitive & insulting to Gabby IMO

An investigation has been launched into how they handled that stop. So it's not just posters questioning things.

Is it possible he crossed into Mexico? That would be his only chance

I think this is where I am at with him. Why did he return home? I suppose it's possible he made some crazy story to his parents about how it was an accident that caused her death but no one would believe him so he panicked, drove home, told parents and they decided to help him find a place to hide? I mean they had to know he can't stay on the run and that their silence would just make it look worse.

He got scared and went home to mama and dada. Didn’t know what to do. And they did put a legal hold on the matter.

the parents called an attorney they knew. Did exactly what he said to do. No idea what story BL gave them. Really, best thing for parents is to keep mum. If they knew he killed her, then they are up for charges. But no way for Feds to find out if they all don’t say. Best thing legally is for all of them to sa nothing and let the Prosecutor put together a case and let defense attorney tear it down with other possibilities.

i don’t think it’s even a crime if he found her dead and left. No law saying he had to report it. But if he knew she was dead, he was stealing her money. Ignorance of law not an excuse. Not allowed to use deceased’s bank accounts. Even with permission. They have to be set up a certain way to do so legally.

But the fact of the matter, crux of the matter is why would ANYONE leave a loved one dead, hurt, alone in the wilderness? Just leave. That’s what gets me.

If only the officers who responded in Utah had recognized the red flags and treated Gabby as the victim rather than as aggressor, I doubt we'd be here. jmo

Don't know what would change. GP would have said (as she did) that he did to abuse her. I still think the shelter that provided BL the room should have followed up as a requirement for the room.

Ok, someone way back brought up a theory about BLs parents dropping him at a residential psych facility. I'm actually coming around to that being a plausible scenario because HIPPA and confidentiality, mentions of his "episodes," and the defense aspect. (NOT saying this is my working theory, but I now see it as a plausible scenario, depending on the answer to this question).
Can anyone actually confirm what responsibility a residential treatment centre would have in this situation? I know the basics of psych ethics and confidentiality as well as HIPPA, but at what point would they need to report his presence in care, if at all? I need to go do my psych homework instead of googling this forever. TIA!

At the point BL was declared a missing persons, notification from LE would have gone to most area in patient centers. They are then obligated to report if he is there. And if he entered any once he was in national news they would also be obligated to report. HIPAA laws do not apply to law enforcement in missing persons cases and absolutely not now that he’s a fugitive.

So getting gas in Benton IL on Aug 31…

thats 1400 miles from Jackson Hole

with 1000 miles still to go to North Port

Impressive that he pulled up to his house the next morning

Did he really get home Sept 1? Timeline seems off.

Honestly, at this point I think his parents are complicit. Maybe they weren't in the beginning because he fed them a line of BS or maybe he came clean and they've been trying to do damage control the whole time. Either way, I very strongly believe they are now complicit. And I would not be surprised if their 3 day camping trip dropped him off somewhere far away.

Agreed 100% Tried to give them the benefit of the doubt but can't see it now. If it can be proven they're in for a rude awakening of charges IMO.

Gabby Petito's Inner Circle Shares Insight Into Alleged "Toxic" Relationship With Brian Laundrie

However, "things weren't 100% wonderful" between the couple when Laundrie's friend, Ben Matula, knew them as teens in Long Island, New York. "There was always something below the surface," he told People for an article on Sept. 22.

"One minute, they'd be all over each other, the next minute, he'd be like, 'We're fighting,'" he alleged. "They always had some drama."

….

Petito's friend Alyssa Chen, 23, also told Peopletheir relationship was rocky.

"They had times they were toxic and times where everything seemed a lot more healthy," she said. "They had very low lows and very high highs. But they really seemed to love each other."

As Chen stated, "When things were good, you'd be like, 'Why can't I have a relationship like that?' When they were bad, you'd be like 'Oh my God, just break up and spare yourself from the drama and everyone else from having to hear about it.'"

Well he didn't escape from an institution and he wasn't in lawful custody so I'm guessing this wouldn't apply unfortunately.

I'm sorry, I thought someone asked if he checked himself or his parents checked him into a hospital while he's "missing" or "wanted", which he is, if the hospital would tell law enforcement. I'm still pretty sure the answer is yes because HIPAA allows a hospital on its own initiative to disclose protected health information to law enforcement as necessary for law enforcement to *identify* or *apprehend* an individual who has escaped from a correctional institution or from lawful custody.

