Is Brian Laundrie Alive? One Seasoned Pro Says Yes — and Where He Thinks FBI Should Look Next

At least one seasoned investigator, a retired federal marshal with three decades of experience searching for -- and finding -- people who were on the run, says he doesn't think Laundrie was ever in the Carlton Reserve in the first place.

In an interview for News 4's The Debrief podcast, Craig Caine, who supervised members of the New York/New Jersey Regional Fugitive Task Force before his retirement from the U.S. Marshals Service, said he believes Laundrie was never in that nature preserve at all.

"I think it was all a ploy. He had plenty of time to calculate those moves," said Caine, who has no involvement in the Petito/Laundrie case but who offered an expert opinion based on 30-plus years working such mysteries in the United States and abroad.

Caine says there is one "critical moment that changed my mind" as far as where he thought the investigation would lead. In his view, it all comes back to that silver Ford Mustang Brian Laundrie's parents told police their son drove to the Carlton Reserve on Sept. 14. He left behind his phone, which the FBI has since confiscated.

Laundrie's parents went to the preserve after their son didn't come home. They found the Mustang. They drove it home. Three days later, they called police to tell them that Brian Laundrie was missing. That, for Caine, was the critical juncture.

"You're gonna leave your son out in the preserve with no form of communication and no way to get home? Does that make sense to anybody?" Caine asked. "I don't even think he was ever in that preserve."

The FBI and local law enforcement briefly seized that Ford Mustang as part of their investigation and have since returned it to the Laundrie family. It's unclear what, if anything, of forensic note they found inside of it to assist in their investigation.

Caine says he isn't surprised they haven't found Laundrie yet, either. But he does think, eventually, he will be located.

"This isn't reality TV. This is a real-life situation, which leads me to believe this was well-orchestrated, well-planned and he had a lot of time and resources," Caine opined. "This guy will be found, maybe not sooner but he will be found later."

100%.

S’what I been sayin’ all along my peeps!

Gabby didn't call her grandfather Stan. So either Brian sent that text, or it could have been Gabby trying to warn her mother that she was in danger. In either elementary or middle school, I established a code word with my daughter should she ever be abducted.
Why they choose to use her grandpa’s name as a code word?

There's a simple enough, plausible explanation for the Yellowstone message that nobody seems to take into account. It's not unreasonable that people who travel and frequently talk about travel, camping, etc,
would have frequently typed the names of other popular locations. Well, our phones learn our patterns. And so it's not outside the realm of reality for someone just sending a quick text to type out a "Y" and hit send without realizing that predictive text said Yellowstone, not Yosemite. The two words look similar enough if you're not paying attention. Remember it's only speculated that Gabby was dead before that message was sent, but none of us actually know that.

MOO.

The text on August 30th said “no service in Yosemite,” I believe. As you said, we don’t know for certain the date Gabby died, but we do know for certain she was found dead in Wyoming. She never made it to Yosemite in California.

She may have traveled to Yellowstone along the way in Wyoming but she wasn’t there on August 30th.

Therefore, logically, Gabby did not send that text. Her mother knew it immediately.

People are allowed to laugh even in the worst of times. Especially in the worst of times.

This has been suggested over and over again. Do y'all have people this loyal in your life? I feel like I might have friends toss me some cash, but not cover it up and smuggle me out of town. Ha!
You know the saying, "Friends help you move. Real friends help you move bodies." LOL! That's why I posted that I thought BL's parents may have given him some cash and some food, and wished him well. There is nobody on this planet who I'd risk going to jail for, but that's me. JMHO.

I had not thought about that. But then why the concern that he have it at the hotel? Isn't it needed to even make a simple phone call? MOO

he could connect to wi-fi to FaceTime, use an app to call over Wi-Fi, etc. My theory is they had one phone that had service which was Gabby’s and just used hers as a hotspot when together. This would save them one phone bill.

So if they found nothing, why did so many of them show up there yesterday? And why did they go back today? What prompted their return after days of scaled back search efforts?
The only logical explanation I can think of is that the trail cams are picking up movement and activity in various places. It could be him. It could be a deer. Who knows? I think as long as the trail cams keep picking up movement they will continue to go out there in more or lessor numbers to check it out. jmo

Or using it as a code word to try to warn her mother that she was in danger.