I would think if you were seeking help for your grandpa you include what type of help was needed. I am not sure if the weird text meant grandpa was leaving voicemails and was the source of missed calls to Gabby's phone. Or, did the text mean that Gabbie was supposedly leaving voicemails and calling? Any thoughts?
I was confused about this when I first heard about it, too. Once I saw the actual text, it made sense right away. I think her Grandpa had been calling and texting asking Gabby a question, and BL had been ignoring the calls, and probably calls from Mom as well. I think he wanted it to seem like they had bad service and that's why no one was answering their calls. So he texted the mom asking her to contact Grandpa, killing two birds with one stone. When I get calls when I'm in an area with spotty service, I get a missed call message and a voicemail without my phone ever ringing.

This is from what BL TOLD Gabby's friend. And if he said the "Appalachians" it was assuredly a lie. No one calls hiking the AT "in the Appalachians". It's not a mountain range, it's a trail. I really doubt BL has anywhere near the skills required to survive a winter on the AT, especially is he is moving north east which he most likely would be if he went there from FL.

And the weather will be getting colder, the leaves will soon be off the trees and freezing rain & snow will fall. I've lived along the AT all my life. There will soon be much fewer people but info on him has been well circulated through the outdoor community. There will also soon be lots of hunters out in the woods the next few months as the various seasonal hunts begin & end.

Example of AT NY area deer hunting seasons: Deer and Bear Hunting Seasons - NYS Dept. of Environmental Conservation

View attachment 314345

There will always be people in the woods!

I also seriously question how much actual experience BL has in cold weather camping or, honestly, camping at all without a vehicle.

He's from Long Island! There are no mountains there. All the "camping" I've seen him do is his car camping in major tourist areas. I've never even seen them do a difficult or unpopular trail or even hikes in bad weather conditions.

IMO, BT is more of a "poser" and the principled ideals he mouths are purely aspirational. Now he may see himself that way. But that won't help him on Mt Washington in the winter. I don't think he has nearly the skills to survive on his own and certainly not without purchasing or being supplied with food, socks, warm clothes etc.
Brian BS'd the Moab Police and everyone he met after this murder. Do you really expect him NOT to play Grizzly Adams among his van touring peers?

We might not ever find out, but I am hoping those calls and/or texts from her grandfather drove him bug---t, FWIW

I honestly don't think he was aiming to hoodwink them with his charm. The dynamic in the body cam situation didn't change until the bearded cop asserted himself as the alpha. The first cop on the scene wasn't buying Brian's story and was skeptically questioning things he said. Brian was picking up on that. You could tell from his body language and how he interacted with that cop that he knew he needed to be careful with him, that he wasn't buying his crap. It wasn't until the bearded second cop somehow asserted himself as the alpha in the situation that the dynamic changed and for some reason the first cop on the scene changed his tact with Brian. And then he and Brian - and the other cop - started paling it up with each other. It was a very interesting dynamic to watch unfold.

Agree....It was IMO a tactic he used (maybe unconsciously who knows), but it aligned him with LE. I recollect him saying something to LE very early, along the lines of 'i don't know if you're in a relationship' at some point , before he engaged more with the 'you know how women get' sort of thing, to which LE replied ''i've been married for 5 years". To me this was the start of a bond that worked to his advantage. And as we know the conversation about GB continued on the way to the hotel, and she was not present. He could have demonstrated a bit more that he was upset that she would be alone but after all --she just needed to take a hot shower. The whole thing was hard to watch.. I wonder if GB even heard a lick of what he was saying while she cried in the cruiser. ugh...

Theft and murder... all the same crime, really. Interesting that it seems that he murdered her, THEN stole from her. He took the time to snaffle her debit card, after he killed her... probably took a trophy, as well, an earring, swatch of her hair. He looks as off as a 3 dollar bill, to me.

....unless, he took it first, she did her block about it, so he killed her. Wouldn't surprise me if he was in the habit of taking her card to (a) gaslight her and/or (b) instigate an episode of helpless fury and collapse in her.
In her published interview, her friend stated that BL had previously exercised control over her by taking her drivers license or requiring her to remove an app on her phone that kept her and her friend aware if each other's locations. So, yep, consistent if accurate

Yes, for the safety of patients and staff.