I don't understand why a person surrounded by police at a vehicle stop like she was would want to or need to use code words.

- DBM -

She could have just told the police she was afraid of BL and ask to be taken away with them. Instead she said, "I can't be alone".

That is also puzzling, since not long after that, she was alone for several days in a hotel room. (allegedly)

Or they just met up with some folks along the way, which is incredibly normal when travelling cross country and ended up in a bad situation. It isn't nearly as dramatic as your story, but it IS possible. MOO!
then why didn't brian tell someone who murdered her and what happened instead of stealing all of Gabby's stuff and going into hiding?

To add to that, not one of his actions point to his innocence...

Unlucky Bri, ey?......

In addition to his actions not indicating his innocence, please correct me if I’m wrong, but his lawyer has never once indicated that BL wasn’t involved with Gabby’s death.

Why would LE conduct a million dollar manhunt for someone who committed a 1000.00 crime? They would not. This is a manhunt for a killer.
@SuzieQ Bam!!!
Without the assistance of social media, her body may actually never have been found, IMO. I haven't heard national media coverage on the other missing persons, I believe that media coverage is what caused people to take notice of events they witnessed.
The media coverage went like warp speed.
I for one am so glad!!

I question that too.

….

Brian Laundrie was under surveillance before he disappeared, police say - KVIA

As the search continues for Laundrie in a sprawling Florida nature reserve, Taylor also confirmed investigators did not find a campsite during those efforts. That confirmation came after a source close to the Laundrie family told CNN’s Chris Cuomo they were informed by investigators that police had made a discovery in Florida’s Carlton Reserve.

The source on Thursday insisted that the Laundrie family had been told a campsite had been found.

Is it possible that they thought that there might be a campsite out there or something they may have seen from the air but when they got on the ground that’s not what it turned out to be? Sure, I think that’s a possibility,” Taylor said. “Bottom line, is that investigators are telling me that no campsite was found out there.

Why it didn't work is either because Gabby's mother didn't understand that's what was going on, or it was Brian trying to send her on a wild goose chase, IMO.

Where has it been reported that they called off the wedding because they were too young? I have only seen that it was postponed due to covid.

Gabby Petito timeline: Everything we know about her disappearance
That info came from Gabby's mother.

"The distraught mother also clarified that Gabby and Brian had been engaged, but decided to call it off and go back to just dating because they felt they were too young for marriage.

'I think they kind of put that on hold just because they felt it was a little fast. They were excited at first, but then they were like, let's just wait, we're very young. So they were really just boyfriend and girlfriend,' she said."

He's lucky. Or dead. Which may actually be the same thing for him.
Great post. IMO it would be the same thing which is why I truly hope this guy is found alive. For him to escape answering for this would be a travesty. MOO

I don't understand why a person surrounded by police at a vehicle stop like she was would want to or need to use code words to signal her mother. The cops were right there. Her mother was in New York and in no position to help. The female officer told her it would be ok to leave this toxic relationship. Is this the situation where the potential code signal comes into play?

If so, I'm really puzzled how a code word helps. She could have just told the police she was afraid of BL and ask to be taken away with them. Instead she said, "I can't be alone".

That is also puzzling, since not long after that, she was alone for several days in a hotel room.

JMO
Because victims of domestic violence often don't report to police, even if they are alone, and she could have been trying to reach out to her mother instead, letting her know that it's gotten really serious.

Agreed. I worry he won't really pay.

He needs to sit in a cell for a very long time, instead of going out on his own terms.

Me neither! At first I thought I must be unobservant or need new glasses. But I’ve watched & watched & taken rapid-fire screenshots of the footage- even the slow-mo one & I CANNOT SEE THAT VAN DOOR IN ANYTHING BUT THE CLOSED POSITION. Maybe there’s an edited messed-with version out there to look this way? I see no evidence of a van door closing in the official RW&B footage. Jmo, moo etc.
I watched it.
I see it.
It closed.
